Points and posts aren't same in the ranking system. Points can be awarded for a variety of things. It's customizable by the admins. I'm not sure if the point system used here is explained, but maybe somepony knows. I would ping Silky but she seems a bit overworked right now...

An admin can see what rules are in place for awarding points. And so far, I have not been able to find a full breakdown of how points are earned.
