Subs vs Dubs

It depends. When I watch anime the English dubs often have subtle differences that make a world of difference in the translation and ultimate meaning. I'd say it's about 50/50 as far as which ones I like subbed verses dubbed. If it's a movie I really like I watch it both ways depending on my mood.

I prefer dubbed, but when it's not available subbed works fine. I'm not an ultra-purist, as long as the dubbed script is true to the original's intent.

Last opera I went to was English subbed. Helped me stay awake as I read the story being performed.

In general, it varies for me. Depends on which one I watched first. If it's a good English dub, I'll stick with that. If something feels off about the voices, I'll go to the subbed version. I guess if I had to choose, I'll go with dubs for modern shows, since it saves me the distraction of trying to read subtitles and pay attention to the action on screen.

To me it depends on my mood. If I want to watch an Anime but do something else as well such as draw, I usually put on the dubbed, because I can't keep looking up from what I'm doing to read the subtitles otherwise.

Now, also it dpeneds on the voices. If I like the English dub and/or I cannot stand the Japanese voices then I usually watch it in English. On the other hand, sometimes I despise the English voices and will watch it in Japanese.

And usually my last reason from picking Dubbed, is.... well sometimes I just don't feel like reading my Anime. That's what Manga is for. *laughs*

It depends on the anime but I probably watch a few more dubs than subs. I understand the issues people have with them but I'm not too bothered by those sorts of things + a lot of English VA's are really great

With my favorite series' I'll usually watch them subbed when they come out and again with the dub release - it's a good excuse to watch it twice :proud:

If there's a dub available (and it's decent 👀) I'm absolutely watching it.

It just feels better watching it in my native language most of the time; plus emotional scenes are often way more emotional to me if I'm directly hearing what they're saying.

The only anime I've watched subbed I believe is New Game!, Dragon Maid, and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (mostly because i wanted to experience all of the memes and engrish that came out of it)

to me a show usually isn't even worth watching if it doesn't at least have a decent or passable English dub, subtitles just add another thing that I have to pay attention to and I kind of hate that.

OK. So, I love watching kung fu action movies.

The thing is, they're in chinese.

Luckily, there are subtitles under so I got used to subs.

My answer? I prefer subtitles.

Subs are objectively superior in 99.99999% of cases. For some strange reason, whenever a dubbing company casts VA's they always, always, ALWAYS sound so much cheesier/ forced than the original Japanese VA's. Even worse, these actors are never able to match the incredible emotional resonance of the originals, which oftentimes result in dramatic scenes falling completely flat. Also, non-asians are completely incapable of voicing "loli" characters properly, unless of course they were to cast a real little girl to do the voicework, which, by my calculations seems to happen 0.00% of the time lol.

I personally like watching stuff in its original form too. Same applies to western animation/ movies. I have no interest in watching, say, Toy Story in anything other than English.

Subs unless the dubs are well made.

Agreed!  For me I tend to like subs more than anything, but I can read fast!   There is only a handful of dubs I will watch like Cowboy Beboop or Dragonball Z.
