Tilgoreth 1,915 January 2, 2017 Share January 2, 2017 It all depends when you'd ask me. A couple years ago I would have said some very harsh things about them. Now? Well I'm one. As a kid I was near really bothers by girly content. Don't get me wrong I would have dreaded G3 mlp. But something like Kim Possible didn't bother me. I thought she was awesome And I even enjoyed those Tinker Bell movies. Even though I knew they where for girls. That didn't really bother me. As I got older I also became more resistant to girly thing's I suppose the reverse of what you might expect. I refused anything purple or pink. Those where "girly". Though eventually I stopped being a clod(I love you Peridot ) and didn't care as much. I don't know I just realized that you should like whatever you want. And as long as it isn't illegal you shouldn't have to worry about what other people think. Granted for whatever reason there's a lot of hatred from some conservatives. But there entitled to there own opinions. I didn't know the name of the fanbase back then, but was aware that there was a group of adult dudes liking ponies. I didn't think much of it, considering I've liked a girly thing or two before, like Super Princess Peach Well when the fandom initially started I probably would have had very negative opinions about them. I was such a clod(Peridot ) back then. I initially only found out about and watched it because I found out Tara Strong was voicing a character in it. I was surprised they still even made the show; which I had seen as a kid in the early 90's and didn't like. I thought it would just be fun to see how dumb the show was and what her part was just for kicks. After watching more episodes I thought it was very well done for what it was and more entertaining than I expected also. It's kind of refreshing how the show has a positive message, which if you think about it most other popular shows seem to be either violent (which I'm not against, just bored of), or stupid and/or just lazily written. I also like how the people working on the show really do care and are surprisingly interactive with the fan base. A lot of other bronies seem to be some of the most level headed people I've dealt with online also. Well most other shows don't have a positive message because most shows aren't as sappy or sentimental as mlp. A lot of other shows mock sappiness and sentimentality. Which I understand. Granted I feel like the sappiness in mlp is warranted. It fits in with the tone the show sets. And most of it revolves around friendship and family. Things I don't think are bad to get sentimental about. You also mentioned violence? The only really violent kids cartoon (I'm not counting anime) that I can think of as being really violent was The Legend Of Korra. Murder suicide in season one. Then they murder the Earth queen in season three. And three of the red lotus members die pretty violently. But besides Korra I can't think of a genuinely violent kids cartoon. I never really paid much attention to the fandom as I didn't even know it existed. Once I got exposed to MLP through watching snippets of the first Equestria Girls movie, I began looking around online to see if there were others like me. I stumbled onto Equestria Daily a month afterwards and lurked there for an entire year before I first started commenting. While I was lurking, I got to see what the brony fandom was all about. I liked what I saw though there were obvious flaws that were brewing below the surface.I only joined mlp forums to talk to other fans of the show. I really haven't seen much fan created content. Not that I'm opposed. But I just don't care to go looking for it. 1 Signature made by Kyoshi.
Kyoshi Frost Wolf 41,933 January 2, 2017 Share January 2, 2017 I remember clearly having an immense curiosity about this fandom, but it was not in a negative light. I always wondered if this show was really THAT good to have such a large fandom like this. After months of seeing clips of the show and being fascinated by it, I then learned about this immense fandom and about that time is when I asked myself 'Should I fully watch this show?'. So really, this fandom was my main gateway to getting passed those dumb mind barriers to watch the show. The fandom may not be perfect as I learned soon thereafter, but I will always be grateful to it.
Kiri 7,291 January 2, 2017 Share January 2, 2017 Honestly, I was completely unaware of the brony phenomenon until after I started watching the show. I found brony related sites while searching for information on Season 3 (this was during the hiatus after Season 2). I was excited to see that FiM had fans of all ages, genders, and backgrounds!

Tilgoreth 1,915 January 2, 2017 Share January 2, 2017 I focused on the fan content first before eventually starting to talk to other fans.I avoided that. I only found the show like three months ago. And I wanted to watch all six seasons before watching fan content. Especially when some things had already been spoiled for me. Though admittedly for the most part fan intent doesn't interest me. If I find some I'll look at it. But I won't go out of my way. Though like I said I'm not opposed. 1 Signature made by Kyoshi.

Before looking into fanart, fanfiction, and other such content, I watched Equestria Girls in its entirety before watching the first three seasons--at the time--so as to play catch-up. After that came my looking at what fans were doing as a means of seeing what I could do to contribute in my own small way. Once I started planning out my purpose, I decided to interact with other fans to give myself a better foothold so as to not go around on my own.
Amaterasupony 19 January 2, 2017 Share January 2, 2017 In 2012, a friend recommended the show to me. I am really open minded to these things, so I told him "Okay I'll do it". However, until very recently, I never dared to watch it. Because I had the same question in my mind as you do now (somewhat): What would other people think of bronies? What if I actually begin to like it? Turned out that I was not as open minded when I was faced with that situation, which in turn lead me to conclude that these people indeed were very strange. But I just thought 'whatever' and went on with my life. At a certain point in time, I found all of these awesome fan videos and art on YouTube and DeviantArt. I finally built the courage to watch the show. I became hooked pretty quickly, and for some weeks I kept wondering about all these questions. Eventually, I stopped caring and even set my favorite wallpaper on the laptop I bring to college. Most people, when they see it, mostly just laugh about it. Color Song 65 January 2, 2017 Share January 2, 2017 (edited) Before u became a browny what did u think of about the fandom Obviously this doesnt apply to those who became brownies the first day mlp aired What were youre opinions on bronies did you think it was weird? Did u even know what a brony was? Did u instantly want to become a brony too? I at first kind of ignored it i did watch mlp parodies on youtube here and there .mov being the first way back in 2013 i think. I ddnt realy hate bronies. Edit: brownie=brony I thought it was a fascinating phenomena and decided to investigate further. Unfortunately, the first thing I was exposed to was a video of "how to turn your fleshlight into a pony" and that sort of made me shy away from the whole thing for a while. Then when season 2 was released, my boyfriend had me watch the show with him and I was hooked. Becoming a brony myself showed me that what I'd seen before wasn't the definition of "brony." hahahaha. BlueStreak98 828 January 3, 2017 Share January 3, 2017 I've known bronies pretty much since the start of the show. Some of them were genuinely nice people, some were total jerks, and all of them were a little quirky in their own way. Having been around furries for years, I was used to that to a degree, but a lot of the bronies seemed to take the weirdness to a whole new level. It used to bother me more than it does now, though. I guess I realized that one of the things that draws us to fandoms and makes us Bronies or Furries or Trekkies is that we're all a little bit weird. We might have anxiety, or depression, or autism, or a bad situation at home. We might have more than one of those things, or something else completely that makes it hard for us to get through the day. But in Equestria, that doesn't matter. The show/movie/etc. is our outlet, our place where we can be ourselves, fit in, and get away from the daily crap that is our jobs, or lives, or living situations, or parents, or whatever it is that brings us down. And I think that's beautiful. And I'll always respect fandoms for helping give people that escape. "I still believe that peace and plenty and happiness can be worked out some way. Granted I might try and look at more fan content while I wait for season seven. I wanted to contribute in the realm of fanfiction since it was something I did as often as I could back between 1999 and roughly 2008, but I neglected the passion due to losing interest--and not finishing most stories. I still have issues about finishing stories but I've actually completed two big ones.
zanderlex 23 January 5, 2017 Share January 5, 2017 I myself had no opinion, but the idea I had was that if there were others who liked it, I might as well give it a chance in the future. I figured it people like it, then it can't really be that bad. It just took a while for me to actually start.
NotoriousSMALL 1,984 January 5, 2017 Share January 5, 2017 At first, I had no clue it was a thing. I just saw tons of people with MLP gif avatars and I thought they were hilarious (a few I remember are RD doing sonic rainboom, fluttershy going crazy in TBNE, and random objects falling on twilight from FPK) I had also had the infamous "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic provides a realistic representation of life in Ponyville" being recommended to me on youtube, and I thought the thumbnail was funny. Although after seeing all this, I didn't know bronies were a thing and I just assumed it was another internet thing.
The Gear Spinner555 126 January 6, 2017 Share January 6, 2017 Honestly, I didn't really give it much thought- I think it was a CNN story my mom was watching that first let me know "hey, dudes like MLP" and I said "huh, that's pretty weird, but whatever" Little did my 14-year old self know. Guest January 7, 2017 Share January 7, 2017 To be honest, I thought the whole G4 of MLP was an entirely different thing than the rest of MLP. One of my first reactions to how the characters looked wasn't exactly positive as I thought they looked weird. But when I found out about bronies - at that point I still thought that the term 'brony' referred to the ponies themselves for whatever reason - I didn't have any idea what to think. I just put the case to sleep until I properly found the series myself.

GeekySonic 1,150 February 18, 2017 Share February 18, 2017 I thought it was weird and dumb, but for whatever reason I kept up with fanmade content that I thought was pretty cool. As I have in a few other threads, I watched the show AFTER I first considered myself a Brony, which was the day I finished Fallout Equestria. Vlazamal 338 February 18, 2017 Share February 18, 2017 I found out about Bronies through ROBLOX. Beforehand I just watched it without knowing the fandom existed (complicated story. i quit watching it and then discovered the fandom) and the only "Brony" I knew was me. In ROBLOX, the National Brony Army was one of the strongest clans, which is hillarious considering that ROBLOX clans are often ultra-serious. I believe I found them by raiding them first and loosing. Frostgage 7,977 February 18, 2017 Share February 18, 2017 Truthfully I didn't really understand them and thought the craze was kind of strange. But the simple fact is that FiM is just a form of honest entertainment like any other, there's nothing strange at all about fans outside the "target audience." ManaMinori 4,146 February 18, 2017 Share February 18, 2017 Not speaking for the fandom as a whole, but I think too many are set in their ways, and inflexible and unimaginative. Like with Canon acceptance. They crave world building, yet deny the secondary sources that give them that. They admire background characters and breathe life into them, but refuse to do so for ponies other than the secondary six. Moore Tides 9 February 18, 2017 Share February 18, 2017 I was a fan from the first Lauren Faust episode I saw in college. So I had not thought about it at all before reading the term "brony" two months later. Although I do have to admit that first episode I could not stop thinking about"The Shmooze" from the one pony video my family owned growing up
FlootahBabby 265 February 18, 2017 Share February 18, 2017 Before I watched the show I thought they were weird but never had any negative opinion towards them. Now that I've been a fan for a long time (half a decade in 2 months) I can say that, there is no singular title you can give them. They just like a show. Some are good and some are bad. Night Rainbow 11 February 18, 2017 Share February 18, 2017 I would always make jokes about them, but it was all just for fun. I'm an adult male who still loves The Lion King and reads Warrior cats, so I never hate on anyone for loving something that, to the rest of the world, may not seem appropriate to their age group. Now that I'm a brony, I still poke fun about it but I use myself as the target. All of my non-brony friends know I watch the show, so I'll make fun of myself to get a laugh. They're accepting of it though so it's all for fun.

Prospekt 11,023 February 20, 2017 Share February 20, 2017 I remember the first time I heard the term "brony." I was instantly like "what the heck does this mean?" so of course I looked it up on Urban Dictionary. Not gonna lie, I was weirded out... so I approached all the bronies in YouTube comment sections and whatnot with caution. I mocked them a little bit (wasn't one of those nasty "anti-brony" trolls though), which I deeply regret doing It took 2 years for me to really get what the fuss was all about, and thank goodness I gave the show a chance.
