Ever been in the Deep Web?

What exactly is the deep web? I thought it was some kind of digital underground where equal parts off the grid criminal enterprises and government action (like there's any difference) took place.

"The Deep Web" as it's commonly called, is a hidden portion of the Internet only accessible through certain web browsers, such as TOR. The most common site used to access the Deep Web is The Hidden Wiki. Despite being accessable from Google, this is actually a false Hidden Wiki. The true Hidden Wiki and the rest of the Deep Web can only be accessed via proxy. From there, you are able to access "deep web sites" such as Silk Road (the digital black market), child porn (which, thankfully due to the efforts of Anonymous, has been destroyed), snuff films, and other services of ill repute.

Thank you, how informative. This sounds like a Hell pit I would never wish to stumble upon.  :)

Alot of the very sinister sites you find out about from all over Google and youtube are considered 'dark web.' There is alot of stuff in the deep web that is not scary. The stuff that is not scary is likely very boring, think business intranets, academics libraries, website coding, maintenance, and databases etc. The really disturbing stuff is there, but that stuff is intentionally buried deeper in the deep web, and some so far down as what's considered Marianas Web.

Sorta wrong. Look here: http://www.brightplanet.com/2014/03/clearing-confusion-deep-web-vs-dark-web/. Don't confuse Deep Web with Dark Web.

Why is the Deep Web a hell pit? Child porn and drug dealing are only part of the deep web. See above.

You beat me to explaining it. :P

As one who was unaware of the distinction before two people just now told me there was one, it sounded like a place where vice was traded like Amazon items.

That . . . is such a cool naming scheme!  :pinkie:

Well it does have a certain allure to it all especially since the birth of the world wide web has almost created a "digital frontier," a kind of invisible world zipping about atop our own that we can't touch but can still explore. The dark web is, in essence, almost like the deepest jungle or the depths of the ocean abyss. It's dangerous and given the elements unique to the dark web, some would say evil, but there's also a kind of perverse glamour to it.

I've been to the deep web, but I've avoided the darknet.  The fact in two pages that I bothered to look through no one knows the difference shows most of you shouldn't partake.

The difference between the two is quite simple.  The deep web is everything that you can't find with a search.  These are websites that are only known by IP addresses, and are only linked through non-standard Internet browsing.  You can find a wide range of grey-area and illegal things such as how-to guides, pirated software, books, and anything you could want to know.  Think of the deep web as the bastard child of 4chan and Wikipedia.  Everything you want to know, and then some, unfiltered.  The darknet, is a portion of the deep web (similar to how your living room is part of your house), however, it is all the illegal stuff.  Shadowy things you don't want to see the light of day.  The sort of stuff where "I'm behind seven proxies" is the norm for viewing.  Corporate secrets, black market trades, drugs, slavery, child prostitution... the list goes on.  It goes without saying that many governments worldwide dedicate teams to tracking what happens on both the deep web and more specifically the darknet.

I have been in the deep web, and in fact it was how I tracked down some old songs I thought were long lost and a digital copy of a book series I've never been able to find in a public library I wanted to finish reading.  Heck, I still chat with a couple people I bumped into in chat groups on the deep web and they occasionally drop me interesting bits of news and trivia.  However, I avoid the darknet simply for some of the discussions I've seen come out of there, like someone who prided himself on being able to kidnap, then physically and mentally break the victim into a slave, then ship you the slave for $80k USD.  This person posted in horrific detail exactly how he does what he does.. and yeah, if that was on the fringe of the darknet, I want nothing to do with it.

While it is not my place to decide for you if you can or you can't go into the deep web, I highly recommend you avoid it without a lot of research and preparation and knowing exactly what you're going in there for.  I cannot say enough you should avoid the darknet.  There is nothing on the darknet that anyone in this fandom should be after.

Oh for sure. For some reason, knowing that all of that creepy stuff is described as a reflection of real human nature just makes it so intriguing. I do have a natural interest in criminality. Two of my favorite college courses were Criminology and Juvenile Delinquency. What makes people do the crime they do and how they can live with themselves afterwards is fascinating to me. Now if my intolerance for gore (and my fear of jail) wasn't larger than my curiosity, I'd have already been all up in all that stuff. My credit card data was stolen in the Target scandal a year or so ago. I am convinced my info was sold on the Silk Road!

To the deep web, yes. Just look around sometimes tbh. Find things

Dark web, no. I have heard stories from people who have been there, things like Daisy. Oh, and pictures. Thanks for that person who sent me those.

There are some sick things there, you will come out feeling terrible. Do not go to the dark web.

On the up side I now know exactly how to hide a body without a chance of being caught. Just need to get a hell load of yogurt. And a syringe.

And person above me, your card details probs wont have been on silk road, that's a majority drugs marketplace.

Actually you're probly right, although I do think its entirely possible that type of data could have been traded on SR. I follow Krebs blogs and this is what he documented during that time. http://krebsonsecurity.com/2013/12/whos-selling-credit-cards-from-target/

Yeah, several times. Don't go there. There's not much I can describe about it that wouldn't get me noscoped from orbit by the mods.

I've no reason to go to the deep web. I don't see the appeal of it unless you wanted to do something illegal, or were involved in a very obscure and taboo community.

Honestly, I'm kind of sick of hearing about the deep web.

*I read through the forum posting rules before typing this so forgive me if I should not have done this. Hopefully the warning won't be too nasty*

I love the darknet!!

You can find THE MOST BEAUTIFUL firearms there, a how-to for C4 for what would come out to 50 cents USD, and every chemical under the sun.

I have also found less pleasant things like human-trafficking.

I don't go there after finding human-trafficking.

Technically speaking, every admin on this site deals with the deep web every day. I presume that Jeric has access to the server log in and the config and database files that keep this place going. These are the things that make the regular web function. Any part of the web not accessible via normal search, and any part of the web that is "behind the scenes" is a part of the deep web.

If you run your own website and have server/database access you are accessing the "deep web". Although it makes for better media to talk about the nefarious stuff, it is a fundamental side to the web that is needed for any site to exist. Think about it, even online banking is you accessing your own corner of the deep web that no other can.

So using Google or Watson Analytics is accessing the deep web?

No. Those databases are front facing, but the support system behind them is deep web. Deep web is simply any information stored on a connected device that isn't public facing. All of the stuff you read about above is also deep web, but it isnt so sinister. Your dropbox folder classifies as deep web, as it contains data that is only accessible via direct knowledge. You can share a dropbox link to somepony else, but it isn't searchable on the public facing internet.

Yes, I have actually and I am going to state that that is not a place to mess around in, and I would recommend not to go there because if you do and not know what you are doing your life can be in danger.

Now my experience,

When I watched a lot of Creepy pastas and I researched the Deep Web as a random topic for an event at School and curiosity then got the best of me and I decided to see what was actually down there. When I downloaded Tor, set up a VPN and then got a link to the Hidden Wiki and a few other places I felt kinda excited but nervous. So I followed the link to the Hidden Wiki and I decided to only browse and not participate in nothing. I saw many interesting but really fucked up stuff in there. I saw hitmen for hire, rent a hacker, silk road (a site that sells drugs) and an article on "How to enter the Matrix". Obviously I didnt "go to the Matrix" but I saw all those other things.

Later on I followed a few other links in the Deep Web but these links were even more screwed up than before. I saw almost everything that was terrible from "Woman for Auction", Child Pornography (I got grossed out) and even snuff *dead corpses basically", I then later on seen a site on "snuff livestreams" and I said "Oh no, not anymore" so I left.

Please if you are reading this don't bother going unless you are going to bleach your eyes out at the end.

I have even saw more things that I would probably be banned for if I mention.

So using Google or Watson Analytics is accessing the deep web?

What makes something a part of the Deep Web is only if it is blocked from your standard search engines.

But to be honest I recommend not to go.
