Autistic brony insult?

.....

Recommended Posts

I can understand some people not liking Bronies because they find  many of us annoying (I've seen some cases where I could see the rush of pony avatars and memes being a little too much) but calling people mentally deficient in some way is unfair to say the least.

Oh no....4chan doesn't like something...and they act like jackasses about it...

 Shocked...absolutely shocked.

Everyone who is upset at this, please don't be.

These people are working very hard to ensure that bronies aren't associated as the same type of people as those on 4chan.

They are doing us a favor!

I bet at the the end of the day more people dislike and disdain 4chan and its hobbits than bronies so yeah, all any attack they can do is to ensure everyone that we aren't them or like them is a huge PR boon for us.

While it is unfortunate that the mural was damaged, all it does in the long run is show how dysfunctional 4chaners are while giving our community one more rallying point.

Though whoever did that should be careful signing petty stupidity 'Anon' that  tends to blow up in one's face. Especially when it leads people like the author of that article to comment on how conformist and anti-individual such an act makes the acting party.

I blame media, and all these politicly correct morons. They have to lable EVERYTHING, to justify their own pathetic existance, and think they made some stupid difference in the world.

Yup, they can hate all they want but we bronies are not going anywhere anytime soon.

People who are not like other people scares people. If you see a woman with beard, you'd probably not go forward and instantly talk to the person, you'd keep your distance because its not normal, but that person is no different than you and me.

It is weird that grown men likes ponies, but for gods sake, could they leave us alone? Why are the "normal" people so interested in our lives?

I don't mean to sound insensitive or anything, but what does "highest level of autism" even mean? Lets argue some semantics, shall we? As someone with an autistic sibling, I know that autism actually does have "levels," but usually, when you say "high" in reference to autism, it means "high-functioning" (like Asperger's Syndrome). So does this insult mean that Bronies = the highest functioning form of autism? Or did they mean that Bronies = the worst kind of autism (a.k.a: low-functioning autism)?

Doesn't sound like a very well-thought out jab to me. Learn to insult people better next time, guys!

You and I know that it is inaccurate but to the trolls they don't really care, their aim is to take a negative stereotype about Autism being strange narrow/obsessive and sometimes socially stigmatizing interests and apply it to people who may or may not be on the Autism spectrum but enjoy a harmless cartoon because they are a bunch of immature trolls trying to bait people. What pisses me off about this whole thing is even though it is baiting I had no choice but to respond to it because of all the misconceptions people have about Autism. During most of my life especially early childhood it was obvious that I had Autism but I advanced to the point where most people can't tell yet I still sometimes misinterpret certain social cues which leads to some misunderstandings mostly at work. Most people don't know that there are "levels of Autism", they either think of the kid throwing multiple tantrums a day or the one who has poor social skills but has a savant skill like in the movie Rainman or in some cases the basement dwelling overgrown manchild who these jackasses are trying to depict bronies as. I don't think most of these people actually believe all bronies are Autistic but are still stupid and immature enough to use that of all things as an insult without any thought whatsoever as to the consequences of actually doing that.

It is really funny though.

And let's be honest it's an improvement over the perojative term 'fag' that used to be the insult

of the internet.

I'd call it progress, just take it as is a joke. Learn to make fun of yourself otherwise people

will target you for not being able to take a joke.

"Most people will almost instantly correlate the word “autistic” to social retardation, and therein lies the true discord."

As sad and pissed off I was about this, I couldn't help but crack up.

I truly couldn't tell if the person was using the word because it's in their vocabulary, or because it was a reference.

Sorry.

:muffins:

Anyway.

I don't understand people anymore. I just don't. I avoid people who would do stuff like that, and go on about my day. I mean, what can we do? Honestly, they should just paint over it and put the mural back up. Best form of defiance there is.

Okay, so I don't usually care about haters, but there is one insult in particular that irks me: being called autistic.

Y'see, I have a mild form of aspergers; which itself is a mild form of autism. So you can see that when a condition I have is used as an insult, I get ticked.

Aspergers is lifelong. There is no cure for it, you have to live with it all of your life... Those sickos who make fun of it...

What's your opinion?

This is exactly my opinion on this matter. As I mentioned in Saberspark's Ponies and Critics: Round 2 video, people who use that excuse don't even know what Autism and Asperger's is.
As someone who has Asperger's Syndrome, a form of Autism, I get pissed when it's used as another word to mean "stupid."
If anyone thinks Autism means "stupid," go get your head examined, and I will instantly hate you if you use it as an insult.

In their defense, they probably don't know any better. I thought that too until I realized that there's a good chance *I* could actually be autistic and I started doing research on the subject.

Yeah, it is offensive. But they're just uneducated. They don't know.

I could throw my two bits in about insults, but I don't want this to be a rage thread. Ignore them. They're stupid, caring about them is wasting precious time.

The purpose for most of these "autistic insults" is simply to troll us and don't mean anything beyond that, though it certainly wouldn't surprise me if there were people who actually did believe the crap that came out of their mouths. It is still highly innapropriate and a dick move regardless of whether they mean it or are just trolling. I have had to deal with a lot of challenges over the year being on the Autism spectrum and still do and I want the next generation to go forward and things like this are an obstacle to further progress.

Because the internet is a breeding ground for stupidity and despite how wonderful it can be for fan communities and bring people together it's also a really nice "playground" for people that are so insecure they have to feed off the false sense of superiority that comes from putting others down for petty reasons.

Those are two completely different things, I don't get how some moron could link the two things together.

In fact, it is so stupid to have that as an insult that I feel PITY for the stupidity of some people. I mean, don't you know that Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton had autism? Well now you know.

Autism doesn't make anyone any better or worse than another. So using this insult is just as bad as using "gay."

So yeah, calling someone autistic, in my eyes, make you look like a complete idiot.

Not that there's anything wrong with this thread having gone on so long, but I think that the original question was answered correctly on the first page of replies: 4chan. It's very likely that that is where the idea that bronies are "autistic" originated from. They use the term "autistic" to refer to people who act really obsessed with something. Or even if someone's just a little bit obsessed with something, they will be called "autistic." They consider the brony fandom to be one of the most "autistic" fandoms. It's not that they actually sincerely believe that all bronies have actual autism. It's just a slang term they use. Just like how they call each other "faggots" regardless of whether someone is gay or not (since almost everyone posts anonymously, it's impossible to even tell someone's gender unless they state it). They're not being homophobic when they say that, it's just their way of speaking to each other.

So if someone calls you, or the brony fandom, autistic, don't worry about it. Don't take it personally. It's because the person saying it can't comprehend how someone could act so passionately and care so much about a certain thing, especially a thing like My Little Pony, possibly because they themselves would rather act cold and indifferently towards everything. It's just a lack of understanding, that's all.
