Fanbases and tragic fan characters

I find that "edgelord" characters get boring after a while.  A character that isn't given space to breathe and grow through out the story tend to become flat, boring characters.  The Edgelord characters often rely on some small stereotype or some silly cliché and that alone.

I'm not sure if this is a good example of that but I'll give it a go anyways.  Garak from Star Trek: Deep Space 9 could be an example of turning an "Edgelord" into a 3d character.  In the beginning of the show, he's portrayed as this mysterious outsider, exiled from his home planet for some mysterious reason.  Mystery upon mystery, everyone thinks he's a spy(though he honestly was in the beginning but anyways).  His past does come up from time to time but it's questionable as to whether or not they are lies.  He's originally written as some mysterious character but over time that changes and he becomes more 3d, especially thanks to the actor that plays him in the series who lovingly added more to him(he even wrote a book about Garak's past).  So yeah, he gave off this "edgy" aura when the show first began but he was given time and space to grow into something more than that.  That's why he isn't a boring character, unlike some Edgy McEdgerson whose sole purpose is to be edgy and not grow as a character.

Because a lot of them are created with the sole purpose of being a one dimensional character that exists only to be edgy.

The cliches have been done a thousand times, and when all one does is copy paste that and add nothing new to really make it stand out as something different, it is just tired and recyclable.

"Oh look, another tough character with a dark unknowable past whose only option is to be dark and mysterious and blah blah blah".

Dark and mysterious is fine and all, but if that is all the character has in their biography.... that just translates into dull and unoriginal.
