Ohio people should be excited for baseball next year in 2022, because the Cleveland Baseball Team of MLB announced they have changed their name of Indians to the Cleveland Guardians:kirin:  The team being named after the Hope Memorial Bridge that crosses the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio.  Interesting name:Daydreaming: indeed, what do all of you ponies think?

I feel like it's a minor league team name and logo. I thought that the Cleveland Spiders would have been a better name, a throwback to the team of the same name from 1887 - 1899. It would have been cool to see how they'd update a team's identity that's been defunct for over 100 years.

It’s an absurd idea to change the name at all. Making an issue out of a name like the Indians is just another way people imagine being offended by absolutely nothing. The team can call themselves whatever they want, but I’ll always call the Indians, regardless.

About. Damn. Time. The "Indians" nickname is racist. Their long-time Chief Wahoo logo is even more racist! Native Americans and their allies have been clamoring the franchise to change their name since the 1970s, and for good reason. They never consented to the "Indians" nickname, and Chief Wahoo is a stereotypical caricature of Native Americans. Dumping Chief Wahoo three years ago from their uniforms and caps never diminished its history and the protests.

Unlike their long-time nickname, "Guardians" makes a lot more sense. This picture from Wikipedia really shows the magnificent detail.

This statue is a Guardian of Traffic. Altogether, there are four of them along the Hope Memorial Bridge, which connects Cleveland's East (home of Progressive Field) and West Sides. These double-sided Art Deco statues are city icons. While "Spiders" (referencing the defunct Cleveland Spiders from the 19th Century) has nostalgia, "Guardians" screams "Cleveland" and works very well.

Bravo, Guardians, for the long-awaited change!

Cleveland Native Americans just doesn't have a good ring to it. The only reason anyone in the U.S. ever got called "Indians" was because Columbus was so excited to have his wahoo moment of finding a new route to India, he failed to even get an inkling that he was 8000 miles away from his intended destination.

And we only care about Columbus's "contribution" to U.S. history (he never even set foot in North America) because of a crap-ton of lobbying by the Knights of Columbus to turn him into a national holiday. Hmm. Maybe they were offended that their icon wasn't being treated with the utmost respect.

When I saw this, I just knew that people were going to be offended by this change. Imagine getting so upset over something like this.

Just because an insensitive caricature/term has been the mascot of a team for a very long time doesn't make it right, and that doesn't mean it can't be changed to be better.

Your words pretty much sums up how I feel on the matter. I’m 100% here for the change.
