animation Thoughts on Powerpuff Girls Reboot

I really despise this reboot. The original show was golden until seasons 5 and 6 (they were alright, but they really weren't the same show) but this reboot is just half-Clarence, trendy garbage. Tell the story! Don't break your neck trying to make it trendy and for this generation! Who cares?!

Okay I'm going to say this again:

While the new show suffers flaws I think everyone is panning it so much because they are looking at the original with nostalgia goggles. Forgetting the original was loaded with references as well. And people will argue "well those were actually funny" but we weren't kids then. Today's kids are not us and when people go "well today's kids don't know quality", I think they should go look at their parents because that's exactly who they've become.

We're all older now so we're suffering from nostalgia, and while the new show it's great, I think people are just trying to find everything they can not to like about it because they are upset it's not "the same". I approach the show with an open mind and ignore the original exists. It's not great, but I'd say it's at least 6.5-7/10 worthy, not the 3.8/10 that IMDb has given it. That being said reboots generally get hate on being reboots alone because people can't let go of the original.

Sure we may not find No Me Gusta to be funny, but kids probably do and truthfully we can say that the memes in the new show are dated, but have we forgotten the original show did a 5 minute Star Wars parody when that film was over 25 years old at the time? People will say "well Star Wars is timeless", implying that no one knows what the No Me Gusta meme is.

People are just being too critical because they weren't given exactly what they thought they were getting. I also can't help but feel the fuss that Tara Strong kicked up made a lot of people's taste soured before it even began.

For me, its just the art style. I mean come on, just take a look at this.

Edit: Picture on the left is a promotional poster. The picture on the right was drawn by Piemations with the style of the older Power Puff Girls.

... There isn't really a huge difference to be honest...

While I don't hate it like a lot of other people do, I can't say that I am overly found of it either.

I gave it a chance and watched the first 14 episodes, and I can't say that I really want to watch any more of it.

At first I was happy to see more Powerpuff Girls, but now looking back I don't really see what made me watch it besides that.

It really isn't as interesting or funny as the original.

At least I really like the opening theme.

The fact that they are relying on shitty internet memes and twerking is enough for me to see that this show doesn't even have the spirit of the original cartoon. I have not watched any episode in full, so maybe my opinion is invalid, but from what I have seen, it looks horrific.

I actually think it's pretty good. I do agree the original is better, but I've enjoyed the reboot as well. The new designs are actually pretty good, and the new voices, while not exactly what I was hoping for, aren't that bad. I actually like the new intro better than the old one. I also don't think the animation is as bad as a lot of people think it is. I also enjoy the stories.

I'm not surprised it's so hated. Reboots tend to get hate if it's not exactly like the original. They're not trying to be exactly like the original here, but of course there are people that still expect it to be.

I do admit I would've preferred if they brought back the original VAs. I still don't like how they were just tossed aside and I sympathize with them. Must've been awkward for Tara when she recorded the TTG-PPG crossover since she's still Raven.

I found the original PPG funny, I don't think I laughed once with the reboot. It seems like there's little effort put into the new show :/ I mean, it's an okay kids show but that's it.

I don't like the new show at all. I gave it a chance and watched and watched a few episodes, including the infamous Painbow. From there, I had to stop and watch some of the original content.

Yes, I know I have my nostalgia goggles on, I feel that the reboot tries too hard to be like Clarence or Regular Show - something the Powerpuff Girls never were and only serves to rob the reboot of the charm the original had.

Add to that, the girls physically are a lot weaker in the reboot than in the original - almost to the point I feel that they'd better off as ordinary girls.

If I were a young kid, I wouldn't care, but as an adult, I find that I just can't bring myself to care for the reboot.

It's a mixed bag.  I saw one episode about them becoming grandmas.  Since I hadn't seen the original though, I couldn't really say if it was a good homage or not to the original.  But it was OK nonetheless.

It's kinda funny, I actually sort of like the new version. It doesn't come close to the original's quality by far though there are moments that I absolutely despise, like when they use meme jokes which are gonna be old in a decade or so. The original Powerpuff Girls was timeless, you can't place a decade on it, and that's what makes it still enjoyable today. Here, it just reeks of 2010's jokes, that even NOW aren't that funny in the first place. I do have to give the show some merit though, I mean I still watch new episodes whenever I can for a reason. While most of the jokes are poor there are lines and comedy that are pretty good and make me laugh sometimes. The storylines are OK, even if some of them are just ripped from the old show, and I do kind of enjoy the art style. Music is a little lacking though, I mean the only tune I like is the one from the opening, that's it. It's animated pretty well too, though there are enough errors to make cinemare sins explode. So I'd say that It's slightly above average, not the best show I've ever seen, but not the worst either. My last word is that this show sadly went from the action show that the original was to the weird, wacky comedy style it is now, sort of like what Teens Titans GO! did. I don't have a problem with comedy, but changing the entire genre of a franchise Isn't right, it doesn't usually work.

EDIT: Oh, almost forgot to talk about the voice work. It honestly Isn't that bad, I like the new voice actors for the girls, though I'd prefer the old ones, and all the returning and new side characters have OK voices themselves. I can't stand the new show's villains though, they're so... Ugh!

That weird transgendered unicorn episode was awkward to watch too. I don't know wtf they were trying to say with that.

I don't get why so many people get a "transgender" vibe from that episode. It has nothing to do with that...

That's what they were going for though. Nick Jennings told the L.A. Times:

“Basically when it starts out, he’s a pony, but he wants to be a unicorn. He has to go through a transformation to become a unicorn and so it’s a whole [episode that asks], ‘What are you on the inside? What are you on the outside? How do you identify yourself? How do people see you?’ There’s a lot of subtext in that.”

“I don’t think you can be too young to start talking about those issues and thinking about those things and just presenting an attitude, and a voice that is going to resonate with people."

http://www.lgbtqnation.com/2016/04/powerpuff-girls-episode-features-transgender-horse-whos-really-a-unicorn/

If they just showed the episode and didn't mention anything about subtexts then it would just be an episode about a horse who wants to be a unicorn. He should have shut up about it as bringing it up made it look terrible.

For my knowledge, it's alright.  Not as clever or as risky as the original, but not as insulting towards its fans as say, Teen Titans Go!

When it comes to humor the show is hit and miss. When it hits (and it does), it really hits, but when it misses, it really misses (like the unicorn episode and the outdated pop culture references).

Basically the final nail in the coffin for Cartoon Network after they intentionally murdered the childhood show I loved and cherished back in the late 90's. No more will I ever watch Cartoon Network. Its basically left in shambles, even if I'm told otherwise.

While I find it entertaining, it isn't quite as fun as the original series. I don't see why it's being trashed so badly. It isn't like the difference between "Teen Titans" and "Teen Titans Go". I watched a few episodes of Go. The only episode I liked was the one where the the writers actually admitted the reboot was universally hated by the original fans. Control Freak told the titans that he already rebooted them in one episode, and says it was a big mistake. The titans saw themselves as they originally looked, and were astounded at how awesome they USED to be. Then they were upset that the original series ended with a cliffhanger, and became furious with Control Freak for ruining them.

To me, there isn't a whole lot of difference between original and new Powerpuff Girls. My big complaint is that they didn't get the original voice actors.

Even though I don't hate the reboot, it is getting trashed so badly because of the questionable things that are going behind the scenes such as removing Ms Bellum for "not sending the type of message the creators wanted" and than saying she is too smart to be the mayor (so she was probably removed for her body, which is also apparent when you see that Mrs Keen's breasts were removed in the show), the insane amount of animation errors, the producer saying the episode Horn Sweet Horn is about sending a message about transgender or something, but the writer flat out said that they didn't write it about that, and the lack of action and edge that came from the original show.

And how much of a merchandise machine the show comes across as.

And making the bizarre choice to remove the original voice actresses of the girls, but keeping the voice actors for the mayor, the professor, Mojo Jojo, Him, the narrator (who is barely used)and maybe some others.

Outside of that, I think the show is just rather meh, but has a lot of flaws going against it.

Well the original power puff girls did have an episode about how clones of them were never going to be as good to some effect, probably sort of an episode slightly about counterfeit merchandise but I can see a parallel. And yes the show can have such an ulterior motive or is the buy our toys meme not enough evidence such stuff exists?

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS TOPIC

SO i love the Power Puff Girls they have been my favorite show since it first came out in 1998 i was only a year old but i was watching it nonetheless, i love that they were always nice and polite and well rounded girls, but at the same time the bad guys always got their ass- i mean butts handed to them.

i loved season 3 episode 12 "The Headsuckers Moxy/Equal Fights" when they perfectly example feminism as EQUALITY, if one is above the other something isn't right. Then they beat up Femme Fatale and sent her to jail just like they would any other man, like Susan B. Anthony demanded to be treated when she broke the law by voting, they told her this story, and told me too.

The original Power Puff Girls taught me so much as a kid. I like that they're bring them back... but it isn't really them. They could have had the same voice actors and they chose not to, making the transition a bit more difficult. And it's less super heroes beating up the villains more... smart phones and memes....

Maybe it'll never be the same...

P.S. anyone remember the 1 episode of the other reboot they tried? the girls looked all geometric and creepy? anyone else cry after that episode? just me? ok then....

just incase you didn't know this was them:

When I heard about the reboot, I decided to watch some old episodes 'cause I thought it could be interesting to watch but I first wanted to be familiar with the original show. During my childhood I didn't see many episodes of the Powerpuff Girls.

I really enjoyed the original show, most episodes were funny and the characters were so interesting and cute and... I discovered I basically loved the Powerpuff Girls. :)

So at this point I've watched I think like 18 episodes, and last time I watched it was perhaps 1 month ago or something like that. But I never enjoyed it like the old Powerpuff Girls. It's missing what I loved most ; Mojo Jojo, Miss Bellum, and most importantly... the girls saving the city.

I loved all the villains in the original show, and most of them are gone. But the girls don't even save Townsville anymore. It's their very first purpose : being the heros of the city. Now it's just three little girls who happen to fly and go through incredibly cliched scenarios.

I don't hate the reboot, but it could be so much better. There are some things I like. The new voice actors for the powerpuff girls are ok in my book, even if I prefer the original ones, some voice actors are still present like the Professor's (even if you can notice pretty clearly he's been out of business for a while), Mojo Jojo's, the Mayor's... The new art-style isn't too bad even if sometimes the animation could be better. But right now, the reboot's biggest problem is simply the episode's plots which are sometimes simply cringe-worthy.

tl;dr: The reboot is filled with cringy memes, cliched plots which never let us see the girls do what they do best : fight crime. They are completely unable to create episodes with a relatively entertaining scenario in which battling monsters or villains is involved, instead we're stuck with stupid storylines, like Bubbles breaking her arm (l o l) and not willing to give up her cast, a unicorn who doesn't know he's a unicorn (l o l²)... It's just plain absurd, boring and the supposedly funny scenes make me chuckle at best. The positive points I highlighted earlier are far from sufficient for me to recommend the reboot to anyone. If you want to watch an interesting Cartoon Network show, just watch Steven Universe if you haven't already. Here's hoping the show gets better with time.

I can agree the show isn't what the original was and is full of memes and teen related issues, but to be honest I don't mind it, it's somewhat better than most shows I've seen on TV nowadays.

I did not really watch the original but when I watched the reboot just to see if it was any better than the crap Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon are putting out recently... Cringe city. Hate is a strong word but I seriously dislike it.

I will not compare new to old, cause it's usually just isn't fair to do that. Each are good in their own rights. However, the new PPG is trash, in my opinion. Not because it isn't like the original, cause again, I'm not comparing. It'd be like people who try to compare a movie to the book it was based on. Of course it'll be different. The movie would be too long, if they went word for word in the book, and depending on which book to movie, it'd be absolutely boring watching it, compared to reading it. But, anyway, this is about PPG. The new one is trash, cause it really does just use overused internet memes, including ones that should never exist in a kid's cartoon, because of their meaning and origin. It's trying to appeal to a "hip" crowd. There's a few other things I can pick from it, but yeah. I've given it a few chances and I couldn't like it one bit.
