Wingnut 6,998 April 9, 2013 Share April 9, 2013 This is the next (and probably last) G1 cartoon I will show in this thread. Rescue From Midnight Castle is the one episode stand alone pilot from 1984. The regular series didn't debut until 1986. This special shows G1 predecessors Firefly (Rainbow Dash), Twilight (Twilight Sparkle), and Applejack (Applejack, duh). Firefly's/RD's tendency to collide with other ponies is another thing that has never changed. There are several things here that Lauren Faust drew from as she was preparing MLP:FiM. These include the threat of eternal night, a mighty magic rainbow used for clobbering bad guys, a rickety rope bridge, and Moochic's home which appears to be the inspiration for Twilight's library. Oh, and there's this bunny too... There are two things I don't like about G1, including this episode. One, for all the complaints that Twilight Sparkle is becoming a Mary Sue, Megan really fits that description. She's always the one to figure out the answer. The ponies have never won a big battle without her help. Megan must be 12 or 14 at the most. While sentient, do G1 ponies lack human level intellect and possess the mind of a small child their whole life? Two, the songs sound more childish than what we're accustomed to from MLP:FiM. It actually makes watching Rescue From Midnight Castle a strange experience. One moment you feel like you're watching Sesame Street, and the next you're seeing a brutal, bone-rattling battle with near-misses from flying spears for Pete's sake! Not to mention several threats from Tirek to behead Spike. The strange juxtaposition of cuteness and violence was not uncommon for cartoons from this period. I can barely remember it, but the pilot for the Rainbow Brite cartoon had similar intensity at key moments. It was exciting enough that, at first, I wasn't aware that Rainbow Brite was intended to be a girl's toy (though I should have). I don't know why I'm putting this comment in a spoiler, but I feel like I should in case anybody wants to watch first and then read what I have to say. This contains the infamous scene where the villain is brutally sliced to pieces by an Elements of Harmony style rainbow. Everypony's voices are much higher than in English, but they sound strangely fitting for MLP.
