When Discord took over Ponyville he turned everyone into their opposites. Big McIntosh turned into a dog (you know what I mean). Dogs are stereotyped as stupid, especially as Big Mac was portrayed. Therefore, it goes to show that Big Mac is pretty intelligent. And you never see him do anything that could be considered unintelligent by any means. I actually have the head canon that he's the second smartest pony in Ponyville after Twilight.
