Big Mac's Name

Okay, I just noticed that in the mobile game "My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic" by Gameloft, Big Mac's name is spelled "Big McIntosh". This got me thinking, so I did some digging.

 

Turns out, it's not a typo. That is the way it is officially spelled.

"Big Macintosh" was originally used on early merchandise, but that is all.

"McIntosh" is even used by Lauren Faust on her DeviantART and by one of the show's writers on Twitter.

 

Personally, I don't like it, and neither does my spell-check (I hate those red lines).

 

This also screws with the pronunciation. Spelled this way, it should be said as "MIC-Intosh" not "MAC-Intosh"

This then leads to the confusion of his nickname. Why is there an "a" in the shortened version, but not in the full name?

Now, I realize that not all nicknames are spelled the same way as the original. Take my name for example.

The full thing is "Nicholas" but my nickname (lol, pun) is Nick. The spelling varies, but it is still pronounced with the same sound as the first syllable.

 

Big Mac's, however, would be a change (Mic to Mac), if it was pronounced as it should be.

 

I also realize that Mcintosh is the correct spelling for the type of apple, but still, I don't care.

 

So, I guess the point of this rant (if you could it that) was a simple question:

 

Now that you know, or if you already knew, does this annoy you like it does me?

Since I don't watch the show in subtitles, this doesn't bother me all that much. But I do agree that the spelling of his name is silly, at least to me.

For what it's worth I suggest that it not annoy you.

 

I take joy in the character Octavia. True, the name was used on a trading card, but otherwise she obviously was never referred to as such.

 

I take great joy in when my various perspectives of the show become canon, from an application of a name to the use of the party cannon as a weapon. When something is conflicting, it's no issue.

I think it's interesting, I've always had a feeling it was like that... It does annoy me a bit because it's the subtitles on TV that show it as "Macintosh" Meh

Meh. My mind is too random to prioritize things. Just tonight at dinner I thought about Laconic Phrase, string theory, dimentions, and possible conversations I might have in the near future. Yeah, having my mind can be fun.

I think it was originally "Mac", but was changed in order to avoid a lawsuit from Apple. No, I'm actually dead serious about this idea. This isn't just a rip on Apple for suing everypony, but isn't one of Apple's computers under the official, copyrighted name "MacIntosh"?

So that means all the Big Mac jokes about relating the pony to the burger are all pointless, as his name shortened will now just be "Big Mc".
