Racism towards earth ponies

I think that the reason is pretty obvious. If you could choose between being able to do magic, fly or not being able to do either of those things, what would you choose? I think that almost nobody would choose the latter. I think that people's OC are the type of pony that they want to be. And haven't we all dreamed of being able to do magic or fly? Of course you have. And then you make either a pegasus or a unicorn to live out those dreams.

I don't have any OC's, but I do sometimes like to draw the (human) characters I made up for a book/TV show thing I'm working on in pony form. There are 12 of them all together, so I spread it out pretty evenly when I ponified them (four unicorns, four pegasi and four earth ponies). Now that I think about, my two least favorites of my characters (although I like all of them!) are both earth ponies. Then again, one of my favorites is also an earth pony, so :shrug:

 

I agree though, you don't see many OCs that are Earth Ponies, perhaps because they are seen as less "special."

What?? Earth ponies are clearly the strongest and agile of the 3 types. An Earth Pony with a Bo Staff could pretty much destroy everyone.

No, it's actually pretty coincidental that I drew them as Earth Ponies. I don't want to go too much in detail about my series I'm making up, because this thread isn't about that and I don't want to get off topic (though PM me if you are interested), but I basically drew them as Earth Ponies b/c I drew their mothers as Earth Ponies and I figured pony race is basically genetic. And I drew their moms as Earth Ponies b/c I felt it fit their personalities better. As for why they are my two least favorites, nothing against them, really, just I don't relate to them as well as some and well, someone had to be ranked last!

I agree, earth ponies need more love in OC's. My OC is a pegasus, because I truly believe that if I was a pony, I'd be a pegasus. But I have nothing against earth ponies - IMO they do the most important jobs. My girlfriend's OC is an earth pony and she's awesome

Actually, in the hearth warming eve episode, they say that ONLY the earth ponies can grow food, just as much as how only unicorns can do magic. I've also heard (though I'm not sure where) that earth ponies are supposed to be 2-3x stronger than any other type of pony.

 

Then how come rainbow is can arm wrestle applejack? Didn't she win in the competition? Atleast that's how my memory serves me

The root of the problem is in the show because they don't give the earth ponies the place they deserve, actually earth ponies are considered to be the lowest social class of the 4 (including alicorns too), tell me how many earth ponies you see in Canterlot?

 

there's a minimum of earth ponies in Canterlot and they do not so succesful jobs there

Like I have said before, Earth ponies are boss, they can expand on skills without the need of magic or flying.. though they lack large base of abilities if they had magic or flying they make it by without them.

I Have to admit, It does seem apparent that the balance of power is rather tilted. I mean, come on. One can fly, escape just about any threatening event, reach speeds up to mach 1. One can bend reality, manipulate objects through telekineses, and instantaniously teleport. And the other... can grow plants.

People say that earth ponies are physically more capable, but if that is the case than Applejack would have thwarted Rainbow Dash in the race fore the falling leaves. Granted, Rainbow Dash is an athlete, however I have gotten the impression that she basically only flies, with the occasional exception of waiting with her friends. This would mean that her wingpower should be, and is, immensely trained. Her legs however... they simply should not have the strength and stamina to compete with those of Applejack. Applejack has lived her life on a farm, training her limbs with hard manual labour, and should show no effort defeating a pony who spends no time on her legs in a race. Unless you completely ignore the basic facts supplied by the wiki. I.e, earth ponioes are physically more capable.

Um...all I have to say on this topic is that in a fanfic, which was otherwise a very good story, I read "once you went earth pony you never went back."

 

I was not happy with the connotations of that sentence.

Well, it seems pretty obvious to me why earth ponies aren't loved very much. Both flying and magic have a 'cool' novelty factor, flying and magic are probably two of the most common answers given to 'what superpower would you want'. Earth ponies don't have much going for them. Growing food and extra strength isn't enough to interest most people.

You do realize they have super strength.

Take the episode "Hearts and Hooves day" for example. Big Mac and Cheerlie were both able to crash through solid, wooden doors without problem. Big Mac in particular could drag a house with him.

 

In sort:

Pegasus: FLY

Unicorns: MAGIC

Earth ponies: SUPER STRENGTH.

 

What Abilites do you want for your adventure.

If you say earth ponies don't have super strength then your ruining it for the rest of us who believe.

 

Plus Epona is an earth pony and she is one of the best horses around.

(If you know what I'm talking about you get a gold star. Not sure what your going to do with it, but you get one).

I think the fandom only ignores them a little because, not trying to be offensive here but, they're not really anything special. Ponies exist in our world. A lot of us see ponies on a fairly regular basis. We've all seen one before, and we all think they're pretty cool. But, let's face it, unicorns, pegasus, alicorns and all that are like ponies with extra abilities. Pegasi, being able to fly. Unicorns, performing magic. And alicorns, both. Even though earth ponies are stronger physically than unicorns, that still doesn't beat the fact that earth ponies can't perform magic and the unicorns can. The same thing with pegasi and flying. 

I do like the earth ponies, though. They're honest, hard-working ponies and they do deserve a little more attention than we give them.

What fans seem to be missing, is that in civilized Equestria *nature does not function by itself*

Seasons do not change, ponies change them, birds do not build nests, ponies build nests for them, animals after hibernation have to be waken up, the weather appears to be 100 percent pegasi controlled, even sun and moon do not move by themselves, the Alicorns move them.

As far as I understand plants do not really grow themselves either, they need to be helped to grow. And that's why only earth ponies are capable of growing food, only they have the magic needed for plants to grow. I suppose if Rainbow Dash dug a hole in the ground and put seeds in it, they wouldn't even grow, and even Twilight would probably have to cast a spell to make something happen (she has spells for everything) but it would not be natural growth.

 

On the other hand, who wants an OC with superpower- carrot growing... maybe me...

Actually Daydream is supposed to be a unicorn with a broken horn and thus lame magic, but these wings in the generator were sooo pretty I couldn't resist. That is all. I didn't want her to be a regular earth pony because I wanted something magic. I do think Earth Ponies are super cute though!

The answer is simple: earth ponies cant fly or perform magic, so they seem less interesting by comparison. Are earth ponies bad though? not at all, it just takes a little more thought when it comes to writing them into fanfic or drawing them doing interesting things. While they might be discriminated against in the human world and our community, they are equals among their horned and winged brethren, as they are as vital to the ecosystem as the unicorns and pegasi are. Without the earth ponies, the other races would starve to death, as theyre the ones in touch with nature and possess the ability to produce food.

Not just because Pinkeh is an earth pony, but because they don't have any magical powers.

 

They don't rely on wings or magic to get things done. They rely on their own ingenuity to get things done. Which in my opinion is much, much more interesting than magical powers or wings.

I don't really see any racism for earth ponies, its just that people love Pegasus and Unicorns more. But since, Alicorns are pretty much a unicorn and pegasus, there really shouldn't be racism at all.

I think they tried to make them look better in Hearth's Warmth Day episode when they tried to outline why the earth ponies were so important to the others. Hang on, there's a Fan Fiction about this with Applebloom where she hates being a Earth pony...

im actually reading a fanfic that takes place in the future, and all ponies have the ability to fly or use magic, due to the introduction of amulets. they were all equal before, but now they can share all the duties, and reap all of the benefits. its quite interesting.

It's probably because Pegasi and Unicorns have "better" or more desirable powers then earth ponies do, to be honest I would rather be a Pegasi and be able to fly rather than be an earth pony and be good with plants

So yes in this scenario the best aren't earth ponies (101-1000 ytube subs) or blank flanks (1-100 subs) and would be more powerful (can do magic or can fly additionally). But you know what, there's a lot more earth ponies in ponyville than the other 3 "races" and it's the unity of earth ponies, unicorns, and pegasi that was at the heart of "Hearth's Warning Day"  and for the show. I mean you have 2+2+2= the mane 6 and if that couldn't be more clear about diversity + unity i don't know what else is. I don't see people writing off AJ and Pinkie because they are "inferior" not should anyone do the same for earth ponies.

Mainly because of a scene in Call of the Cutie where she takes a sip out of a punch bowl. They were going to have her burp afterwards, but that was edited out.
