Love and tolerate?

I see everywhere, that bronies are supposed to love and tolerate things. Why do they say that?

Personally, I can not believe in this saying. I do not love most living things and I can not tolerate most of the things around me (internet and irl).

But that's just me. I want to know what you think about this "Love and tolerate" stuff.

Why the eff not? I mean, sure, you could go off on a nihilist rant about how nothing really matters, but at the end of the day, being happy feels better than being unhappy (by definition).

I agree with the tolerate. South Park made a good point. You should tolerate things, but you shouldn't have to accept something you don't want to. A lot of our fandom are way too defensive about liking MLP.

 

You should add a, "partially" option up there in the poll.

Even tho it might feel stupid to not defend yourself in certain times (like when you're provoked by a troll), in the end the best way is to love and tolerate.

OFC this doesn't count if your life is in danger and you have to defend yourself. But then you have to think "Can you live with the guilt"...

Definitely, one of my personal moral guiding stars in life is simply to try and love all sentient creatures. I take that very seriously because I think it requires us to revise our understandings of justice and quite a few other concepts.

I realize it is just a line from one of the most heart-warming and awesome TV shows, but I still think it is true in different ways.

Well, sort of. Although the message behind it is a good one and more loving and tolerating is necesaary in modern society, far too many people use it as an excuse to hate on others.

I've seen people anger haters more than once and when the hater does finally snap, simply tell him to 'learn to love and tolerate' instead of actually loving and tolerating him like we bronies say we have to do.

 

 

TL;DR: Far too many people use it as an excuse instead of using it like a sort of moral guiding.

I think there are a number of considerations that have to be taken in this case.

1. How do you know he is a murderer? Even if the person had a fair trial, one has to be cautious in saying that a particular event happened in the past. Trials are all about reconstructing what actually happened, we will never, for sure, know who is guilty and who is not because we cannot directly access the past.

2. Even if he did indeed murder someone, is it not worth it to try and understand the person's reasons for doing so and the thoughts which led them to it?

3. Does the suffering of the guilty really solve anything? How does it ameliorate what already happened?

4. Does this act take away from the person's humanity? If we are serious about loving humanity, should we not try and have compassion on this person?

Your points stray off topic a tad, since I speak of not this one person's morality, but of the greater good. You only focused on one of my points. I'm saying that you have to put up with the fact that there will be fighting and we can't change that. To an extent... The phrase originated as a troll repellent and that's still all it is. It was never intended to be adopted as a life motto. It also contradicts what Fluttershy learned about being a pushover; if you tolerate everything then you will surely become a doormat.

Good points, I'm sorry that I get a little carried away on the topic of justice; its a favorite of mine.

Regardless, I definitely understand your reasoning. At first, certainly, it seems strange to love everyone, even those who don't love others or those who have committed heinous crimes. Personally, I would agree, we don't have to love everyone in a personal way and it makes good sense not to in many cases! Perhaps love isn't the word I'm looking for here so much as it is compassion. In that case, I definitely agree with you; though I would add the caveat that we should have compassion for all people.

Lots of haters hate because they are sad for some reason. Hate just encourages more hate. I've read many stories about haters turned into brony because of the idea of love and tolerance. So-Love and tolerance 4ever! (On the other hand, we can't tolerate literally everything-but tolerating stuff that doesn't hurt anyone is always the best choice).

I have very little desire to love someone who is treating my like dirt. I believe people should strive to be make this a loving and tolerating society, but I really don't think anyone should have to feel love for those who act the opposite of this, examples : abusers, rapists, bullies.

I agree on trying to understand why the person committed murder in the first place, but usually you can tell whether or not the person had a good reason from the get go. Like, raping a murdering a child. There's not a chance in hell the person had a good reason for that.

With vengeance, it's just to feel good knowing the bad person who wronged you or someone you loved has suffered for their what they did.

I think the guy who locked up his daughter for years in an underground room beneath his home so that he could rape her repeatedly, and who wouldn't let any of the children he had with her who were sick get medical attention, should no longer be considered nor treated like a human being.

I disagree with this, not being nice to people just because there not nice and not giving people a chance to change doesn't help anyone. It makes you act mean and they never change.

Personally I think once someone reveals that they are a heretic, than they remove themselves from a religion. Most religions are very vague though, so everyone could interpret it differently. I'm confuzzled as to what your definition of heretic is here. But, this is an off-topic post so feel free to disregard as the Great Moderator Flame Of Awesome blazes through.
