gaming The absolute WORST gaming consoles!

Recommended Posts

There have been some pretty bad gaming devices made in the many years that gaming has been around. Some systems find their place, while others are quickly forgotten and left to exist in the black hole that is the everlasting bargain bin.

So to celebrate the failure of some of these atrocities on entertainment, let's discuss what we all think are the worst gaming consoles of all time.

For me, a top contender is the dreaded Philips CD-i. This thing is an absolute beast of an awful gaming machine. While it might have been cool from a perspective of being an alternative to a PC at the time, its gaming functions were some of the worst ever. Almost none of the games were great (Pac Panic might be the only one that was pretty cool) and none of the games were any better than what the almighty 16 bit consoles were doing years earlier. The CD-i makes the 3DO look incredibly competent and at $700, this thing is just horrid for gaming.

$700 for this thing!

Valve Video Game Console imho.

upd: what? nopony heard about Steam(valve) Box? Gabe Newell himself was creator of this piece of junk) it was right after Half-Life ep2, when everyone was waiting for any news for ep3 of hl3. this thing comes up. but then it was canceled i guess, and then they concentrate on Steam game service as we know it. money, money. no one care about creative and games as a state of art, not some "make a new sequel every year, no matter what it'll be look like". well i guess, it's topic only for old and (now)useless consoles.

At least the CD-I was ultimately the foundation for YouTube Poop.

That is true. Without the CD-i, we would not have such classic lines like:

"Great! I can't wait to bomb some dodongos!"

"Mah boi, this piece is what all warriors strive for!"

"I hope she made lottsa spaghetti!"

And plus, Bowser never would have ventured into the hotel business.

And we'd never have this "commercial," either:

THE CD-I GAVE US YOUTUBE POOP

IT'S WORTH IT FOR THAT ALONE

My vote goes to the OUYA. Something is wrong with your console when you try to make emulation a selling point. And even then your better off with your PC

One of the biggest kickstarter disasters within recent memory(and I say that with full knowledge of Mighty No. 9)

Funnily enough, way back in the day - people went to Apple over PC for gaming (with the Apple II), then both companies changed marketing etc and now obviously PC is waaaay ahead in those regards.

But, Apple did once try to make a gaming console: The Pippin

They sold an amazing 42,000 units and discontinued it after only 2 years - talk about a success XD

One can't forget Nintendo's most infamous gaming console in the history of their company... the Virtual Boy. It was an ambitious project far ahead of its time, yet the seizures it caused just after an hour of play, the awkward setup, and the overall lack of support are just a few examples of its eventual failure. It got discontinued after being on the market for roughly ten months, and only nineteen games were released for it--it might have been twenty-two.

Sega x32 cause of it's lack of use when it came out. The whole product was simply just not necessary. Though it brought some good games, it's just worst of the best in my opinion. A gaming console is a gaming console, video games are life.

I am going to be unoriginal and say the Virtual Boy.

The health risks, the ugly black and red screens, and the price make it to be pretty bad.

At least the CDI gave us some of the most bizarre and entertaining videos online.

Does anyone remember the Nokia N-Gage? The so called "handheld mobile-gaming" device? Hmm.. how can we beat the Game Boy Advance? I KNOW! Let's add mobile functionality, lets have it so that you have to control it via a numerical pad so there's like 17 buttons for each game. Let's have it so that you have to jam the system awkwardly into your ear just so you can hear the other end if you ever do decide to make a call. Let's have it so that to change cartridges, you have to first disassemble the entire rear of the system, battery included! Finally, let's design it to look like a Taco...

"Mmmm.....an N-Gage!"
"You spent $300 on a taco?"
"Yeah, well...I wanted to try it...."
*takes a bite*
"How is it"
"....tastes like mediocre gameplay, awkwardly built cell phone and disaster all rolled into one tacoey bite!"

Yeah, this thing was a disaster waiting to happen. Though fairly technologically impressive for a handheld system at the time, there were just so many shortcomings that held it back, not least to say a mediocre selection of games and a for-the-time hefty price tag of $300. It was shown off at the 2005 E3 expo which you can find on YouTube. Still, as far as console blunders go to come out of a major corporation; this one ranks pretty high.

No, the RCA studio 2 was the worst console ever made.

Whatever happened to the RCA Studio 1? :P

I remember that. It's fun because they tried to make so many things with N-Gage that they messed everything up, bad gaming console, bad phone.  :derp:

The RCA recording studio was sometimes referred to as the RCA Studio so they just put a 2 in front of it to avoid issues.

Indeed. Just goes to show that a technological superiority need not necessarily make a better system. :twi:

Fair enough. Not that I think anyone would go out of their way to find it anyway. ^_^

Was it really as recent as 2005? It feels way older than that! I had a friend who had one, I don't remember ever seeing him actually play a game on it though XD

My mistake, it was 2003. 2005 was the year it was discontinued. XD

Aha, that sounds closer to what I remember, another console with a 2 year lifespan XD

And of course, we can't ignore the Wii U.

Wii U isn't even Nintendo's worst home console

UNPOPULAR OPINION TIME

N64 was

EDIT: Both are still no where near the worst consoles ever, still solid systems with decent libraries.

Lets save the hate for consoles with little redeeming qualities like the Pippin, CD-i or OUYA

I won't deny that particular console had its flaws--mainly due to Nintendo's decision of not going with what was popular--yet I enjoyed it despite the shortcomings. Nintendo's worst system is the Virtual Boy as I mentioned in my first post of this thread. That one was an absolute disaster and was also a catalyst of sorts towards an unfortunate accident.

UNPOPULAR OPINION INCOMING: The Wii. The first one.

The library was horrendous (literally only ONE or MAYBE TWO decent games in the entire library...)

At least Smash 4 was honestly far better than smash 3 and (ANOTHER UNPOPULAR OPINION) even better than Melee.

But this is only the worst out of the POPULAR consoles. Don't even get me STARTED on CD-I. Mario is Missing... CDI LOZ... wow what jokes.

N64 was the worst

Yeah it's definitely overrated alright. I mean look at the controllers. The design is AWFUL.

Wii is still worse though, at least the N64's library was actually fairly good, and the design wasn't a safety hazard.

I myself love the Wii U.

Sadly, it just doesn't have ideal marketing.
