Yep the book is considered as a classic, and I had read it before. It was definitely a great book though I honestly prefer Rumble Fish over The Outsiders big time.

I read this book several years ago when I was required to do so in 7th grade. I don't remember a lot of it, and I wouldn't consider it to be one of my favorite books, but it was okay.

So far, my favorite books that I've been required to read for school are some of the ones we read for 10th grade.

Being in Algebra for my 4/5 hour, we didn't get to read it in class.  I tried reading it independantly and couldn't get through it.  I read some other, much better book when we watched the movie in class and got yelled at because I wasn't paying attention yet everyone around me was talking so it's not like I would have payed attention to it anyways.

I read it for my English class in 7th grade along with To Kill A Mockingbird, and they were both great. Also, 1993? Wasn't it published in the 60s?

I was going to read Rumble Fish at one point but I lost the copy I had before I got too far.

I was required to read that book for this year. I think you'll really like the ending. I haven't looked into S.E. Hinton's other works, but I might give one of her others a shot.

The Giver by Lois Lowry is considered a classic, and it was published in 1993. A book doesn't have to be old, it just has to be able to make an impression on readers with a message relevant in our daily lives. Classics tend to be old because they do just that across several generations.

Correct, 1967. Also To Kill A Mockingbird was another  amazing book, probably my favorite book I read in highschool. The outsiders was also pretty good. Read The Road a modern masterpiece.

Yes, it is among my favorites that are required readings. It has quite a good balance of drama and action. The only book I liked better than that is Jurassic Park, but that isn't required.

Having been forced to read this book in more than one English class, I slowly began to dislike this book thanks to that.  My first impression of it was an over-all, "Meh..."  I'm happy that I don't have to read it again.

I had to read The Outsiders for English, too. I didn't mind though, because there was enough gay subtext to keep me entertained. I may or may not have cried; MY FAVORITE CHARACTER ALWAYS DIES ;A;
