general Other Types Of Ponies

Can we say that there are other actual types of ponies other than the three main tribes or types of ponies, earth, unicorns and pegasus? Like, can we say that the crystal ponies and the Kirin are distinct from these three tribes?

Thanks.

The way I see it, Crystal Ponies and Bat Ponies are definitely subcategories, but Kirin are a separate species. They’re pony-ish, like changelings and zebras, but they aren’t ponies.

Oh, I always thought that the Kirin were a separate type or tribe of ponies. Good to know. So, Crystal ponies are a sub-tribe of Earth ponies and bat ponies are a sub-tribe of the Pegasi, right?

@Kamal900 Moving thread to Show Discussion.

It always struck me as Crystal ponies and Seaponies were a sub-section of Earth, Bat ponies are a sub-section of Pegasus, and Kirin a sub-section of Unicorn? But creatures like changeling aren't ponies at all

While I enjoy the concept of Bat Ponies having been Pegasi that were changed by Nightmare Moon/Princess Luna for story telling, and its been shown that she can make some if not most of the changes to their appearance, I don't follow it as their origin.

Canon: They're a sub group of ponies.

Head Canon: They had their own much smaller tribe that didn't migrate to Equestria, and have since grown and remained largely elsewhere with their own distinct way of life.

It's hard to say if there truly are other kind of ponies other than the main three. Batponies and Crystal ponies could be, but their skills are so close to that of pegasi and earth ponies that they are just variations. You could technically count kirin as a variation of unicorns, although it's hard to tell if they are even ponies at all. Yes they have a similar body shape, but some of the features are different. Plus, it seems they have a different form of magic that isn't pony magic. So I'd say they are more likely a separate species from ponykind altogether.

The way I see it, it would be hard to actually create a forth main pony type. The three we have are very iconic. Plus, it's hard to come up with a skill set that wouldn't just be a variant of the three main ones.

Well, the EP, Pegasus and unicorns are the true 3 races, with alicorns being a special case. It seems that crystal ponies are(mostly?) earth ponies, but maybe due to being close to the crystal heart for who knows how long they have developed slightly differently. Saddle Arabian ponies too, a population of the races in a different area that is usually separated from the other populations so they became slightly different. My guess is that, the ponies races are equivalent to species in the same genus(like lions and tigers) with the other "races" are more like subspecies of said species.

Kirins seem more like a relative to ponies that(just like the changelings) developed horns as well, like convergent evolution in animals(while the pony races are displaying divergent evolution) where they develop similar traits despite not being closely related(like saber-tooth animals appeared many times throughout the history). Thats how I see that. But its a magical land with talking ponies, so you can explain it however way you want.

I believe the diversity of pastel horse genus is far more vast than we’ll ever know. Apart from the four most well known, we got, at least actually ponies: Crystal, sea, and bats as seen in the show. While one exemplary was seen before, recent S10 pony comics shown kelpies far closely related to ponies.... by being literally ponies made of water :mlp_yeehaa:. Kirin are candidates for being ponies, or another species VERY closely related to them.

I believe changelings could be related to them as well, if you consider their comics origin canon (magical mix of swamp water, insects, and pony remains). So could be hippogriffs, if we take their real life mythological counterparts

there’s been an official mention of an Alicorn bat as well
