Equestria Girls NYT Article; Meghan McCarthy reportedly head writer for movie

Whelp, a nice little article loaded with more information on Equestria Girls is on NYTimes.com.

 

 

So Hasbro created Equestria Girls, a parallel world in which the My Little Pony characters were reconceived as teenage girls in high school. To maintain continuity, Hasbro retained the same creative talent, animation style and message of friendship.

 

“Our goal is to stay true to who those characters are,” said Meghan McCarthy, the head writer for the movie, adding that the high school setting allowed for new storytelling possibilities. “It’s new but still an extension of our mythology.”

There's even a trailer for it! Is that new too? Anyhow, looks like my guess for the villain of the thing was correct, and Twilight seemed awfully touchy-feely with that yellow guy. INB4 Twiliscael the fandom rages . Interesting. Didn't really make me any more optimistic about the thing, but it was interesting to see.

Can't be 100% positive, but it sure sounds like this film will share MLP: FiM's voice talent. And Spike's puppy love for Rarity looks like it'll get a very literal translation.

 

I'd imagine that good financial returns on this limited release film wouldn't hurt the case for a full-length pony movie...

I guess it is a good thing that she is the head writer for Equestria Girls, if she will stick to her promise to staying true to the characters then there will be no worries for now.

Yes... High school opens way for different ideas. STUPID ideas. The mane six are ponies living in this magical land called Equestria. They live their lives and they fight evil creatures. They are not mutant girls in a school.

 

I hope we can see a REAL MLP:FIM movie after this abomination. Honestly, I'll be happy if I can get a decent season 4 after Season 3's ending.

But wow, just read the article and watched the trailer....so cool....finally we have some small footage of it...and seeing the trailer for it makes me even more hopeful about the series!! Love how it's played, and I'm starting to get even more excited for Equestria girls!! Thanks so much for sharing!!

 

But the plot actually seems cool, and now we have a sneak peek at the villian. And I caught glimpses of DJ Pon-3 and the CMC as humans too!! Looks soooo cool! Can't wait! And the good thing is that from the trailer it seems the mane six will keep their same voice actors!!! So that's awesome!! 

 

And there's a guy apparently that Twilight meets...prepare for the shippings!!

 

But overall it actually looks kinda cool and can't wait!! I'm still a bit worried about how the series will be, but I'll keep remaining positive!!

Finally a trailer.

 

Can't really say this made me more optimistic about it. The animation is kind of whacky as it is. I would have much preferred humans that are you know.... human...... For one the fan art is superior to the official art.

 

The much feared high school and boy stuff really turns me off here. Why can't it just be an adventure into human society? Sorry if I'm being a little too bashful but I really think they missed great opportunity.

Intresting trailer, I think I'll go see because it's the same characters and I love MLP FIM so yeah go see it for team pony.

 

But, seeing them as humans felt a bit weird, and kinda wrong for some reason but sort of fun and intresting, I'm literally feeling both ways about this, one half of me is excited the other is screaming "NOOOO!!!"

After watching the trailer i can honestly say that it actually looks no worse or better than I expected.

 

On a side note... That villain/antagonist character looks a lot like a pony that someone posted earlier, I think it was a thread about a possible extra character to the mane 6.

It's not just me that see's that surely? So that now makes me wonder if perhaps she might be an antagonist for season 4. Which then begs the question... If she IS an antagonist for season 4 wouldn't that make Equestria Girls canon?

It is a kind of shield, but something's off about it. There's a lightning bolt instead of a star. Hm, the voice seems different too, as well as the skin color being different. Still, interesting idea.

I agree with the both of you. It's safe to the say the writing will at least be decent and everyone well stay somewhat in character.

I just watched the trailer and I'm pretty excited for the release! I've been trying to have an open mind about Equestria Girls since I first heard about it, and hearing that McCarthy is the head writer makes it seem even better. I'm still not sure how to feel about Dog Spike though....but seeing all the other characters (Vinyl, CMC, etc.) makes it seem okay. GAHHH CONFLICTING EMOTIONS.

 

I'm definitely going to go see this when it comes out.

Well, I just watched the trailer...

 

To be honest, it doesn't look terrible, but it doesn't look good either. I'm pretty neutral, save for one thing: Spike the Dog...

 

Just...

 

Why?

 

Regardless, it seems that Sunset Shimmer actually IS canon to something... odd! All the rumors spinning around, and it turns out she's going to be in Equestria Girls. Weird, but...

 

I'll give this a chance, but I really hope this isn't going to be canon to Friendship is Magic at all.

That was my main concern, and now that it has been confirmed that it has nothing to do in relation with the main series, I'm alright with this now.

 

As for whether or not it'll actually be good... well, the trailer was okay, I suppose, so we'll just have to see what happens.

The chances of me watching this on release just sky rocketed.

The thought of Twilight adjusting to a human body is hilarious. It actually looks better than i thought it would. I'm so glad to see the character design isn't a busy mess of colors like it was in the teaser images getting around. Although i have mixed feelings about spike.
