I'd just like to point out that Disney didn't just come out and say, "Hey! We're gonna make another trilogy just to milk the franchise even more! Gahahaha!"

Ever since the production of A New Hope, George Lucas had envisioned 3 trilogies of the Star Wars franchise in general. The prequel trilogy (I-III), the original trilogy (IV-VI), and the sequel trilogy (VII-IX) were all pre-planned and originally all had sketchy script outlines written by Lucas himself. One of the movies in the sequel trilogy was going to focus on the Droids specifically with virtually no interaction. Another idea was to just have the movies focus on the Wookies. Even a screenplay was written that Luke actually had another unknown sister that was the head of a radical space militia. All of these ideas bit the dust and Lucas rewrote some scripts to just fit in with the whole "Skywalker" arc that focuses on the fates of Anakin and Luke.

When Lucas got done with the original trilogy, bare in mind that it took nearly 10 years for the whole 3 movies to be completed, and Lucas was suffering from burnout/exhaustion. It wouldn't be until the 90's until Lucas actually had the energy to go back to the big screen and produce the prequel trilogy episodes. However, episodes I-II are considered by Star Wars fans and even general audiences to be the worst episodes in the entire Star Wars franchises, just because of cheesy plot twists, dialogue, and JAR JAR BINKS. Lucas was so worried that any future installment would damage the reputation on the franchise, so he was VERRRRRY hesitant to even product Revenge of the Sith. Luckily, when he finally got done with Episode III, it was the best episode critically received of the entire prequel trilogy.

Again, the prequel trilogy took roughly 10 years to edit the scripts and finish filming, a heavy toll on Lucas and his company. And with Episodes I-II considered to be the weakest points in the franchise, Lucas, not surprisingly, was now very anal about not making 3 more episodes. Here's a quote from a recent interview from him:

Now, with Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilms, it makes since that Lucas' company now has the energy to have a sequel trilogy made, what with the success of the Cartoon Network show Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Younger generations are getting more and more hyped for more Star Wars features and that's what Lucasfilms was looking for. It's a very strategic move.

So, bottom line, don't blame Disney for "planning" more Star Wars movies. Lucas planned to have 9 movies from the start.

EDIT: Disney didn't screw around with the production of the Marvel movies The Avengers and Thor, now did they? At least have some faith in them before passing judgment. :P

Did I say I was playing the blame game? I said I'm not interested in it because in my opinion it's done and had a good run as is, nothing more.

Are you telling me that I misunderstood your post's context and that I typed all that out for nothing?

GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH WEEH WAAAH FFOOFOFOFOF FUFUFUFUFUFUF HHHNNGNGGNGNNGGN

Well, I guess my post can just directly go out to all the other people who don't have faith for Disney in this topic then. :P

Totalbiscuit summarized my thoughts up nicely on Twitter today:

"Forgive me if I'm not overly worried that the company who released The Avengers, Brave, POTC and Wreck-it-Ralph now has Star Wars."

He left out Tangled, one of my favorite movies of all time, but the point is made.

Did Lucas need help in ruining the franchise? he was doing that fine by himself. Just kidding, take it with a grain of salt though. We never really got to experience the heydays of Star Wars so, I don't know why complain on something that hasn't been good in 20 years.

I've grown up with Star Wars since I was a kid and ever since, I've...kinda grown out of the whole star wars franchise. I don't hate it, just kinda lost interest in it

Although I can predict the reaction of others being this

This news sounds promising and for everyone's knowledge I'm one of those real hardcore Star Wars fan. Plus good point up there, I can't wait what Disney has planned out after this acquisition.

Yeah...my brother just told me aswell. I don't like it at all! Disney should have no business with Starwars.

I'm afraid of what their going to do with the new Star Wars coming out 2015... :/

Well at least now we get to see it for ourselves. I for one am looking forward to this because Star Wars will finally be in more capable hands now. Just because it's part of Disney now doesn't mean it's going to suck. Remember when Disney bought Marvel? They didn't tamper with them at all. Let's just all be glad George is out of the way now,

"It's all over, Vader. Lucas can't hurt you anymore..."

I think its a good thing they bought it as if they didnt the star wars universe would have "died out" as i dont think Lucas would have done anything else major with it besides some games. i have a friend who hasnt seen star wars and i was completely shocked at the fact he hadnt seen it

in my opinion its going to bring more attention back to the franchise and that is a good thing as we dont want good things to die out. plus the younger generations who havn't seen it get to enjoy watching and getting into the franchise.

I just find that all of these reactions in the topic are all unfair, because you guys haven't seen the Disney versions of the sequel trilogy yet and who's to say Disney will mess them up? Like I said many times, movies like The Avengers were not screwed around by Disney's "family-friendly" policy. The movie's content was left directly up to Marvel and Marvel alone.

It could be because I'm a big Disney fan myself, but dang, there's just sooooo many haters on this topic lol. I remember back when I was like 5 or so that Disney used to be the shit amongst the youth, even teens. Now it's just like "Blegh. Disney." I mean, I guess it doesn't help that Disney has it's modern "Disney Channel" filled with stupid crap, but come on naw. :P

Okay, I have to admit that this isn't a terrible idea, but I rather have another studio take their place because, well Disney is more known for "Kiddie" stuff, not really known for really hardcore stuff, although they can throw in a few hardcore movies every few years, but their reputation is rather....spotty.

Hopefully something better than "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"... Because of that right there I lost faith in Lucas and hoped that the sequel SW movies would never be made. I don't get why all the hate towards Disney, so what if they now own something else. The Twitter quote itstartsatdusk put up sums up my thoughts exactly.

And lets face it, Disney may own the rights but it is going to be handled just like Marvel. They will still be their own separate entity, for the most part all that is going to change is who the absolute top dog is and the kind of resources they have access to.

As I've pointed out to pretty much everyone who I've talked to today...

They bought Marvel, Pixar and the Muppets and those all turned out fine. In fact, Disney seems to have made them even more beloved. When they bought Marvel everyone had a somewhat similar reaction, and now look at the Avengers. Their Muppets Movie was amazing, and Pixar only seemed to make better movies (I guess this is subjective, but Ratatouille, WALL-E, Up and Toy Story 3, and all were released one year after another, and those were all released right after Disney bought Pixar and are often considered to be their best).

Not only that, but it's not like Disney will actually be making the movie. Like the Avengers, they will probably just distribute it and put their name on it.

So what do you think that means for the future of star wars, Think they will actually get it right, or make a huge mess? Just thought I'd throw a speculation thread out there since i'm a huge fan of star wars.

Something's odd with your poll, as you can't choose FAIL. unsure.png

There's a chance something good will come of this. The main good thing is that it isn't getting dictated by a single person anymore, so more ideas and concepts are possible. However, that is also a bad thing because quality control is going to be handled by committee.

The main bad thing is that Disney is a really, really, aggressive company. Before, fans would rail against Lucas and he'd generally ignore them. Say bad things about Disney properties though, and you'll have a lawyer standing behind you within minutes. Expect to see a lot of C&D orders against all the Star Wars fansites about a month before the first new Star Wars movie hits theatres.

Yea and remember how heated it got when the sequels came out. And those WERE directed by George Lucas! I want these new movies to be good so bad, sadly I just can't see that happening right now.img-1466328-2-sad.png However if they would actually listen to fans opinions  for once instead of only thinking about profit then it COULD I repeat COULD be decent....but I think that's highly unlikely.

PS...I think i fixed the "fail" option now

Mixed reactions from me. I was pretty negative about it when the acquisition was first announced last year, but it's really not that bad. Certain misgivings aside, Disney has been known to make some pretty decent movies in recent years. The director and writer, JJ Abrams and Michael Arndt, aren't terrible, either, though they've yet to prove themselves capable of making a Star Wars movie. They've got a lot of expectations to live up to, and I feel that this next movie will shape the future of the franchise for years to come, whether for the good or the bad.

Whatever happens, of course, one thing is clear: George Lucas will never make another Star Wars movie. Buck yes.
