Where do You Get your Inspiration?

MelancholicMemory

Recommended Posts

So I've been thinking about how I tend to hold my emotions in, and I later use them for inspiration for my art and poetry. So my question to you is, where do you get your inspiration?

It can be inspiration for anything, whether it be art, poetry, writing, music, new ideas in the workplace, whatever. What drives you and gives you your best ideas? Are you like me and what you do is therapeutic? Does looking at other people's art or listening to good music inspire you? Do things just pop in your head? Do you have some sort of creative process when working on some new project or idea?

I mainly get inspiration from listening to music that suits a lot themes that I commonly fantasise about.

For example, I listen to mostly electronic, and whenever there's a crazy awesome, up-lifting, touching melody that I can just connect with, I tend to get visualisations in my head, fitting the song. I sometimes picture it as a little mini AMV or something, really. Then, I contemplate on that further, and put meaning to it, relate, and get ideas of what to write about, as if I'm working backwards, because you know, usually people make AMV's to show what the story is about a little bit AFTER they've seen it... I guess working backwards from something from my imagination works for me.

Vice versa, it works just as well. I will read a story with ideas of soundtracks popping into my head to help fit the mood.

What makes me actually WANT to create, though..? I honestly have no idea. I just kind of like making stuff.

I think I get my inspiration from music, I listen to music and get inspired, I play music and get inspired, sometimes I sing(Pretty badly but still.) to get inspiration.

Music is just a wonderful wonderful thing to me, and being a musician makes me appreciate it all the more.(Freshman trumpet player :D)

Whenever I try to force inspiration, I either get no ideas, or I get really bad ones. Both of which lead to frustration.

Usually, my best ideas come when I don't have anything to write them down on, which I hate. Often I'll just start writing or whatever, and I'll just get great ideas and build off of them. I try not to say "I'm gonna make the greatest thing ever!", because that never ends well.

I'm a bit of a great idea thinker, I usaully think of ideas that are rediculous, and I believe the best way I get that idea is through a goal and a step by step process to hit that goal.

When DJing, I get my inspiration and what not from some of the best DJs and producers, usually looking for something to get my imagination hyped up so I can think in a overdrive mode I like to call it because of how fast I think and when I do this I think of all the outcomes and steps of what I'm trying to do, usually thinking of a different outcome every 2 seconds, of course it's my decision to chose the right steps and outcome.

Inspiration for me comes in many different ways. Sometimes I get it from walking around and seeing something that strikes something in me, others come from conversations with people. Most weirdly turn up at night out of the blue.

I know this is going to sound lame, but I get inspiration from anywhere I can, whether it be in a game, from a tv show. It mostly comes from the characters in that particular game or tv show. I think as of late the one I am drawing a lot of inspiration from is Derpy Hooves. as odd as that sounds. There is something special about that grey mare.

History, plain and simple. Whenever I learn about some historical event or person that fascinates me is when I get my biggest surges of inspiration, and I try and spin that person or event so that it fits in with whatever writing project I'm working on. When you base your fantasy or science fictions writings on actual historical events that fascinate you not only does the writing come easier, but you write with more confidence because you know that something similiar really did happen. Music, video, games, and movies all of course have their place of course, in particular I find watching fan made music videos to be particuarlly effective.

Can be anything. I made a

, because I the song came up on my ipod while thinking about ponies. Mostly it's just my mind going through "what if" scenarios and imagining, how certain characters wold react in certain situations.

anything, and everything.

though, if i'm hurting for ideas and need inspiration, a good long hike always works for me.  i live in a huge city so i like to explore it.  i could probably spend my whole life wandering this city and not see all of it.

When I am looking for music inspiration like when I want to write dubstep or electronic music I listen to MLP fan songs  ^_^

When I am looking for Fire Spinning Inspiration I usually listen to songs like this.

When I am looking for musical instrument inspiration... I think this one is obvious... Listen to classical music and such.

When I am looking for art inspiration... Pony art. Any drawings of MLP and stuff makes me want to draw.

And that is how Equestria was made

It seems we use the same music type for fire spinning :) You may want to check out Hidden Orchestra for it too :D

For me 70% of the time inspiration comes from my dreams. I have a little notepad right next to my bed to write the details of my dreams to remember them later.  The rest comes from nature + experiences + the work of others. Regardless intention, origin or "domain" When I take a look I try to imagine how the creator and "participants" felt when doing whatever it is I’m enjoying.

For me I would say anything really, mostly my subconscious just spits out what its been working on in the from of a full story from beginning to end or I get an action sequence from a song I am listening to. Or I get frustrated at how the hero I am reading about is having so much trouble with the villain so I make a Hero who can. Well that what happens most of the time in my head, pleas be careful if you visit because it can be very dangerous in my head.

My true inspiration would be driving (lolwut)

When I'm on the well, everything is prepared, the destination is set, and I'm all alone, I can simply 'zone out' and let the conscious me do the driving, while the rest of me can go wild with mind images and sounds. Music sometimes works, but what really gives me freedom is driving alone (music is optional)

Well, my "main" creative work is a fantasy realm which is the setting of a series of books I am in the process of writing, but I couldn't tell you where the inspiration comes from. I just plan the overarching story and characters, then the chapter and then I let the characters unfold themsevles along certain railroads.

I like to do requests. Please, if there is something you want to see me, an amateur, draw for you, just send me a PM with the details and I'll say yay or nay. Most likely yay.

Weirdly enough, I get a lot of inspiration for writing, art etc from dreams. I've often had a dream which, on waking, I've had to write down quickly so I can evolve it into a story perhaps, or a picture, or even an RP character or plot. I do dream very vividly and also in colour.

I get my inspiration from music, and artwork. I've recently started playing bass, 2 years ago, well not that recent but you get it. Also, I've been making comics since I was 6, and I still like making comics.

When it comes to art, I usually just take suggestions or requests from people.

For example at another forum, there are different staff groups. One of them being, "Graphics Crew" which I happen to be in. People just request sigs or drawings and I do that.

As for poetry, I usually lie down for a while and think. I think about intelligent people and objects that could symbolize many things such as personalities or people. All you have to do is think some more so you can organize this into a sort of poem.

I'm currently writing a MLP fanfic which is about half done, and a lot of the inspiration for the fanfic comes from an RP that I was in. I also watch the episodes to get ideas about what to put into the chapters. It's mostly OCs but has the Mane Six in it as well as Celestia, Luna and changelings... plus a totally new baddie which I came up with after a dream. XD One day, I might post it here.
