Don't try to redo the Mane Six or any of the characters from FIM. Mainly because if they do that, then I'll just end up constantly comparing the new characters to the old ones. "Yeah, this Twilight is kinda cool, but she's still not MY Twilight." basically. I'm way, way too emotionally attached to G4 and it's characters for G5 to ever live up to them, no matter how good they are. A whole new cast makes it easier for me to just see them as their own characters and like them for what they are, rather than see them as just "That other Rainbow Dash" or whatever. Course, I'd prefer a spin-off set in the FIM universe where the Mane Six and others still cameo, but it doesn't look like we're getting that, so, oh well. 1 Twilight is best pony. I never watched the previous gens so G4 was never a problem to me. The pony gens I believe are mostly, well, generations, so G5 mostly belongs to the children of now, cause the children of last decade had G4. After season 9 (or unless there's a special or two afterwards), that's it for me. Time to move on. It makes it way easier for a new generation to watch this show, without going back to watch 9 seasons of development. They were the hook of this series and I feel like anything that tries to follow should at least acknowledge their existence. Sort of like the new Star Wars movies. -And before anyone says anything, I thought The Last Jedi was great and will not have any argument rebuttals based on the fandom reaction to that movie alone. New setting, new characters, new characterizations, etc. However, versions of Applejack and Spike need to be present somehow, just because it amuses me that versions of those two characters were in G1, G3 and G4, and might as well be in G5.
