Hey I am Defqon a new MLP fan, I am from another site and I post a lot in random :3 

I am just looking around at the moment as I am new, how do I get like pips or ranks?

By ranks do you mean the picture under your avatar?

 

That's all from post count if you click on it it says when it changes to the next post level or rank or w/e

As for your question, the above answers it well. If you click someone's a badge, a list of badges pops up and how many posts are needed to get there. There's also an FAQ about it, should you be interested in using that.
