I actually think that they didn't keep it a secret on purpose. The writers must have expected some kind of negative response.

I don't know... It was hinted at in the season 3 premiere, plus there's also the fact that Twilight's element has always been a crown. It's not entirely out of the blue. (Though why Equestria got on fine with just 1 Princess for centuries and now suddenly requires 4 is something else entirely. Unless, of course, Celestia dies at the end of the series and Twilight takes her place, something that I'd hate even more than Twilicorn)

 

Saying that, I still don't like the change and probably never will. Oh well.

It would defenetly have a "What just happened?" moment to me. I was skeptical to the idea at the start and it took me some guts to give it a chance. With the transformation being a secret I think I would be more negative to it.

     If it had never been leaked that Twilight becomes an alicorn, would you still have objected to it?

People were annoyed because they were told something that was a big stretch from what they were used too, and change makes people uncomfortable.

 

Truthfully they could have handled the last episode better, possibly by making it a two part episode, but other then that it was a fine thing indeed to happen to Twilight.

Okay, the leak didn't make sense at all. Once a surprise is leaked, it ruins it for everyone. Because once one person finds out about it, they tend to spread the word and cannot keep it to themselves.

Remember how they withhold Chrysalis? I think she's best villain, and honestly, if they told me beforehoof i'd be squeeing all over the place and still think she's best villain.

Well what I think of Twilicorn is that she looks fabulous as an alicorn. At first when I watched episode 13 I was like what happened to Twilight? I'm like wtf?! And when the princess was doing that thing to her I was like OMG! What is happening to Twilight?! And when she opened her wings I was like oh  my  god OMG! She's a princess! Can't wait for season 4! Let me say this; I didn't like the final episode, not because of Twilicorn, but because of the fact that it was rushed and crammed into one episode when it should have been at least 2. I don't think hearing of it later would have changed anything although I don't really know.

It would have been a good twist ending I admit, but thae reason people responded so negatively, or at least in my eyes, is because they thought it would change the character. Even though the characters have been changing constantly through out the series. People don't like change, or in this case big change.

All things considered, it was foreshadowed pretty well by events in the show anyway. We had threads for speculating whether she'd become one and giving opinions on the matter long before the finale anyway. They weren't particularly subtle about the "One pony will discover her true destiny" shtick. I think that people would've been pissed at first anyway, but most would have gradually grown to accept it as they now have. The only real difference might have been the timing of the backlash.

Yeah probably, because honestly at first I didn't like the idea, but I've got time to process it and I'm atleast more accepting and neutral about the idea, if it just happened I'd probably be shocked and alot more opposed to it until i calmed down.

Same for me. I was pretty shocked when I first heard about Twilicorn, but I had calmed down by the time the episode aired. I think it was pretty healthy for the fandom to have been introed Twilicorn before the episode aired so that we could warm up to the idea or gain a "wait and see" attitude before the big bombshell finally dropped on us and Twilicorn became officially a thing.

I would have liked it for a time. That time would have ended as soon as Season 4 was confirmed. After that, I'd likely be even worse than I was. A thought like that truly scares me...

 

No. My opinion wouldn't have shifted to the other side. If anything, it would have gone farther in the direction I took. Which is kinda hard to imagine. 

 

Hate it under the current circumstances, hate it under these hypothetical circumstances.
