Actually I started watching some of the Hamtaro in japanese recently... The mother's day special (shocked to see that she died) and the first two movies...

though I don't know how good the subs were, for what ever reason, the translator used the english names

okay ponies, give me all your treasure.

I kind of enjoyed Chaos; Head but it's pretty trippy and confusing XD My all time favorite animes would be Kuroshitsuji, Durarara!! and Reborn! but it really depends on the watcher. Another brilliant anime would be Mirai Nikki

Another brilliant anime would be Mirai Nikki, it's a more serious anime but BLOODY (see wut I did thar? :3) amazing, I'd recommend it to anyone.

I'll check those out.

Any thoughts on Beelzebub?

Elfen Lied is a pretty good anime. Slides over to the mature and gory side, but still good nonetheless. I recommend you read the manga first before you watch the anime.

I have always felt that original anime movies are underappreciated outside of Japan. Other than Studio Ghibli films, hardly anyone talks about them.

Some of my favorite anime movies: (Links to Youtube trailers)

Hosoda Mamoru (surname first) Films:

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time 「時をかける少女」

(In Japanese theaters next month)

Shinkai Makoto (surname first) (short) Films: (He is my second favorite director behind Takahata Isao)

(This compilation of 3 short films is his masterpiece)

(This one is a full-length movie, but not out in the US yet. The Japanese blu-ray has English subtitles, though.)

Kon Satoshi (surname first) Films:

Tokyo Godfathers 「東京ゴッドファーザーズ 」

Lesser Known Ghibli Films:

(Miyazaki Hayao) (Also Porco Rosso and The Cat Returns)

(Miyazaki Hayao)

(Takahata Isao)

Only Yesterday 「おもひでぽろぽろ」 (Takahata Isao) (This is my favorite of Takahata's works, but it cannot be found in the US. I got an Arabic version with English and Arabic subtitles during deployment, there is also a UK and Australia version with English subs)

(Mochizuki Tomimi) (I bought this in Dubai, too, but you can also get the UK version with English subs)

Pom Poko 「ぽんぽこ」 (Takahata Isao)

Whisper of the Heart 「耳をすませば」 (Kondo Yoshifumi) (This is another one of my favorite films. It is a shame that Kondo passed away after directing this...)

I'm going to stop here before I list every Ghibli film...

Other Random Movies:

(Katabuchi Sunao) (No English version yet, but it is a beautiful and very entertaining movie)

(Oshii Mamoru) (People either love this or hate this one, it takes a second watch to really get it)

(Hara Keiichi) (I loved this movie, but I don't know where you can watch this in English)

Colorful 「カラフル」 (Hara Keiichi) (Same as above)

I would recommend any of these movies to anyone wanting something really good to watch.

I'm just no good at writing signatures. Coming up with words is like... really hard.

However, you should read The Espelancer Chronicles: a blog detailing my preparations leading up to and my experiences studying at The Yamasa Institute in Okazaki, Japan (in the Aichi prefecture outside of Nagoya) for a 1-month SILAC course from July 16 - August 16, 2012.

I had the first DVD for several years, and I only just watched it yesterday. That led me to a mad search online until I finally found and downloaded both the English dub and the Japanese audio with English subtitles (which I like better). "Sherlock Hound" is so cute! The creators actually read the original stories, too. All sorts of details crop up in a more comic, light hearted manner. If anyone wants links to download the English or Japanese episodes, PM me.

By the way, somebody seems to have renumbered the episodes for Youtube. This is not episode on. it's episode three. Since they're all self contained, it doesn't really matter. The episode titled "The Four Signatures" is really number one. It shows Watson meeting Holmes aka Hound for the first time on a ferry boat. By the way, this is the English language version. The dub is rather good, but I like the Japanese better.

Back with an edit:

Here's a Youtube playlist link that presents Sherlock Hound in the proper broadcast order!

That is so true. Things like Spirited Away are really popular, but there are some really good underrated movies out there.

We totally agree. We have seen most of those, and will see the others soon. Maybe this is because anime fans are moving away from their roots and embracing long series like naruto and death note. We also think that anime in general is moving away from heavy themes and darker plotlines to attract a younger audience.

To be fair, I like both of these types of animes. I freaking love Naruto and Bleach, but I like anime that has more darker themes (Death Note, Highschool of the Dead, Gantz)

It's more personal opinion than anything so it's totally understandable. It's just from a storyteller's point of view long stories are usually hard to create without major change throughout. Series like inuyasha would be wonderful if you had more than ten minutes of new content per episode. Bleach and naruto have excellent first seasons, but for me after too much change to the character, I lose interest. And don't even get me started on pokemon... More to the point, as a avid fan of older anime I would like to see more of the older styles and storylines return, as well as the themes that made anime famous. I loved manga ent. and animeigo growing up because of the more adult directed classics they put out. From as far back as Dagger of Kamui to as recent as Ghost in the Shell, the genre of psychological thriller has been my all time favorite. As of recently the genre has been on the decline, with hits like Monster and When they Cry far and few between. Idk, I'm old with my old ways though.
