I... I just go by what it says on the top right of the site. Next to your name is a little arrow, clicking that shows you how many posts you have left before you rank up.

It's actually points, not posts, and well, even if they're the same, it still doesn't make sense for me, mine says 34 points left for my next rank, and I'm in my 153th post, +34 posts doesn't make the necessary 200 posts for the butterfly rank, so?...

(maybe that guide post is just otdated and the current system is different)

Points and posts aren't same in the ranking system. Points can be awarded for a variety of things. It's customizable by the admins. I'm not sure if the point system used here is explained, but maybe somepony knows. I would ping Silky but she seems a bit overworked right now...

An admin can see what rules are in place for awarding points. And so far, I have not been able to find a full breakdown of how points are earned.
