technology Microsoft joins the Linux Foundation

I know I'm a little late on this, but:

What do you think, considering former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer called Linux "a cancer" back in 2001, and now the company seems to be super friendly to the FOSS standard?

I think it's a step in the right direction, to be honest. When Gabe Newell said the future of gaming is Linux, I think is what started it, alongside Ballmer retiring from Microsoft and Satya Nadella coming in to replace him - he seems pretty sane, which is pretty opposite to Ballmer, tbh.

Microsoft seems to be opening themselves to a ton of new ideas and ventures, which can only mean good things for the gaming and technology industry. Never known much about Linux myself but any expansion is good. :)

I'm hoping they put out DirectX for Linux because of this - WINE, a Windows software layer for Linux, can only go so far. (for example, Overwatch currently is not compatible with Linux, even with WINE, due to it running on the newest DirectX).

i never really had linux before....how is it any diffrent ?

Linux (or GNU/Linux, as someone on another forum corrected me about), is a free operating system, released in 1991. It is open source and community developed, meaning the source code is available for anyone to look at and make changes to if they want to. It powers a LOT of things nowadays, such as servers (perhaps even the servers hosting MLPForums), embedded devices (such as ATMs, cellphones, tablets, DVRs, etc), and even your own computer if you decide to.

It's got it's own codebase and software bases, meaning it is technically (for now) totally incompatible with Windows, though free alternatives for Linux do exist (such as LibreOffice, which is a free replacement for Microsoft Office). Microsoft used to really dislike Linux, felt threatened as it was gaining a huge base years ago, but they seem now to be getting friendlier towards it.

hmmm i see but does it give hackers a better chance through linux though ?

Nah. Linux has a lot of security measures. Plus, before you can submit a code change to be officially published, the software author or appropriate person has to look at your code change.

He's still (somewhat) at MS I thought? And yeah, I think it's partly because Nadella is trying to push the cloud based stuff such as Office 365.
