I think it is meant to make it easier to sort - not every recycler can handle every type of plastics, so if a bin is going to a recycler who can only handle types 1 and 2, they should put that on the bin and you should only put types 1 and 2 on that bin. A different recycler may be able to handle (say) 3 and 4, but may require them to be separated from 1 and 2 as they are handled differently.

People used to say to me that they hadn’t invented stuff for stuff beyond 2s but that was a long time ago. By now there’s probably stuff for 3s and 4s and all that.
