Underrated Webcomics

Josh Sinclair

Recommended Posts

We all love "VG Cats" and "8-Bit Theater," but this thread is for the underappreciated web comic artists out there.

Let's Ask Violet- It's an interesting series about a college student who opens an advice service.  The answers themselves are pretty insightful and can be funny when they need to be, and the characters are fun and likable.  You can find the first strip here: http://www.letsaskviolet.com/2012/11/05/comic-01/

I'd put more, but post of the other WCs I enjoy are popular.  So, which Webcomics do you feel need more attention?

Oglaf

Yes, it's NSFW and filled with gratuitous sex and nudity, but it's absolutely hilarious. It's one of my favourite webcomics.

There are a few SFW pages:

Lackadaisy

The story plays out in an alternate Earth based around the time of Prohibition in America.  A World of cat people.  There is some gore and violence in this comic but the story over-all has good balance between action/drama.  The artwork is very well drawn and even though the updates for the comic is slow, it's completely worth the wait.

Champions and Heroes.  This is more of a web-comic following the OC's of the two creators of the web comic.  Based on a lot of different video games.  Pretty much just a bunch of one-shots.  Always happy when they update it.

Sister Claire.  It revolves around the adventures of one by the name of Sister Claire and the possibility of another Nuns vs. Witches war.  The art style is similar to powerpuff girls and adventure time, it starts off a bit slow but it's a good story.

Off-White.  It's about wolves and has lots of mythology in it.  I'm not really sure how to explain it without giving anything away..  The art for the comic is gorgeous and the creators of the comic have been updating the older pages with newer artwork as well so updates of newer pages might be slow.

Manly Guys Doing Manly Things.  Based around an Agency that helps get Badass videogame characters jobs when they aren't on their video game quests.  Absolutely hilarious.

Not sure if these are underrated though, I doubt some of them are.

Monster Pop is really fun and REALLY cute. It's about lovely lil monster girls having slice of life adventures. The author even made cute little blogs for each character that updates pretty regularly! 2adorkable4me (*/ω\*)

Lordy be this is my kind of topic. I am an AVID webcomic reader. Half the time it's all I do on the internet.

There are a lot of comics that I read and watch over and some rank high in webcomic lists but don't seem to ever be talked about like The Furry Experience or other high quality ones like Jay Naylor's Original Life and Better Days

I read a ton of webcomics and in the throes of reading Housepets right now. It's hard to say what is and isn't underrated, especially with how ambiguous that word is already, except for a select few that are MEGA popular like Penny Arcade or xkcd. (The former of which I don't particularly care for, even being a gamer their comic has just never been very interesting unless you know the game they are talking about.)

I don't know how far this topic will go but if anyone wants to talk about webcomics they can always PM me. I'm always up for the conversation and new recommendations so in case this topic dies, there's your invitation.

Brawl in the Family pokes fun at Nintendo Characters. He recently got married so his production time has been slow, but his comic is still quite fantastic.

Another good comic is GG-guys, mostly gaming and pop culture comics. Also they don't update that much

He got married and he moved so that's twice the time. I love when he makes videos though. I loved the Ice World song soooooo much and now the new Megaman one. One would think there was extreme limitation in Nintendo's cast of characters considering the fact that most of their cast are silent protagonists but he easily proves that notion quite wrong.

Gunnerkrigg Court is the greatest webcomic ever and yet so unheard of. Makes me sad as I do put it on par with my favourite published novels and graphic novels. It really is a great piece of work.

Dx OMG yes. I can't believe I forgot about it. I just finished reading through it's archives a couple weeks ago. It's so creative! And the artstyle just continuously gets better.

It is honestly quite surprising that it's not more popular considering it's super high quality, especially when Renardine and Coyote come into play. Coyote's my favorite. <3

I would also highly recommend Bittersweet Candy Bowl for those who love drama or Next Town Over for those who like western with a twist.

Then there's Boxer Hockey (latest page = omg no D: ) or Seed. Seed is one of those that's barely started but is quickly heating up.

Also, I Am Arg is absolutely HILARIOUS. The dude REALLY knows how to make funny faces. Beware: He makes lots of dick jokes.

Ooh, my favorite webcomic fits this. Soul Symphony is absolutely wonderful. It follows Olivia, an antisocial clarinet player. She is visited by this magical bunny thing named Carl. He basically ropes her into going to people's Soul Worlds, which are a manifestation of a person's subconscious, and fixing their problems by defeating the monsters that reside there. It's so cool to see how much the art style has improved since the beginning. The writing just keeps getting better too. I love the plot twists. I've also grown to love the characters. I just find them and their interactions so interesting. I might be a bit biased since I'm a huge music nerd, though. Still, I love Soul Symphony.

Keep 'em comin', friends. I'm always up for new webcomics!

Every time webcomics are brought up I always try to mention the peeps at Katbox.net. They are a great crew with amazing comic artists. I check their page every Monday, Wednesday and Friday since those are the typical days that they update, especially Friday when Rascals (which was recently brought to Katbox) updates. I lurve the Rascals universe. <3

If one doesn't mind reading through 10+ years worth of archives there's also the You Say It First/Unlike Minverva/Namir Deiter universe. These three comics, particularly after Unlike Minerva gets a stable artist since it started out jumping from artist to artist, kept me attached for a loooooooooooong time.

Speaking of long-running but amazing series'....

If you like sci-fi, drama, comedy, toys and figurines or anything of the like you should definitely check out the It's Walky universe (Walkyverse, as Willis, the creator, puts it). It started with Roomies, a typical college dorm comic that was mostly comedy but it leads into the most epic experience I've ever had: It's Walky, where the character focus shifts to some of the other characters and their fight against a tyrannical alien overlord. This takes up a majority of the comic for many years. It then transitions into Joyce&Walky which is more or less just slice of life hijinx. Shortpacked started a little ways before It's Walky ended but is actually several years later in the Walkyverse.

There is also a spinoff universe called Dumbing of Age which goes back to the comic's roots in college and throws many of the characters from the Walkyverse into a new life but without all the alien stuff. (The Head Alien is actually a part of a kids cartoon in that universe! :P )

There's 15+ years of near-daily content to catch up on and I HIGHLY recommend it. Get to crackin', peeps!

My dad reads this webcomic called "Goblins". I've checked it out before, it's pretty cool. I don't know if it's underrated or not, but oh well. Another one he reads is Gunnerkrigg court. I haven't really checked this one out either, but it looks cool enough.

I've been told to read Lackadaisy before. Not sure why I never started it, especially when I was in a webcomic slump for a while there a few months back. I couldn't find anything to read!

I'll have to keep it in mind (I have it bookmarked so I'll remember it eventually anyway) and try to read it after I finish Housepets, No Scrying, Monster Pop and Soul Symphonic. (those last two I had never heard of before this topic.)

I have several mainstays, but the couple I'd bring up would be firstly:

Cucumber Quest. CQ is made by GgDg, aka Hiimdaisy, maker of the Let's Destroy Metal Gear! and Persona comics.

The story is about Cucumber and his friends saving the world from a terrible evil-- the whole thing looks like a sarcastic love-letter of a rip-off of the stories of all the 90s Adventure video games, with special mention of detail and colour style from Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door, Kirby and The Legend of Zelda.

If you enjoy the art style and story simplicity of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, you have very little basis for an excuse not to like Cucumber Quest as well.

This takes place while they are in the waterworld sort-of kingdom.

260.jpg261.jpg262.jpg

To say it's fun and whimsical is an understatement.

My other great like is PvP, or Player Vs. Player. TVtropes put it well: "A gaming webcomic started in 1998 by cartoonist Scott Kurtz. It takes place around the office of a small magazine production company that produces the gaming magazine "PvP", focusing mostly on the office antics of a straight-laced boss, his snobby best friend, their bratty sixteen year old intern, a naive, careless troll, and two frat boys. Over time, the cast gained a female counterpart to the intern, a love interest for the snob in the form of a feminist gamer, and some other characters. It originally started as a pastiche affectionate parody of video games and geek culture in general, moving away from that towards just being a slice of life comedy about its characters and an affectionate parody of every 80s sitcom ever made." It also has an eccentric talking cat bent on world domination, and a troll who is kind of dim.

Scott Kurtz as of 2010 works in the same building as Tycho and Gabe of Penny Arcade.

Gunnerkrigg Court is amazing. It's well-drawn and original as anything can possibly get. I have the utmost respect for anyone who can create a world with its own lore - more so if that lore is mysterious and captivating.

My favorite underrated webcomics are "Gone With the Blastwave" and "Three Panel Soul". The former being a dark humored post-apocalyptic war piece that is beautifully drawn though rarely updated. The latter is a humorous slice-of-life collection of musings based on the artists' life and those of his friends.

Agreed!  We must spread the goodness of Lackadaisy as far and wide as possible, If I may dare say so!  If I might ask you, do you know anything that is similar to Lackadaisy that you would recommend checking out?

Yo may say so! I shamelessly promote all things Lackadaisy as far as the eye can see. :P To be terribly honest, I'm not horribly familiar with webcomics, but I've heard the Seraph Inn and The Meek have been really good. Having not read either one, I'm not certain how much I can recommend them, but I've been told they're similar to Lackadaisy. :D
