food Sugar free Gummy Bears

I do feel the correct method of testing is to leave a packet or bowlful unprotected on your desk at work/school and see what happens :)

I never seen the point to sugar free products, personally. They always replace the sugar with something very questionable. In these gummy bears, it is something that wreaks havoc on your digestive system. I am certain quite a few of those Amazon reviews are attention whores trying to be super funny and special, but from what I have read the stuff they use in them does cause problems, especially when a lot are eaten.

I'm just trying to see who is stupid enough to eat them

People at my school crowd me and demand candy when I have it, should I use the Satan Bears to declare justice?

Chili gummy bears would be good for tricking people. They look pretty much the same as the normal ones but let's just say there's a slight difference. :yay: They're not really that strong, but I can imagine they would still be quite a shock to someone who didn't know what they were.

And as for sugar free gummy bears, no, I haven't tried them. I know sugar free rice chocolate is awful (I accidentally bought it instead of the normal variety once).

I could probably handle the taste of them, seeing as I've gotten myself accustomed to sugar free drinks. However, my sugar free drinks also don't have sweeteners of any kind in them, because I wanted to move away from any of that.

In reality, my digestive system is really messed up as it is, so I most certainly don't want to try them regardless of whether or not people are exaggerating what happens. Given how messed up my digestive system is, it probably wouldn't be quite as exaggerated for me.

So what is in these gummy bears instead of sugar? Must be something sugar alcoholic?

Yes. Last bag I ordered had Maltitol as the sweetener - which is fine, and tastes a LOT like sugar, but is known for having a laxative effect if eaten in large quantities - so a handful of gummy bears is fine, but if you order, say, a 1KG bag of the things.....

Maltitol is quite tasty and not that bad. I would guess I would love sugar-free Gummy Bears then. :squee:

Well, I enjoyed them, but was careful not to over-indulge.

Sugar free mostly means they use artificial sweeteners and in most cases just can be worse than eating just regular gummy bears.

Quoted for truth.

The fact that brands can still successfully sell "sugar free" versions of all your favorite junk food and beverages shows just how much the average citizen is uneducated about sugar, and how corporations love to profit off of those fears and misunderstandings.

To set the record straight: Sugar is not necessarily bad for you, but EXTREME amounts of sugar are what you should try to avoid. If it's regular or all-natural sugar, the body knows what to do with it and how to properly digest it. Artificial ingredients are NOT good for you because the body doesn't know how to digest them properly, and often translates into weight gain among many other health-related problems. So if something says "sugar free", just know they have to make it sweet by some other method, and that's where you need to be careful. Do your research, read the ingredients list on the products, and take care of yourselves.

Most of the negativity towards artificial sweeteners is based off of a faulty study from the 70s (I think is the decade). Modern research was unable to replicate the results that led to the panic about artificial sweeteners, Aspartame in particular. The reality is that it turns out to be no worse for you than real sugar. Is it good for you? Well, no, not at all. It's just not any worse than real sugar.

Personally, I'm grateful for that stigma, whether it's true or not. Several years ago when I stopped drinking pop and switched to sparkling water, the stigma with artificial sweeteners made me quickly pass over the brands with artificial sweeteners (Sparkling Ice, the equivalent Walmart brand, etc.) and get myself used to the types with no sweeteners whatsoever. Although, of course, the fact that they aren't really any better for you than sugar should be enough of a deterrent.

Let me tell y'all, as a diabetic, sugar alternatives are a lifesaver. There is very little to no evidence that these sweeteners are any worse for you than real sugar - there are a few studies that say they probably won't help you lose weight if that's what your goal is, but most anything else out there trying to cast them in a bad light is just fear-mongering, like anti-vaxxers.
