spacestorm 183 July 15, 2013 Share July 15, 2013 Sticky or magnetic hooves may be true. Although sticky hooves could be more problematic, ponies would have a problem to keep them clean. We have already seen many times how items strangely can attach to their hooves, but it is also this - in Dragonshy they were climbing easily on very steep hillside. No, not only unicorns have magic - but only they can use, control and cast it consciously. The elements of harmony are also magical and can interact with any pony species. If comics are canon there is also an (visible) example of all Mane6 using magic - the magic of friendship.
ThatOnePerson 2 July 15, 2013 Share July 15, 2013 It is a cartoon about pastel colored talking ponies. Do not question it. Besides, with pinkie pie anyway, anything is possible.
Untitled Goose Q 5,137 July 15, 2013 Share July 15, 2013 I support the magic theory. After all, passive magic is shown with Pegasi, because why should just having wings allow you to walk on clouds? 1 On 4/22/2016 at 6:16 PM, The Nightly Spectre said: One does not ask why The Questioner is awesome. Cwanky 17,589 July 15, 2013 Share July 15, 2013 If I had to guess, I'd say that equines and most sentient races, not just the ponies have some innate magic or telekinetic power that allows them to grasp objects with their hooves, barring cartoon logic, which is far more consistently applied to Pinkie mainly . Unless I'm wrong, a normal pony shouldn't be able to bend its limbs the way Equestrian ponies do either: Then again regular ponies in our world don't have that high level of intelligence, let alone speech capabilities, magic and multi colored manes in those colors. Oh and since we're already in the discussion this is a clear example of a non pony demonstrating the same hoof grasping phenomenon (not really a big deal but eh -_-): Oh yea it also pretty effectively proves that alicorns and unicorns are not the only species capable of using magic directly. Gotta love Zecora.
Gigapony 650 July 15, 2013 Share July 15, 2013 OR, it's a cartoon about talking technicolour ponies and the animators decided to say "screw it, I don't feel like coming up with an alternative for this" when presented with the need for a pony to grab something. Plus, it looks adorable when they do it.
Ihei 713 July 15, 2013 Share July 15, 2013 Well, you see, kids. Once upon a time, Everything you see in cartoons like MLP doesn't use logic. Ponies can grasp things with their hooves.. but one thing: they don't have fingers. Based on a true story.
RrVPfX9cPtw59FpC 1,304 July 31, 2013 Share July 31, 2013 My guess would be that they somehow bend the ends of their hooves so that they can somewhat grab things. I know this isn't possible in real life, but this is Equestria. Scootalove 10,689 July 31, 2013 Share July 31, 2013 I guess it is pretty magical, since I could imagine them grabbing stuff with their hooves which is possible in Equestria. But in real life, it is the exact opposite probably. Credit: Moony © Forum FAQ Forum Rules

kyle01x 3 October 19, 2013 Share October 19, 2013 I've wondered how hooves work in the MLP universe. If the hooves work like they would IRL, it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to effectively hold anything, but in MLP, we see on a few occasions ponies successfully hold various items. (Like the stick in the example.) Is it just that hooves in MLP are different to those in real life? I guess it is an animated show, and isn't expected to follow reality, but I'd like to hear other peoples thoughts.
Scootalove 10,689 October 19, 2013 Share October 19, 2013 Hooves in the show don't use the same formula of realism for real horses in real life, since real horses can't pick up objects with their hooves while ponies in the show can. Malinter 3,064 October 19, 2013 Share October 19, 2013 many fics joke that only earth ponies can hold things in there hooves like that as part of there own magic. Pegusi either use their mouth or wings and the unicorns with the horn using magic. Jokuc 8,173 October 19, 2013 Share October 19, 2013 Well basically there is no logic behind it at all. It's just shown as this so the ponies can do more stuff in the show. Otherwise they would not have as many possibilities and it would not be as fun to watch.
Noazark 67 October 20, 2013 Share October 20, 2013 In reality, it's just for the show's convinence, the animators just say screw it and make them like hands. But in the MLP universe's respect, I think hooves have a bit of magic in them, helping any pony to pick things up. Signature by the amazing LittleRawr. Avatar by the as equally amazing Breeze. Legacy Dash 439 October 20, 2013 Share October 20, 2013 I have no idea. Quantum physics maybe. There is is magic in Equestria, so, maybe it's simply magic. I guess really, they writers had to have some way for them to pick stuff up, apart from the mouth. Signature by . My personal website: Mitchfizz05.net. Mars Caramel 319 October 20, 2013 Share October 20, 2013 I've seen ponies hold/balance objects on the soles of their hooves, but I don't remember seeing them hold anything in a way which would actually require the use of fingers. But we've even seen 1 or 2 moments in the show where ponies possibly used 2 of their hooves to hold something, (One of the spa ponies holding a hoof-file, for example) and honestly, I would kind of prefer if it was like this. Unless there is evidence that ponies holding objects in a seemingly questionable way is the work of magic.
Andaasonsan 3,205 October 20, 2013 Share October 20, 2013 I suppose it's possible that Applejack has those wedged into her frog: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frog_(horse) The scene that really hurts my head is during Pinkie Pie's "Smile" song, they show Ponies jumping rope 1 Application REJECTED! windy_prance 114 October 21, 2013 Share October 21, 2013 Maybe they work the same way for the horses in Gulliver's Travels? Underneath the horse's hooves, there is an concave indent that allows them to grab objects similar to if we as human would use fingers to pinch?
lomk 20,663 October 21, 2013 Share October 21, 2013 It's Lauren freaking Faust who worked on the show. She's got a way of doing that, you know? Don't believe me? The 2nd Mass 28 October 21, 2013 Share October 21, 2013 My thought is that their hooves are covered with incredibly small hairs like a geckos feet. they can stick to or "grab" anything using van der waals force to attach to the item at an atomic level, like a gecko, and they can then easily drop them, like a gecko, this explanation would allow them to be able to choose what to stick to or "grab" and explain how they can hold seemingly any object. Bendy 1,821 October 21, 2013 Author Share October 21, 2013 All Ponies must got passive magical hooves, to allow them to pick up stuff and do stuff like a Human hand, that otherwise would be impossible. Andaasonsan 3,205 October 21, 2013 Share October 21, 2013 So here is my problem with the Magic Hooves theory: Why do the Earth Ponies pick up things with their mouth 95% of the time then? Application REJECTED!
Rockymoo 2,137 October 21, 2013 Share October 21, 2013 It's really just one of those cartoony quirks that aren't meant to be payed too much attention to. I'm pretty sure in one episode Fluttershy starts biting her hooves and comical "fingernails" start flying all over the place. Forget which episode that was in, though. Then you obviously haven't seen the big pile of hoof shavings that results when a farrier gives a horse a "hooficure". But yeah, in the end "don't think to hard about this" is probably the only answer that works. 1 Application REJECTED!
