Yea I'm huge fan of all the underground bands of the 80's. Stuff like Sonic Youth, Black Flag, Social Distortion, Pixies, Hüsker Dü, and Fugazi. I also like metal from the 80's. Stuff like Celtic Frost, Death, etc. I despise glam metal though. British bands like Joy Division, The Smiths, Killing Joke, etc. are also good IMO. I also like early grunge like early Nirvana, early Soundgarden and Mudhoney. It has more of a raw sound compared to the stuff from the 90's.

Death is 80's? I thought they were the next decade :o

Oh, they were formed in 83.

I thoroughly enjoy 80's thrash. It was the birth of thrash, and this first wave had some amazing bands and albums. Also, hardcore punk. LIke Minor Threat.

I HAD TO FALL TO LOSE IT ALL BUT IN THE END IT DOESN'T EVEN MATTER /WRISTS

I went through a big 80's phase in the later half of my high school years. Most people already know the big 80's bands, so it would be pointless for me to name them here. So I might as well give some more obscure picks.

Band: NRG

Description: Transformers fans know this one.

.

Band: Green Jelly

Description: "Green Jello Sucks!"

I have only one word for this...

METALLICA

That is really all you need to know. They are a great band with songs.

Metallica was really good in the 80's but, Slayer might actually be better. I actually prefer Celtic Frost over Metallica. :o

Slayer, Anthrax, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Megadeth, and of course Mettalica

freaking thrash metal.

I mean who doesn't like some Raining Blood, madhouse, Number of the Beast, Electric Eye, Hanger 18, Master of Puppets every now and then.

Fortunately, Coroner's first two albums were in the 80's. Punishment for Decadence and RIP for the win! Some of the early Sepultura stuff was great too, Morbid Visions, Schizophrenia and Beneath The Remains, as well as Motorhead and Iron Maiden. Hell, my favourite Maiden album came from the 80s!

Well it looks someone decided to take the answer straight outta my mouth!

There are some things from the 80's that are just not to be fucked with.

And while I don't like all glam bands, there's one that I've always loved to death.

All of my "buck yeahs" go to this thread. Two of the best opening tracks in metal history:

"Angel of Death" from Slayer's 3rd album Reign in Blood (1986)

"Blackened" from Metallica's 4th album ...And Justice for All (1988)

I've been wonderfully fortunate to have seen both of these bands live (for free, no less), and they put on incredible performances. I can only imagine what it was like during the seething early years.

I guess I'm the only one so far on this thread that likes '80s arena rock, soft rock, or mainstream pop/rock. In my opinion, the early to mid '80s were a great time for pop music as a wide variety of genres/styles of music all shared pop success. I think pop music declined in the late '80s, though, as early hip-hop, dance-pop, and teen pop dominated, although some of the glam metal and pop/rock of that time was okay.

I really have a hard time picking favorite artists. I judge individual songs more so than artists, and since I listen almost exclusively to singles, I avoid saying that I really like any artist in particular, since I often don't know enough about any artist's total musical output to make such a judgment. Some '80s artists which made a lot of singles that I like are:

Billy Joel

Bruce Springsteen

Bryan Adams

The Cars

Huey Lewis And The News

John Mellencamp

Journey

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers

Van Halen
