Possible disabled pony episode on the way!

Why is Patrick Star ok? Why is the dumb Ed from Ed, Ed, and Eddy ok? Derpy was banned because of trolls! They had nothing to do but moan and complain about a beloved character.

 

But great answer by the way. I do hope they make the episode about Derpy! 

 

Personally, I think it has to do with the fact that Derpy is a female. Double standards much?

 

Anyway, Meghan never said we were getting an episode about disabilities. She only confirmed that she knew IF one was on the way or not. People on Twitter need to know how to word their questions better.

 

But, if we do get an episode, I hope it's about Scootaloo, and not Derpy. Derpy's role is as a background character, and I prefer her to stay that way. Scootaloo is a semi-main character, so she should be the one to get the focus. Then again, it could always be about some random character of the day, and I'd be okay with that if it's well-executed.

Sounds like it would be a good episode. I agree that we'd probably see Scootaloo in it, although Derpy would be great. I know she's not a canon character, but I thought of Snowdrop right away after noticing this thread.

The obvious answer is that yes indeed there will be an episode about disabilities. The question is, "what disability?" It might be a physical disability caused by a serious injury, like what happened in that Arthur episode where Brain has to learn wheelchair basketball with a girl on a wheelchair, or it could be a mental disability (much riskier) that could involve Derpy. I'd say they will play it safe and go with a physical disability, but you'll never know...

I'd like to see a pony with a speech impediment. He/she ends up being very clever, and the other ponies learn to to give him/her time to get all the words out, once they get more familiar with the disability.

 

One of the character's quirks could be that they say "body" instead of "pony". Applejack in response: "You mean everypo - aw heck, we knew what ya meant."

Well, provided Meghan isn't taking advantage of the wording of the question (Writers are like genies, you have to be very specific, or you're toast) I'd be excited to see this. It seems to be a step up from anything they've directly confronted, so that interests me. I think the probability of it being Derpy is very low, which leaves Scoots or a new character. 

 

I hope that it is about Scootaloo, mainly because it would add an extra dimension to her character. Bonus points if Rainbow helps her deal with it in some way.

Well, this is certainly an exciting bit of news.  If this turns out to be true, then I can't wait to see this episode next season.  I've been a big advocate myself for a long while now for MLP having at least one episode that revolves around disabilities and overcoming them, especially considering it was an important part of Lauren's original vision for the show at some point down the road.  Obviously I'd love it if it revolved around Derpy (even though in my head canon she's not really disabled), just because it'd be amazing having a Derpy episode, but that's also kind of unlikely, so I'd be just as happy if it involved Scootaloo not being able to fly and learning to cope with it (and right now my money's on the episode most likely revolving around Scoots).  Still, it could involve the introduction of an entirely new character to the show for all we know, which probably would be just as good as the aforementioned scenarios if handled correctly.  Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Personally, I would feel uncomfortable if there was an entire episode centered on Derpy, because I only love episodes focused on the Mane Six or the CMC, and I don't think I'd enjoy one about a background character. It just wouldn't work.

That's just my opinion though, I know loads of people love Derpy. Don't get me wrong, I adore Derpy! I just think she's better as a cute little background pony. But I would like her to have some more speech!

 

As for the Scootaloo thing, an episode about her not being able to fly could be interesting, and maybe Dashie's sisterly relationship with her can be involved!

It won't be Derpy. Remember how the soccer moms freaked out at the mention of her very name? While it would be very nice, and I would absolutely love seeing how she copes, it's just plain not going to happen. However, I think that pursuing the Scootaloo being unable to fly would be an excellent door for character development and demonstrating her new relationship with Rainbow Dash.

It most likely will be Scootaloo's lack of flight ability. It is a great idea for an episode, and definitely would have to include Rainbow Dash in some form. Scootaloo already looks up to Dashie, and they have developed a sisterly bond over Season 3, it would only be logical to continue this into Season 4.

 

I'd actually like to see Scootaloo not be able to fly, as I think it would open up so many more possibilities storywise, and would also help to further develop her character, as well as RD's.

 

Derpy is too controversial in my eyes to use. That, and it would just feel weird to see her have her own episode. I mean don't get me wrong, I'd love to see her more in Season 4, but her role as a background character with a couple of little scenes here and there would satisfy my Derpy needs. Oh and add maybe one extended scene where her original voice appears. And muffins, definitely muffins

anyway, i'd like an episode with Derpy on her day-by-day or leading with her difficulties to talk with other ponies, but i want more Derpy in my life so...  i will be satisfied with whatever that comes. xDDD

I disagree her eyes are considered a disability. Wall eyed or cross-eyed is a legitimist disability. Furthermore I don't think anyone considers Derpy to be a background pony anymore. She is just as much a part of the Main 6 as any other pony IMO

I love Derp as much as the next person but I disagree she's like the mane six. She's a background pony that's had there, maybe four lines altogether.

I would actually like for scootaloo to not be able to fly. That's why she kind of "flies" on her scooter. what I would love even more is a blind pony like snowdrop!

This is actually an excellent idea. It delves further into the topic of becoming more acceptable of others around you. I have a feeling this episode would be pumped with feels and a *Dash* of bitter-sweet moments. I would be heartbroken if it was about Scootaloo not being able to fly...the poor filly wants to be just like Rainbow Dash for crying out loud! Now if it was a Derpy episode....oho! Well the reason some (stupid) people were angry with Derpy was due to her name and her disability, despite the fact that she is much loved by pretty much everypony...

 

So if they really do create a pony with a disability and focus on him/her in an episode ,hopefully it won't get shot down by some idiots out there who think it's offensive to even talk about a persons Disability, EVEN though they always handle it in a correct way...

 

So I do hope to see an episode featuring Derpy or another disabled pony...

 

Some people think that Scootaloo may be featured because of a long standing belief that her wings are actually undeveloped meaning she wont ever be able to fly. This would mean she would need Rainbow Dash to really step up as a sister figure to help her through the tough time she will have learning she may not be able to fly...it could become one of the best episodes in the series no doubt... If handled right...

 

Thats IF Scootaloo does indeed have this issue and if she is featured in the episode IF the episode even exists...

I definitely would enjoy some more episodes that deal with more serious tones once in awhile.

Especially something like this since it's a good lesson for the younger audience.

I'm going to figure it'll be a episode about a Pegasus who can't fly since that seems like the easiest route to go and still get a message across. After that though i would hope they do one about orphans. Since from everything I know scootaloo could be worked into that episode unless they want to show us something else.

If we're talking about Scoots and Derpy being the only stick out possibilities, it's ten times more likely to be Scoots than Derpy, and I hope everyone knows that xP Even if Derpy isn't phased out of the show by the time S4 is in full swing, she's still a BG pony, and an entire episode plot centering on her seems unlikely.   *slain by all Derpy fans :c*   Honestly, any more episodes that have even a minor chance of being about Scoots excites me, because it has potential for her and Dash's new found relationship since Sleepless in Ponyville to be expanded upon. Dash was shown aiding Scoots in flying at the very end of said episode. It'd be neat if Dash and Scoots worked to find a solution for Scoots to fly, or do something similar to flying, to get around her handicap.

I'm a huge Derpy fan, but I actually agree that it's not likely the episode will be about her. In the context of this, I'd rather this idea be a Scootaloo episode. I just really think it's a good idea.
However, I still wish they'd make a Derpy episode >u<

I would kill for them to make Snowdrop canon (if they get permission from SillyFilly). Maybe Celestia and Luna can tell the story to the mane 6 and Spike. Then maybe at the end of the ep Snowdrop's spirit visits Luna and they have a proper farewell. I know it might be too late for season 4 but maybe season 5 could do this.

I think it would be odd to bring up Scootaloo's wing problem so late in the game , in the beginning like season 1 or 2 it would have made sense but realistically the issue would have already came up.

 

I'm not sure how I feel about Derpy. I mean her name was Ditzy Doo originally , so the idea she's just ditzy seems plausible.

 

Personally I would be so ecstatic if it were a blind pony character , even if they were just around for one episode.

Shows rarely ever have blind characters , so unless the blind pony was a jerk , it would be my new favorite pony.

I hope there isn't an episode on disabilities. I know that sounds awful, but the problem is that it smacks of a http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VerySpecialEpisode. These kinds of episodes tend to be preachy, extremely artificial, and in many ways more insulting and demeaning than helpful. I worked with a lot of disabled people during the 80's when these kinds of episodes were very popular on TV. They usually got pretty upset over such episodes because the episodes trivialized the real issues and the tone of the episodes were so removed from the norm you wondered if they were actually from a parody or satire show. I'm sure the MLP:FiM writers are aware of this, and would work to not fall into that trope-trap, but it's a very, *very* hard trap to avoid when you have a 22-minute time constraint.

 

A better way of doing this is simply having a disabled character that is treated like an actual character throughout the series, rather than a caricature for one episode. Lead by example, and don't do the standard 2x4 moral "Look at the freak" story. Which may be what they are already doing with Scootaloo and Derpy.
