They're cool, I have one of those Radio/CD/Tape/Aux and 33/45/78 record player things that looks like an old Radio, and a few old rock records to go with it, I should post some pictures or something of some of them.

They're overrated. They are an older technology and are obsolete. The only real use of them is for collectors and such. As for those who say they "Sound better", they don't. (Well, they do, but only if the album you're putting on digital was originally on vinyl, as audio-quality loss is inevitable in any conversion, but this hardly makes vinyl a "Superior" medium).

I do admit they're cool to have around as a collector, but personally I don't really listen to them, no.

I just like the looks of them and I think the novelty of listening to music from a record is kinda cool(and it does have somewhat of it's own sound to it)

"You know, I don't know who or what you are Methos, and I know you don't want to hear this, but you did teach me something. You taught me that Life's about change, about learning to accept who you are, good or bad. And I thank you for that."

There are a couple of things that make vinyl legitimately viable, in terms of sound quality. There are plenty of pre-1982 recordings that haven't had a decent CD transfer. Also, for many modern recordings vinyl tends to lend itself a better mastering because the big corporations want to make $, and they want as many people as possible to pay for the vinyl rather than the CD or MP3.

In terms of the pure format sound quality though, it stinks. Hipsters can keep all their warmth talk to themselves. If you listen to a good digital master through a high-quality DAC and amp (possibly with tubes) then it will utterly destroy the relative vinyl version. Reel-To-Reel on the other hand...

I personally love vinyl records: I’ve got about 300 or so of the things as I’m a collector: I’ve made a list of some reasons why….

I’ve done various comparison tests, and sound wise compared to digital it always sounded better.

I love the big album art

Rare finds: like the stuff that wasn’t so popular when new but as it’s aged has become like fine wine.

I think a record playing looks cooler than anything other music format playing (I know that ones kinda silly)

And last but not least: it might sound odd to some but owning artists for me on vinyl, is always more exciting and more special: I have Daft Punk- R.O.M on record but I had it on CD first, and buying it on CD was never as much of an excitement as owning the vinyl record.

I mainly got my player because vinyls intrigued me.

Think that's what first got me interested

Yeah I guess they're pretty expensive. But really if you use websites like Discogs (if you're buying older records anyway) you can get them fairly cheap

Just on a personal note I hate buying records online usually: I like going to a shop and the suprise and the joy of finding that artist I love by chance (I know that might sound weird). I do buy some records online though.

As for price my local charity shop always sells classics: and they sell them for about £2.00 and I'm talking the proper rare stuff that costs a fortune online

This. This is one of the best things about collecting vinyl. That feel when you find one if your favorite artists buried in a heap of crap. Or when you find a hella rare album in the cheap bin. My rarest album has to be That'll Be the Day by Buddy Holly. It was released a few months before he died and they stopped pressing it when he did. I found it in the $1 bin at a thrift store! Ho yeah!

I had that exact situation a few weeks ago when I was vinyl shopping with a friend of mine when I found Human After All by Daft Punk on vinyl. Not necessarily rare but to be honest I never knew it existed prior to then.

  • 1 month later...

I got a turntable for Christmas: The Audio-Technica AT-LP60. A lot of people say it's a great entry-level turntable, especially for less than $100.

Right now, I only have one record: Turn On The Bright Lights by Interpol. This is what it looks like: http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=2569370

It's a reissue. 120g. 33 RPM. Came with a free mp3 download code.

The cover has some slight ring wear, a few creases, and there's a little tear along the top edge. The inner sleeve has a small tear on one side too. The vinyl itself is in pretty good condition. The only issue I really have with it is that there's a tiny scratch on the first side, causing some "pops" on the second half of the first song (and the beginning of the second song too.) There's also a tiny chip on the edge. Other than that though, it plays fine (except for some crackling during the quieter moments) and I absolutely love it. XD

I got some more coming soon. As Celestia said: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzpj1fT7acQ

Def. awesome stuff especially if you are into collecting. I have a couple of Iron Maiden records and Pink Floyd ones as well. I love the artwork too btw :3

Vinyls rule

Even though I already have all of their albums on CD, I'm probably gonna end up getting at least one or two Pink Floyd records too lol

  • 2 weeks later...

I got two more records. Are You Experienced and Axis: Bold As Love, both by The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

2013 mono reissues. 200g. 33 RPM.

Are You Experienced is the first one I opened up. The cover is fine except for a light tear on the top edge. Inner sleeve is fine too. It has some some cool photos on one side and some information on the other. The actual record itself is fine as well. Plays great!

Axis has a really cool gatefold with lyrics. Inner sleeve has another awesome photo on one side and some more information on the other. Cover, inner sleeve, and vinyl are all absolutely fine. And again, it plays fantastic!

Here's what they look like:

Are You Experienced - http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=4360660

Axis: Bold As Love -  http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=4350677

Anybody else wanna share their records? :3

Awesome I’ve got an Audio-Technica to, mines the LP-120: best turntable I've ever owned. What do you think of yours so far?

I’ll share my recent new collection, I came home with about 5 records today going for barging prices, and stuff I’d been wanting to get my hooves on to for a while

Musique- In the Bush 12” single with 3 mixes on it.

De Barge- In a special way album: always wanted the album for the song ‘stay with me’.

Billy Ocean- Nights feel like getting down album, been waiting AGES for the day I could have ‘stay the night’ song from the album on vinyl and hear other stuff he’d made from the same album.

Some Philly World label 12” single, same label did some R&B/Funk song by Cashmere I liked so I bought it, it was kinda ok but not that great tbh.

Donna Summer- A Love Trilogy LP: second copy but with cover in better condition, keeping both copies of it though.

Stargard- What you waiting for 12” single, with Smile on the B side, liked some of there other song’s, this one I ain’t played yet.

I have a bunch of records.  I got started with collecting them because I was a big collector of Alvin and the Chipmunks stuff, and a ton of their albums are only available on vinyl.  Then I picked up a few other records besides chipmunks too.

I think the sound is much different, not better and not worse.  There's obviously more distortion on the record, but they also are capable of levels of music that CD's aren't.  For the average listener, I'd say CD's will definitely appeal to them more, but to a smaller niche market, records definitely have something to offer.

They are fun to collect :D

I should also mention that the other thing I really love about collecting records is it opens you up to so much music that you can't get on CD.  A lot of popular records have been remade on CD, but there's still so much music out there that doesn't get listened to just because nobody cares enough to put it on the market on CD's.

I got three vinyls myself, all from Rush.  I got 2112, Hemispheres, and Moving Pictures.  I got them all for less than $10 at some flea market in Wisconsin.  2112 and Hemispheres are basically in mint condition, but Moving Pictures look like it's been to Hell and back.  It's good album too, and I fell bad for it.

I only listened to a few songs from those albums once.  I have a record player, but the needle broke and I can't find another one anywhere.  Once I get one, Imma be playing my jams all day!! B)

Dude I used to love Alvin and the Chipmunks: I got the sing again with the Chipmunks album about a month or two ago on vinyl. Alvin makes me laugh when he annoys Dave

True, like I like how you get those song's that went mainstream at the time and still popular and stuff, but get the original vinyl album and I can have that peace of music history and all the other song's on the album too that I didn't know and discover more about an artist.

I love vinyl records and I am a HUGE vinyl record collector! I have a record player too.

For original records I have:

Let It Be - The Beatles

The Beatles' Second Album

The Beatles 1967-70

Rubber Soul - The Beatles

The White Album - The Beatles

Beatles '65

Magical Mystery Tour - The Beatles

"I want to hold your hand/I saw her standing there" 45 rpm - The Beatles

"She loves you/I'll get you" 45 rpm - The Beatles

Unfortunately my Beatles' Abbey Road and Help! vinyls are not original, they're the 2009 digitally remastered versions. Still love them though! I also have a bunch of Eagles records too.

I love the sound of them! They have this scratchy sound that makes it sound awesome and real in some way. We own lots of vinyl records, however our player broke when I was young so we haven't been able to listen to any =c

I heard on the radio not too long ago that vinyls are coming back cause so many people collect them :P That's quite cool

Got another one. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco.

The front and back of the cover, plus the gatefold, are fine. No complaints there. Unfortunately, each inner sleeve has a little tear at the bottom. However, the actual vinyl records are fine and play great. Only some minor crackling during the really quiet parts. :)

Here's what it looks like: http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=1073285
