I had a good chat with @Hugs of Sir Manys about this recently.

So, I don't like this movie much or the new trilogy as a whole, but out of the three, TLJ is my favourite. I felt it had the most interesting ideas and that it actually was trying to have its own identity.

Rey being a nobody was an interesting twist. Despite my issues with the character itself, the idea of having a Jedi protagonist with zero ties to the force was quite neat. I also really liked how it was alluding to the idea that Kylo Ren could not be redeemed like Vader was. A strong concept and far less predictable as well.  Seeing Ghost Yoda appear to give Luke advice was great as well.

Speaking of Luke, I thought he was handled terribly. The idea of him being bitter and disillusioned with the Jedi has merit and might've worked, if it wasn't executed so poorly. Him wanting to murder Ben in his sleep didn't make sense and overall, I felt they made him way too unlikable. Even after he has his whole redemption thing, he just kind of dies. I felt nothing. I remember being in the cinema and just being like "Okay."

Like TFA, Phasma is completely useless. I don't even know why they bothered putting her in the movie. I didn't think much of Holdo either, or her idea of hyperspace ramming. For the record, I'm not going to complain about Canto Bight, because I think everyone universally agrees that part was awful.

At first I rejected the zero, but that was because I simply didn't understand it. Now I do.

Pretty much this. The hate campaign towards it (and sequel trilogy overall) is far overkill, but the movie is not without flaws. Best way to sum it up is "good ideas, poor execution". I mean, let's have a look at the ideas

  • future of the galaxy in hands of someone who started off as a scavenger and a literal nobody - idea is great and shows that You don't need to have amazing start in life to do amazing things.
  • Snoke's death - a good idea as it made ep IX VERY uncertain plot wise (until it was retconned by Abrams of course, let's not go there). Kylo Ren was becoming actual villain that was no longer so easy to redeem.
  • even infamous casino scene was NOT a bad idea, it just did not sit well in the movie. First of all it was shown that galaxy is not exactly black and white, second it was interesting reality check to some to realize that same arms manufacturers that sell weapons for First Order also sell them for the Resistance.
  • Luke Skywalker becoming bitter upon emergence of the sith - a good idea, only there wasn't quite enough development for it. Also Luke trying to murder Ben Solo in his sleep was incredibly out of character.

All the perfect ingredients are there, it's just, execution was rather poor or in some cases - completely retconned in EP IX making these twists meaningless. It is a freaking shame though. The Last Jedi is far from the worst movie, but I WISH it was done better.

The more I think about this movie, the more it bugs me.

- this is the first movie that actively made me think "what the hell is this doing in a Star Wars movie?" Many things in the movie felt really out of place, from little things like the Pink hair on the new admiral(more on her later) and the scene where Luke milks that alien cow and drinks it whole, to that fucking awful casino scene and Leia Poppins
- I'm not a fan with what they did with Luke here. You're telling me that the same guy who saw good within Darth fucking Vader and did everything he could to bring him back to the light, tries to kill a kid because he "saw darkness in him?"

well at least that's one more thing he shares with his father

- While it's been hinted in the past that Leia had connections to the force, the scene with her surviving in space after the command bridge was destroyed still felt like an asspull.
- Holdo sucks, first off she looks like Tumblr forced it's way into the Star Wars universe but everything she did was fucking infuriating to watch. Constantly sending troops to their doom while fueling escape pods, giving the impression that she was gonna abandon everyone. Poe, understandably mutinies and tries to buy time to save the rest of the fleet until suddenly NOPE Leia knew what she was doing the whole time. Had Holdo actually communicated her fucking plans she might have had more people willing to fucking help her and she might not have had blood of several resistance members on her hands, and all this did was make Poe look stupid. And that scene with her staying behind just felt like a cheap attempt to garner sympathy but you know what? Fuck her, I'm glad she's dead
- The Casino scene is just painful, this is one of those scenes that just doesn't belong in the Star Wars universe. Not to mention it too boring and goes on for way too long
- Rose is one of the worst characters within recent memory, I honestly think she might be worse than Jar Jar, a lot of her attempts at humor feels really bad and forced, her "romance" with Finn is awful with no chemistry between the two. Her worst moment came at the end where she robbed Finn of a badass death, where she crashes into Finn right before he was about to destroy that cannon, and instead cost the lives of several more resistance members that could have easily been avoided
- Lots of "twists" that seem to cause more problems than anything. Snoke's death came out of nowhere and made no sense. He was supposedly responsible for Kylo Ren yet they threw him away like yesterday's garbage after so much build up. Captain Phasma is the same, constantly hyped up to be a huge badass only to go out like a chump. The only twist I liked was Rey's parents simply being bums, being nothing special. The way I see it reinforces how anyone is capable of being a Jedi/can be strong with the force. But otherwise the twists just reek of them trying to be clever and blindside you with an unexpected twist, but put zero thought into it.

I'm gonna go ahead and say I don't hate this movie, I enjoyed it, but it's a movie that frustrates me more than I'd like. The way it stands it's probably my second least favorite after AotC. I'm still interested in Episode IX though

Anyway, I don't like the movie very much and I don't disagree with the old post, but I really hate the negative discourse towards the movie and the retcons Rise of Skywalker even more

- Let's get the biggest one out of the way. Luke. I didn't like what they did with Luke with the whole Kylo Ren's turn to the darkside, before that I was fine with how he was portrayed, the previews before it made it clear he would be disillusioned with the Jedi ways. People made too big of a deal over him throwing the lightsaber at the beginning for example. But him attempting to kill Kylo Ren(who hadn't even done anything up to that point) over a vision before deciding against it was really bad and went against his character after the lengths he went to bring Anakin back to the light side(who's done infinitely worse). If it weren't for that scene I would've been perfectly fine with how he was portrayed
- Canto Bight blows, there's no defending that
- I still don't think Holdo is a very good character...at all, and they arc they had set up for her, Leia and Poe just made everyone look stupid
- Disney/Lucasfilms really hyped up Captain Phasma for nothing did they?
- They should have just bit the bullet and killed off Leia, both because we would have been spared of Leia Poppins and because Carrie Fisher had unfortunately passed away a year before the movie came out, and seemed unwise to keep Leia around after the fact, especially with how poorly RoS handled her after
- Rose wasn't a very good character but they really shouldn't have caved into the backlash and pushed her to the background in RoS, especially after all the bullying and harassment Kelly Marie Tran received for playing the character
- They really shouldn't have caved and retconned Snoke, and just let Kylo Ren be the main villain of RoS going forward, especially with how awful Palpatine's return was and how poor Kylo's turn ultimately was
- Do I even need to explain Rey's backstory retcon? Making her a nobody was perfectly acceptable and would have made for a better message than "making her a Palpatine"

In the end, they really should have just went with the set ups TLJ established instead of going hardcore into damage control and retconning everything with RoS, because ultimately the franchise as a whole suffers for it
