Why do the comics get a bad rep?

Because egos of people like Katie Cook, Jeremy Whitely, etc., got really big and they when they started making worse stories they'd make fun of people for disliking them, with the biggest offenders being things like Reflections, The Bull Arc and the Deers. Also they made it really obvious who they liked and who they didn't like(though something I'll give the comic's staff is that, unlike the show, they were at least honest about it). Also their worst comics tend to be the ones that try too hard with world building, and messing with character backstories(though funny enough, Legends of Magic was really well liked). And then there was the DragonDicks fiasco where Ted Anderson wanted to promote a brony/man-hating feminist

As for their worst comics, aside from those 3 I mentioned, The Rainbow Dash Micro-Series comic, which wasn't even handled in house and was instead outsourced to some asshole in Australia who didn't know anything about the show and did it for the money, and it really shows. The Fluttershy Micro was also really unpopular with people believing it was a shot at critics(though I actually disagree). Other bad comic arcs include Ponyville Days, Seige of the Crystal Empire(yes, with that misspelling, that typo will live in infamy), Ponies of Dark Water, which squanders its evil Mane 6 potential, The Ponyville Election, which was an unsubtle commentary of the 2016 election, Chaos Theory which, again, snubs everyone to prop up Starlight, Cosmos, which whitewashes Discord and changes his backstory to being his ex girlfriend's bitch. Outside of the main series though the most infamous was the Equestria Girls Holiday Special which is pretty much Sunset torture porn, and out of character mane 6 stabbing her in the back, and the CMC come off as complete monsters trying to ruin Sunset's life, and the ending is completely insulting with everyone just brushing it off.

Imo, the comics at the beginning, at it's worst feels like the show in the end of its run, as pretty much any issue I have with seasons 6, 8, and 9 can be found in the comics. And honestly, I actually think the comics have come around recently, while the stories aren't as strong as they were when they were really good, I tend to enjoy them at lot more for the last few years when they at least stick the landing(Most of the time, apart from blunders like Cosmos, they've been fairly inoffensive)

Still a better and more-accurate Sombra than in S9, though.

Comics can expended the universes more than we can chew. Sometime it's for the better or worst. I preferably read comics that are not horrible in both writing and art. And also when I already familiar with the author(s) from their past good work.

I love the comics, I've read every single one, and own most of them.

I don't think most people think they're bad, but I feel most don't care to read them because they expand so much and of course people want to have their own head canons, so they choose to ignore them and automatically think they're shit because they don't side with their head canons.

Another big reason is that just like in the show there is a lack of continuity sometimes, the comics does it more so, and because the show doesn't follow the comics it always makes things in the comics non-canon. So yea that would deter people.

However, that being said, when the comics get bad they get really bad. There are some arcs that are really terrible. Just as bad as the worst episode of mlp you could think of, but a whole arc of it. So yea.

There are many stories that are incredible tho. Stories that when I look at certain things done in the show I'm just like "awwww the comics handled that better" or sometimes I'm reading the comics and I'm just like "this would've made a great episode." So yea.

Sometimes the comics do add things to the lore, as in they change things about already established lore and it makes it weird. Hypothetical, "celestia's hair moves because she drank a potion" (not something that is true just an example of something similar). I think that's something they should avoid doing because it makes the show less mystical.

I don't read the comics. Why do people say they suck? What are the worst comics?

For one thing, ,the tone and style of them is pretty different from the show - ironically more targeted at fans than litte girls. Or so I've heard - I've never read them myself. Which is probably another factor - the comics aren't available for free on the Internet, and that's the only way a lot of people get their pony. So many just ignore them, only to get annoyed when fans who have read them cite them in discussions.

The worst comics tend to be the ones that come as story arcs spread across three or four issues. Most of these ones have problems which include but not limited to pacing, inconsistencies, removing some characters in order to prop up others, retconning events, etc. From where I stand, I happen to like the comics that others have despised yet I don't let it bother me as I'm surprising easy to please. Of course, I'm not ignorant here. I can tell that problems are there but such things don't prevent me from enjoying the comics less unless it's something that really bothers me. It also doesn't help that the fans prefer what the show did in comparison.

The Cosmos arc's "retcon" also screwed Luna and Celestia over with how it messed up their achievement of beating Discord  and first use of the Elementswith it turns out ultimately to be a lie but also use of memory-wiping which means any "retcons" can happen because they could just say their memories were altered.
With how the princesses got possessed and absorbed was just humiliating. For Luna in the comic continuality, it spats on her character hard due to she was possessed by something before(Nightmare Forces), her easily being possessed like that is humiliating to her character.

I personally love the comics. I used a site to read them for free bc how the hell else was I supposed to read them without anyonen knowing I'm a brony? The site i use doesn't have Season 10 yet though but I digress.

Anyways, I really frickin love the comics. The Nightmare Rarity story arc was really good I especially adored when Sweetie Bell and Spike went up to her and then we a glimpse of non possessed Rarity and then she was shocked for a sec which made me think she was trying to fight back. Or I love that story arc where Chrysallis kidnaps the cmc and the Mane 6 go on an epic adventure of epic proportions just to get them back. Or that one story arc with the mirrors and alternate dimensions where the good guys are bad but the bad guys are good and Celestia and Sombra apparently shagged. The comics have some good stuff in them that I adore.

Well, for every good MLP comic there is, there's also a bad one. I do read and enjoy the comics to a certain extent, but I only read certain ones. As stated previously, the comics have different writers then the show writers. The show writings staff, or at least the original writers, had a much better grasp of what MLP is. You can kinda tell that the comic writing staff are just not as familiar with it. This leads to many butchered plots and characters. Plus, it's not animated. Many people, including myself, tend to prefer animation over comic strips. Overall, I think these are the prime reasons many people dislike them.

Wonder how many butchered storylines are there?

i actually really enjoyed the comics, not all of them are at the same level of writing but they are a pretty fun read, and since they don't have to worry about budget for voice actors and guest stars they can actually use some of the characters we'd otherwise never see again like Tempest, Rara etc

The slice of life stuff in the comics are really good. There's a story where one of Pinkie's sisters (I forgot her name but it was the scared one) wants to throw a party for a bunch of people she invited but her trian breaks down but she keeps going on because she's dedicated to making her sister happy but Maud thinks of a way to think like Pinkie by eating a bunch of candy and Maud plans the party with a rocky stuff. Or one story arc where Big Macc has to get nails so he can fix the barn but there's a bunch of destractions that annoy him but in the end he ends up enjoying the things that had been happening to him. Sorry I suck at explaining things in a nutshell but they're really good.

I don't know the number, but there have been times where I found the plot underwhelming. Maybe the plot doesn't makes sense, or is filled with many potholes. Some either rushed or boring. And just times where the ending was underwhelming. There are some I do like, it's just that there are also some I dislike.

Because of 4chan.

It's a default answer of mine, though I have never read the comics, or been to 4chan. It still makes all sense in this world

Wonder if the Cosmos arc counted as that?

Yeah, I do remember the plot being confusing. Plus, it kinda messed with the show's canon. Just a weird arc.

I wished it got retconned like what happened with Siege Of The Crystal Empire there.
Like really

I actually liked cosmos arc.

Very plausible.

Comics industry is crashing

Manga is in because manga do what they wanna do. They don't let amateurs tell them what to do. They also don't care about Twitter.
