The Brony Documentary Discussion

My apologies if there is already a topic about this. If there is, please either delete or merge.

The Documentary, "Bronies, the Extremely unexpected adult fans of My Little Pony" was released today to those who donated. What does everypony think? This is for people who have seen the documentary, so if you haven't and wish to continue, prepare for spoilers.

Personally, I loved it. Well worth the wait. It really got to the heart of what Bronydom is all about. The animations were great, and it was cool to see cast members and fandom celebrities in it. I loved the animations. I'm going to have to show this to my family.

It was pretty cool how they started with peoples negative reactions and misconceptions, then led to explaining what we really are. They had a good variety of people they interviewed, from average fans to celebrities, artists, and cast. I think they had a good representation of what the fandom is.

Also, it was pretty cool seeing my name in the credits.

Which one are you talking about? The trailer, or the actual hour and a half documentary?

Here is a headline from Equestria Daily today.

That's a different documentary.

With that said, just got it off Scrnland and I'm watching it now.

And with that said, it's giving me a bittersweet feeling. On one hoof it is inspiring to see how we grew into the amazing community we are now, but at the same time I feel a bit sad that I don't have any skills that would allow me to give back to the fandom. I'm not creative, and I've never invested much time in right-brained activities, but now suddenly I feel like I'm less of a brony for not being able to give back in an artistic capacity. In two months this community has given me so much, but I have so little to give back in gratitude.

It's weird, I've been in fandoms before, and I've been happy to sit on the sidelines while others made stuff, but never before have I had such an urge to be in the thick of the fan work creation before. It's not a sense of jealousy, either. I would want to pave my own creative way, I just don't know how.

But I'm inspired. I've got a sketchbook full of ponies and a computer full of vectors. Plus, I just laid down $60 for a Kansas Acoustic Guitar. I would have never done these things if it weren't for this amazing community, and for that, I am eternally grateful. :)

With every passing moment of this documentary I am reminded why I love this community so much. :)

I haven't seen this yet, and unfortunately I don't know when I'd be able to get it. It looks very interesting, though. Judging by some of the replies so far it sounds pretty cool.

No clue when it will show up on Netflix, but when it does, I'm showing it to all of my family. Sorry to those who haven't gotten the chance to see it yet, but John de Lancie asked us not to post it online yet. Then again, I'm sure someone will probably post it anyway, so be patient.

After I saw the video for the John de Lancie panel at one of the cons, I knew that when this documentary released, I would obtain it.  I expected it to be one Youtube, but then I saw John's comment to not put it on Youtube.  I respected his wishes and bought it, and literally just finished watching it.  I loved it.  It just...  Awesome.  It radiated awesome.

I must say, probably my favorite parts were the animation segments.  I was laughing like an idiot throughout them.

WARNING: Joke spoiler ahead.

...and the clopping!

...

Um, let's not talk about that...

I enjoyed seeing fellow bronies from different countries. The ones shown were interesting and I liked following their stories. I think Daniel did a truly heroic action by arranging a journey to a people event and following through. Overcoming mental inhibitions (such as doubt or inability to easily talk to others) to accomplish an objective you know you want to do is something I see as very important in being an individual of reason.

The new music was entertaining. I really liked Tara Strong's song in the credits.

There is a chance Lyle's dad may be seen as an antagonist even though the documentary maintained a good balance and understanding of views.

The additional scenes of the conventions were interesting. There were many highlight moments such as the line about writers going down with their ships  ^_^

I would not have included Dr Redden's comment about bronies being a reaction and retreat from post 9/11 worry. It is a very easy explanation so it may be the only thing that gets people to supposedly understand, but in my case at least it is not a retreat from anything. It is an advancing step made of my own free will. I know that if I had not have had the open mind I had during the first viewing I would not have continued life in the same way I have. Her stance seems to portray rightly or wrongly that bronies are incapable of facing reality and discredits the genuineness of their values.

I just noticed Gummy is in a snowman in the background.

Edit: Also really liked the animations especially Faust's bedroom one. Overall I think the documentary is excellent.

I watched the documentary last night.  Holy crap it was amazing.  I really enjoyed watching it, and will probably watch it again and again and again.  I felt it really captured the essecne of what Bronies are about.  The animated sequences with a certain someone singing nearly made my head explode from the awesomeness... along with laughing hysterically.

I cannot wait to get the blu ray discs next month, totally worth every last penny I gave to that kickstarter. ^_^

I haven't watched it yet to form a complete opinion(It's sitting on my HDD though), but I can see that a little bit, alot of us were kid in a time before all that, and have lingering memories of before all that pain and chaos, and the nostalgia of having a Saturday morning cartoon again, or even opening trading cards, speaks to those memories.

I don't doubt it may be true for some people and I don't have an issue with it either. From a skeptic's point of view, a psychologist's opinion is stronger than most of the people in the show (I don't believe that is necessarily true, but you can see how it could be for others). Upon hearing her, they go 'aha! That is the reason!' It would confirm a skeptic's belief or inclination that bronies are different because they can't handle the ""real world"" (double quotation marks) which adds to the believability (but not credibility) of her opinion.

The point is, I'm pretty sure most people don't think clearly. The job of the documentary is to present a balanced foray into brony society. Someone might think, 'well, that may be true, or it may not. All I know is that it is not the case for me and therefore possible it is not the case for everyone'. But someone who does not think clearly, who is not aware of his biases, may take Dr Redden's opinion as fact merely because it agrees with his gut feeling.

It is not the fault of the documentary if some things are taken the wrong way by the audience. I think I would err on the side of caution and not include those few lines from her as they are prone to misinterpretation. That is only if I was the director; I don't want to make a big issue out of it.

I'm finally watching it now, I'm at the point where John comes on, I'm enjoying it so far, but I have one little nitpick.

The way the one keeps using Redneck the way he does, now I know they probably wouldn't have gotten away with using the words "white trash", but it would have been a better term for those kinda of people, I'm kinda a redneck(to a degree, I live in Iowa) myself, so it's grating to hear him identify morons that way.

Finished watching the documentary, aside from the small nitpick I mentioned, I really liked it, It made me feel really good for some reason, and the animated bits were hilarious.

I was finally able to watch it this morning and I must say that it was quite good. The animated bits were easily one some of the best parts of the documentary but the whole thing was just as good. Always good to see productions like this come to fruition.

I live in a very small town in the Florida Panhandle ("Lower Alabama"). Our Walmart is the local meet up spot, so I can totally relate.

Actually, I can kind of agree with her a little. She got it wrong that we can't handle reality, but I think that it is a relief from the negativity of the world. However, It's not an escape. It is more of an active attempt to deny what is wrong with today's world and share kindness and tolerance with those around you. But she did try to explain it away, and in doing so, make us out to be outcasts.

I downloaded both the 1080p and the 720p versions. The 1080p for my computer, the 720 for my iPod.

There's only a few words I can describe or say after seeing the documentary:

"Sniffles"  :( "Wipes away tears"

It's....it's....it's so well made!

I was originally going to watch it tonight on my new Panasonic HDD recorder and Smart VIERA television, but I instead loaded the 1080p version on my Samsung Galaxy S III and watched it while waiting for the bus and on my lunch break at work. I was feeling a bit overwhelmed (and teary eyed in my office) after watching the documentary and overall I enjoyed it and it really conveyed the message on the how the fandom came to be.

The animated sequences were also a great addition and really told the story well.

There were also a few segments that I could relate to, including the Aspergers part which in turn actually reflected in my own experiences becoming a brony and also having to deal with large crowds and noise.

It is definitely worth the money if you haven't yet purchased a copy, but make sure you have a box of tissues handy if you get a bit emotional. A great production all round.

Finally watched the whole thing just a few minutes ago.  It was very well made and it makes me even happier to see how my fellow bronies react to one another.  I've been to conventions before, but I have yet to go to a brony one.  This documentary really makes me want to go to one even more.

I loved the little animation portions, and the song that went along with them was good too.  I like watching the different bronies making their way to their conventions, and I feel bad for those who were lonely, and for all the bronies who still do.

Watching the part with Lauren Faust at Brony-Con brought a smile to my a big smile to my face.  It was the most emotional moment in the whole thing IMO.  I hope to see her at a future convetion one day, and even though she's not working on the show, I believe we all agree that she's is always welcome to every brony convention around the world.

I'm still on the fence about showing this to my family, but hopefully this will help them understand why I'm brony better, and my brother loves the show anyway so he'll watch it.

All I've seen so far is this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OV-OF9wZWDs

The animation is fantastic, and I love how they went the extra mile to add animation to the documentary. Haven't watched the whole documentary, but this definitely makes me interested to watch more. (Netflix, hopefully?) I love the little "eye surprise" at the end with the John de Lancie pony.

However, the documentary made one factual flaw in this scene: My Little Pony Tales is late G1, and not G2. G2 never had its own animated series.

Other than that, it seems like this documentary is about things we already know. The information seems more meant for outsiders, or am I interpreting it wrong? (Then again, of course bronies would already be familiar about most aspects of bronies. ;P)

Photo Finish,that's her name.

Makin' every-pony pretty is her number one game.

She do what she do, to make you more than you.

No-pony gonna care if what we share is true.

Cause lies are beautiful, the truth is not.

Come on little mare, you better shake that plot.

You know that's what they really all came to see.

I very much enjoyed the documentary and will dentally be showing it to my father as was my plan all along. he likes these kinds of films so it would perfect for him to understand the fandom then me trying to explain it to him and him getting the wrong idea.

I agree it would have been nice for them to go into more detail about what the staff from the show thought about it all but then that would have probably taken the focus away from the main thing being about the people themselves and the experiences they have had.

The main focus of the doc was to inform people that didn't know much about the fandom so for us who are a par of it it serves as a reminder that all the good it's doing as the good is often overshadowed by the bad depending on where on the internet you visit.

All in all you should buy it to support the creators as they need to get paid somehow. They have said they haven't been paid yet and are expecting the return from the release to cover the costs they have paid. $13 might be a bit much but they need to make money somehow if their ever to make another documentary about anything. This is basically a job for them and they need the money to survive.

Oh, and here is a link to the website where you can buy the film.

Just wondering. What would you classify yourself as, everyone? Hipster? Moderate? Creative? I'm definitely a moderate. My interest was piqued by others on the internet (BO emblems, other forums with MLP threads, etc), it just took me a while to bite (in fact, my first episode I ever saw was "Too Many Pinkie Pies").

What about you guys?

I very much enjoyed this documentary. It definitely makes me want to attend the next Bronycon (Though I may lack the funds :(

As for what kind of Brony I am, I would say creative. I love making fanart, and have recently started writing fanfiction.
