Why high school?

What does Equestria Girls have to say about the ages of the mane 6?

I don't think it says anything about their age. We already know the dimension forces a form upon Twilight and Spike. Why should a forced age and position in said dimension be out of the question? How does age even translate from equestrian to human? Do ponies mature faster than humans? Meaning Twilight chronologically may be sixteen but has the physical maturity of a ninteen year old. Are those humans even normal humans? Are they perhaps ponies kidnapped and trapped in this dimension? We don't really know enough about the plot to be saying one way or another. We know so little about the narrative of this movie.

We have to remember that EQG is aimed for young children, and a typical setting for this age school is school, usually high school.

Aside from being a pivotal moment in any persons life, any other school setting wouldn't really work Middle School and below is too young for anything "serious" to happen. There are also limits to what can be done. College doesn't really force the same level of interaction that Highschool does with students. Emphasis on force.   While it might not be canon, it can say a bit about their character. No doubt those who dismiss their Highschool memories might wonder how they might do or have acted if they were the person they are now

I think it was set in a high school because that is one of the most important moments in our life. The show could honestly work in almost any environment, but I think the producers did this for dramatic effect.

Okay, so you all know Equestria Girls took place in a high school, right? Well, I noticed something odd about that.

Why high school?

Now that may be a dumb question, but just hear me out.

In Equestria, the Mane 6 act older than say, a 16-year-old would. They have jobs, they own their own houses and they go on magical adventures.

So if they are all 16-18 here (I'm guessing that's how old they were), how old are they in Equestria?

By the way, I couldn't decide whether to place this in Show Discussion or here, so move it if needed.

I'm guessing its just marketing. There's no point trying to rationalise consistency when the marketing department has been at an idea!

Hmmm, Maybe ponies mature at a faster rate than humans? Like 1.5 pony years = 1 human year. So then when if for example a pony was roughly 25 in pony years they would actually only be 17 in human years lol. Just a theory though lol

Hmm, this is a interesting question.

I guess they are aimed at 12-16 yr olds so I would say they are probably 15/16 (it is mentioned that sunset shimmer has won in years past).

They also seem to be the oldest in the school (or near the last few years) judging from the CMC and snails/snips being in the schools as well who are alot younger in equestria.

I don't think you can say that they are a set age judging from this. I mean she went through a interdenominational mirror thing that changed everything and the poines would not see this as an age changing thing because they would not know (and didn't seem to ask) how old the people where at the school so would just think that in this dimension this is what a young adult 18-20 yr old did.

BTW where grades even mentioned?

The ages of all the characters were messed around with for EqG. The one that points this out the most is Cheerilee. In the show, Cheerilee and Rarity were part of the same school play when they were fillies (Cutie Mark Chronicles), so their ages can't really be more than one or two years apart. Yet in the movie, Cheerilee is a teacher/librarian while Rarity is still a student.

We don't know how old they are. All we know is that they have jobs. Rarity, for example, has a "full" job, unlike Pinkie Pie who could be said is an apprentice. Rainbow Dash not only has a job, but is in charge of weather in Ponyville. Etc...

The age itself is not the problem in my opinion, but if they are ready to act as adults, which they are in my opinion, because Equestrian society may be very different than ours. After all, a pony understands what it wants from life very early.

Anyway, my point is that they are past the "high school" stage.

Because the market for EG is tweens and High School is something that sells to them. So yeah it's just marketing to the target audience even though half of the people that saw this have been out of high school for years now.

Well in my opinion. when have those all girl main cast shows ever been in middle school or elementary school or even college? The winx club, was high school, Totally Spies was in highschool (I think) and Bratz (the show and the movie) was in highschool.

I think it's mainly because in reality highschool if a hellhole that is nothing like what they showed on tv. But they know that little girls were going to be watching the movie, so they glamorized it. Which I am assuming that they think that little kids will be more inclined to want  to go to highschool (and stay in it) because they think it'll be like the highschools on tv. Which is totally stupid because I mean, they're gonna grow up and see the truth someday. (I mean look at Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl!)

I don't have a problem with it, as a matter of fact I thought it was a great setting: my only issue is that it doesn't make any logical sense. We saw Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon at the same age as the Mane 6 in the high school, so why are they all the same age? I believe the Mane 6 are adults, because they do semi-adult things, and don't answer to parents for their actions.

Maybe it is because ponies mature earlier than humans. Maybe the ponies are (what would be in the human world) high school age (16-17), but because ponies have shorter lives, they would mature and be called adults at a younger age.
