Why do people ignore Lost Mark's issues?

At least to me, Lost Mark had GLARING issues, both in pacing (almost as bad as Mystery Cure) and in (especially) development. Why do people ignore these isues? (personally i think it's "the CMC got their cutie marks! this episode is automatically perfect!")

I do agree with pacing. Sometimes I think some of these episodes should've been 2-parters. A quarter of the episodes we watch should've been two parters, that way they wouldn't have pacing issues! Unfortunately, they seem to only stick to the premiere and finale as the only 2-parters.

When it comes to development, Lost Mark was fine to me!

Yes, it is paced very oddly to move the plot along, but I think many of us ignore it because we love everything else so much. The CMC finally got their cutie marks and it was a very glorious moment and we got to learn more about Diamond Tiara too. Most things are flawed, but this is one of those things that I prefer to focus only on the positives.

It's not perfect by any stretch (There's little buildup to this Diamond Tiara backstory, and there are some *really* clunky visual metaphors) but I don't remember any really glaring ones, and otherwise I found the episode to be entertaining and moving and it had much more change to the status quo than usual, so those largely outshone the episode's issues. Plus, although "Magical Mystery Cure" is slightly exhausting with its song barrage, it'd probably be way less so if I weren't so bothered by what actually happens  in that episode. "Crusaders of the Lost Mark" feels significantly more earned.

Basically, this episode just wipes out the CMCs reason for existing & destroys Diamond Tiara as a villain.  So, the episode's  pacing doesn't bother me 1% as much as its existence bothers me. Can't speak for others, but that's why I ignore the pacing problems

It surprised a lot of viewers when the CMCs finally receive their cutie marks. In that alone, it was a monumental moment since the beginning from building the day when they finally acknowledge their roles in life. Crusaders of the Lost Mark was only to fulfill that ambition and everybody didn't notice the flaws it had because it wasn't the thing they wish to see.

To be fair, COTLM was the most-hated episode of my life. One, a cutie mark change anypony at all and two, the CMC are brainwashed by their Cutie Marks by telling what to do! This episode should've been banned because of Emotional Manipulation and Bullying too!

You could ask this about any episode in the show, really. None of them are flawless, and yet they're all still generally pretty entertaining.

I like that episode in particular. I think the music was great, and though I'm still not much a fan of their mark designs, I think that their newly found purpose in life sure beats anything anyone else could have imagined.

I suggest just not looking at the show so critically, and enjoying it for what it is - a happy, colourful, musical treat for the eyes and ears.

I think a lot of people actually see issue with the episode. For me, the pacing was mostly fine. Tiara's problems came out of nowhere but the great songs and how emotional it was make me forgive those things.

My main problem is the cutie marks they got. Really a let down in hindsight imo.

This isn't pretty but it's what I am tonight.

My only issues with it are Silver Spoon being tossed aside and the pacing (although it's still better than Magical Mystery Cure in my opinion). Other than that, it's still a solid episode.

There is no such thing called flawless episode, even Crusader of the Lost Mark, i can point out many problems of it just like everyone else, but this ep make me feel so happy that i dont even bother to nitpick. This ep is deserved to be overrrated XD

It's my 2nd favorite episode of the season, first being Luna's episode! Yes, this episode even surpasses Slice of Life! ;) Why? Cause I don't really care about the BG ponies that much! :P

Honestly, the only problem I've got with Crusaders of the Lost Mark is that it should've been a two-parter. Other than that, it's one of my favorite episodes and certainly one of the best episodes of Season 5.

Now you're talking! It would be like that Season 2 finale! I like it, I LOVE IT!

I actually felt the exact same way, and I barely criticize episodes (or comics).

Reading the thread, I see others acknowledge the flaws too, but prefer to focus on the positives. That's a matter of taste, I suppose. For me the negatives were too strong (and I found the excuse for Diamond Tiara's behavior very strange and shallow - Other shows have gone the "bad parents" angle, but with a lot more nuance and not with an eye at totally 100% absolving the bully. All this did was create a new character who they could transfer the "hate" for Diamond Tiara to. Like, even making Spoiled Rich responsible for the "blank flanks" nickname? What?)

Why rant/critize over something you enjoyed?

I believe this is the reason almost no one complains.

The only parts of the episode I despise are the CMC overshadowing DT in the last five minutes and the design of their Cutie Marks

22 minutes is not enough to tell a story of that scope

5-6 more minutes would've helped immeasurably

Yes, considering how much they can already stuff into 22 Minutes - (Intro + Credits)

It is definitely not enough to make it perfect, but most episode are like that. There is always something missing.

There's only so much they can fit in each episode.

While I agree a 2 parter would be the best choice, it also seems like it would be too long (too long for ponies? I must be mad).

No matter the flaws, it's still one of the best episodes, also they finally got the marks they was working so hard for, we got a wonderful song, saw DT in a new light.

10/10, would watch again several times.

I don't think any of the issues are GLARING. It has a couple of flaws like just about any other episode here and there, but nothing that truly detracted from the overall episode itself. I mean we can all sit around and nitpick every episode to death if we want to... but at that point you are no longer watching an episode and enjoying it and instead are just looking to bitch for the sake of bitching. It is a 22 minute cartoon show, not a film up for an Oscar... they are not all going to be perfect.

Yeah, they're not all perfect. In fact, I actually enjoy a lot of "disliked" episodes (like Mysterious Mare-Do Well) and don't see the problem with them. I think in this case, though, it's something that both the OP and I can tell is flawed, yet is somehow getting a lot of praise from the fanbase. If the fans hate episodes like that, why aren't they piping up in this case? This episode reminded me a lot of Magical Mystery Cure - Is the only difference there really the particular event that happened? (Controversial alicornization of Twilight vs. long-awaited CMC marks)

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Diamond Tiara being influenced by her mother's a bit of a leap from prior characterization of her, but it's not like "Magical Mystery Cure" where we're expected to believe Twilight has 'earned' something which she never strived for and which she isn't given a good reason for having alone received. With Tiara, we're merely expected to take pity on her and hope for her to see a better way. I personally have a soft spot for reforming villains in this show, and found Diamond's backstory there mostly believable, so I was able to go along with the high emotions the episode tried to evoke, where I always find myself resisting them in "Magical Mystery Cure." Plus, the CMC getting their cutie marks WAS something I wanted for a long time, and it was one of the few times this show has satisfyingly altered the status quo, which was especially satisfying after how stale I found season 5 to be.
