besides trying to convince me is pointless, this vote was cast yesterday

We were not trying to convince you to vote for Applejack, but rather trying to counter your claims that Applejack is "simple" and the fact that she apparently "betrayed" her family and is a filler space in the show. Not to mention the fact that Twilight is superior to Applejack. No, sir. Twilight Sparkle is the main character, yes. The other five ponies are main characters, but one step behind Twilight--however, it does not mean that their personalities are any less complex or interesting than Twilight's. 

 

 

gonna say something here, and it's one of the, if not THE, biggest gripe i have with this fandom; headcannon does NOT count. show me evidence of deeper complexity from the show, not someone's headcannon.

Stellafera's idea includes little to no headcanon--except Lauren Faust's and something that's heavily implied in the show (and confirmed, pretty much).

To be fair, a lot of my ideas about Applejack's past are headcanon, but I think Applejack and Twilight Sparkle share so many character traits (especially flaws) that they are about equally complex. It's just that Twilight's fear of disappointing others, for example, is much more upfront and less hidden than Applejack's. Applejack usually maintains an outward appearance of being totally OK. We all know from Applebuck Season and The Last Roundup that that is not necessarily true.

 

There's nothing wrong with liking Twilight Sparkle more. I didn't bring up the book to discredit Twilight; I brought it up to also credit Applejack. I'm sorry if it came across in my posts like I was degrading Twilight. It's just that the behavior of Twilight there would not be surprising for her character type, whereas it would for Applejack, so therefore it was relevant.

Well, if Applejack pulls off an upset on Twilight then she will square off with Rainbow at Coltlanta. MLP Forums March Madness © will be the best tournament to date for March.

I never said that I thought you calling Applejack "simple" means that she's dumb or uneducated. I said in my post that Applejack may be one of the most complex characters. I never even thought of that before Stella's idea. Applejack's quite different from having a normal stereotypical personality that's extremely flat and boring.

Ah, we'll see. After you read her post, that is. It actually has plenty of cannon backing, where we can shoot it...yeah, never mind. It has a lot of canon backing, too.

Understandable, understandable. Applejack is about a whole lot ahead of Rarity, who's my second favorite.

I'm going to vote for Discord. I like both characters, and don't really mind whichever of them wins, but I've enjoyed the scenes from the show with Discord's antics in it far more than I've enjoyed Luna's. He's pretty much the draconequus embodiment of a master troll, and I find all of his scenes enjoyable, more so than any of Luna's.

 Simple? Puh-lease. @Stellafera here has an especially complex idea of how Applejack is anything but simple. People just can't (or won't) find the time to properly go deeper into her personality. 

That is the genius in Applejacks character is that she seems like a simple character but if you look deep enough you will see one of the deepest most intriguing characters in the show. She is not as hyper as Pinkie Pie, as overly dramatic or vain as Rarity, as shy as Fluttershy, as cocky or brash as Rainbow Dash or have the OCD like tendencies of Twilight but she dosen't even need to.

 

As much as I was hoping AJ would win if it was anypony that beat her I am glad it was Twilight, she is also a really great character for her own reasons. But we can at least say that we put up quite a good fight, we may not have as many fans as Twilight but we make up for it with loyalty and dedication. Congratulations Twilight fans, I will be joining your team once she goes up against Rainbow Dash. For this round I will be backing Discord as he has the unique distinction of being the first character I liked (I watched the Return of Harmony two parter first) though Applejack didn't come much longer after him.

I am not going to lie, that was a tough choice for me Luna is actually tied with both Applejack and Twilight for my favorite pony but my favorite character overall is Discord. The only reason why Applejack was such an easy choice for me in the last round is because she is so underrated it is not even funny, if not for that I might have literally had to flip a coin to make my decision.

No worries, though. Twilight has been knocked off her perch in the past. It can easily happen again.

 

I must surprise myself again and go with Discord over Princess Luna. He wasn't my favorite villain, but alarmingly, his character has been developed better than Luna's and he's left a much deeper impression on the show. Luna is a character full of potential, but very little of it has ever been explored.

Twilight beat Applejack huh? Well that's fine, I honestly think she has a better chance against Rainbow Dash, but I would have been cool with either winning.

Well, there is one good thing to come out of Applejack's sad loss:

 

I won't have to chose between my favorite and second favorite pony anymore in the final four. I hope for Rainbow Dash to mercilessly pummel Twilight Sparkle and fly to first place.

Gosh dang it, so sad that Applejack didn't win.   Was really rooting for her last round!  And now I'm confronted with an extraordinarily difficult choice!  The Lord of Chaos and All Things Nonsensical vs. the Princess of the Night (and my own personal Best Princess).  *sigh* Tough choice, tough choice; I probably like Luna's design and character a lot more than Discord's, just because I think that she's a bit more complex than he is, at least as far as motivations are concerned, but Discord is the King of Trolls, probably the only bigger troll on the show than Celestia (I'm dead serious about that ), hilariously ridiculous and farcical in every sense of the word, and probably the most original, memorable, and just downright funniest villain of the show.  Extremely tough choice, buttttt... my vote goes to Discord.  He also stands a better chance of overthrowing Pinkie in the Final Four, and not gonna lie, it would be extraordinarily epic to see the two most nonsensical characters on the show clash in the Final Four.  GO DISCORD!!!!!!!!!!   

 

Vote Discord everypony, he has a PhD in Swagometry!

This is a very quiet arena, following that jumpshot by Applejack to give herself a 41-39 lead. Twilight just called her final timeout with one second to play in this second half.

 

Now what you want to do, Pony Joe, is put all kinds of pressure on the ball, and force Twilight to have to catch the ball going away from the basket, catch, and fire a very difficult shot. She might try some kind of lob to the basket and you gotta be prepared to switch, so she can't get anything. You want everything going back towards halfcourt. 

 

Twilight's magic will throw in. AJ, playing off the ball... AJ... gets it to Twilight, for three for the win!... YES!!! TWILIGHT SPARKLE, AT THE BUZZER! AS TEAM SPARKLE HAVE PULLED IT OFF TO ADVANCE TO THE FINAL FOUR AND WHAT A MIRACULOUS SHOT BY SPARKLE!

 

Twilight Sparkle off the inbounds, that's her first three pointer of the night! How about this as a follow-up to the clutch shot by Applejack? And team Sparkle, after being down 10, are indeed fortunate to come away with an incredible victory!
