music Anypony collect vinyl records?

Vinyl seems to be fading, but I want to know if there's someone besides me who supports this hobby regardless. If you have any records, post some pics or just talk about them here. I'll start with some of mine.

 

I got these two in the mail recently. The 10" is The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-la-la Band's "'Born Into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward.'", and the 12" is Converge's "Axe to Fall" on neon yellow vinyl (pretty sweet).

What? I thought it was CDs that are fading... regardless, I would love to start buying/collecting vinyl records (especially since Coroner albums are friggin' CHEAPER in vinyl!! ) but I don't have a vinyl player right now, so I'll have to hold off. It's some pretty cool stuff though. Plus, before I came to this forum, I was on another forum (for heavy metal - I know, not surprising) and most of the users there collected vinyls as well. Sometimes because they want it for the sweet sound quality, sometimes for the cool extras (like the exclusive vinyl cover for Coroner's Punishment for Decadence) and sometimes because its the only format you can get it in. Either way, they love their vinyls, and so do many others.

As the resident old fart, I STILL have some of my old vinyl. These would include some Who, Doors, Tom Petty, Miles Davis, not to mention the Star Wars soundtrack and some others. I also have a USB Turntable, so I was able to record them to my computer and load my iPod.....win!

Speaking of Tom Petty, one of his CDs actually has a place right in the middle where he comes on and starts talking to you and explains that this is where someone listening to vinyl or a tape would have to get up and flip it over. Too cool.

As you probably guess from my username, I do collect vinyls. However, I do not have any in ivory white. I'm still looking, though. I got most of them from my sister, who bought a lot of 100, but only wanted a few out of them. I have about 85 LP's and 2 45's. I prefer listening to whole albums.

I don't think there are any MLP musicians that have records, though that would be cool. I thought The Polish Ambassador had some LP's, but I can't find any now. Amazon has a huge vinyl library, if you want to look there.

They're not collectables or anything, just records. Does anyone else appreciate music in this form?

I’ve heard they are supposed to have “superior" sound quality. I’ve wanted to give one a try myself. They give a room a real rustic feel to it which is neat. Would you recommend them?

while i'm not as much a vintage nut as my dad is (he absolutely adores cassette tapes and vinyls), i have to admit i find vinyls to be quite a nice thing to have. it's a wholly different feeling owning them as opposed to owning a CD. it's like they have some kind of class to them, like an aged wine. everyone can burn CDs nowadays, but no one can exactly make a vinyl with such ease.

 

as for they superior sound quality, it depends on the recording of the vinyl itself. if it's a poorly mastered recording on the vinyl, or an old mastered one, like say old Beatles records or something like that, it won't necessarily be better than the most probably newer CD releases will have, which often contain remastered versions of the album's songs plus goodies like old demo tracks and the like.

 

however, a newly produced vinyl recording often will have superior recording quality to it than a CD will have. the reason being that an audio CD is only able to have a certain kind of limit of audio quality on it.

 

standard CD audio quality is usually set to 1411 kbp/s, which means that audio quality is running at 1411 kilobytes of data per second, as well as the standard frequency of 44.1 KHz (44100 Hz), which also exists in MP3 files, by the way, as well as 16 bits per sample. a lot of audio data, you could say it is, and it certainly is that. however, in the case of vinyls, the amount of samples per second is limitless, i'd believe, which means that the audio quality extends beyond the threshold of a CD. i believe that the frequency of vinyl audio is at around 96 KHz (96000 Hz), 24 bits per sample, and 2116 kbp/s. the audio quality is this high because sound is analogue by nature, and the audio on vinyl is analogue, while CD audio is digital. therefor it can contain more audio information in it.

 

that's the extent of my knowledge of this. now, if it's possible to HEAR the difference between audio quality is up to debate. usually you wouldn't hear a damn difference unless you have some shit-expensive 5000 dollar stereo equipment to spare. but that doesn't change the fact that newer vinyls do have higher audio quality to them than CDs have. it's still worth collecting vinyl record though, i say. a lot of old music were primarily released on vinyl, and is usually held in higher regard than CD releases of the albums. plus, vinyl records are a lot cooler to own than CDs, and they don't break nearly as easy as CDs can do.

 

tl;dr vinyls are great and yes i recommend you to collect them!

If my collection wasn't in the attic I would post a picture. I have some 250 records. The only reason I'm not using them now is that my player broke and I've yet to fix it. When it comes to crooners, vinyl is the only way to go, and I find any crackling and popping to be charming regardless of what I'm listening to.

I don't listen to vinyl enough. I love the sound of old records. I've got a few Johnny Cash records that I do play sometimes, when I'm in the mood.

Being a 90's kid i didnt even know what the heck a vinyl even was lol.

 

Nobody in my family even have those anyway but i would think they would be as effective as a regular disc only bigger and sound quality is a littler worse.

I mostly listen to music on my computer as well. But I got into vinyl because records are lot more cooler to own than CD's. It acts like a collector's piece for yourself while also supporting the artist as well which is pretty awesome.

 

I usually buy records I highly enjoy after listening to them on iTunes or Spotify or whatever.

That's exactly what my brother does. Listening to his music on Itunes then going out and buying the albums. Except he does it with Cd's. Except he does have one very rare Carpathian Forest demo cassete, I don't even know how he managed to find a seller.
