• She sings the most songs in the show, which are all improvised. Rhyming that quickly certainly isn't a trait of a village idiot.
• The village idiot isn't really at all loved. Pinkie Pie is certainly loved by almost everyone.

As of late, only three episodes have appeared. If you want to single Pinkie out for not being focused on, I can equally declare Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Applejack and Fluttershy to all be one-note jokes. It doesn't go hand in hand, dude.

 

Pinkie Pie is loved by the community for being friendly, taking special measures within herself to let others know that she cares (like the Eidetic memory I was talking about earlier) and setting them with a positive view about life. Chumlee's a comedy foil, whose character is never explored out of him bumbling around his shop. Pinkie Pie has been taken far further - need I list examples? Take Party of One for starters.

 

The Cakes didn't want Pinkie watching the kids because she was hyperactive. Not because she was dangerous. Where do you come up with this stuff...? Take Pinkie for the kind soul she is

I'm not sure that this guy even likes Pinkie Pie. He's just being far too critical of her character and not accepting that Pinkie Pie is just showing her trademark randomness. I mean, banging your head from side to side in a bell is not much better than assaulting out of control dragons with cake. What's the cake going to do to that dragon? Well, nothing, but it was a funny scene nonetheless.

 

However, I have noticed a trend where Pinkie is sort of becoming less of a character in general. I mean, I'd offer some supporting points, but this is more of a gut feeling rather than a complex process where I've critically analyzed her character. She definitely is just becoming...less Pinkie Pie. I hope they don't turn her into the "village idiot" with an IQ that rivals that of Forrest Gump. I want Pinkie to stay the same Pinkie that I've loved since her first episode. 

 

It may be because we haven't had a full-blown Pinkie Pie episode in a while and we're ready to see some further character development on her part. I personally loved Too Many Pinkie Pies. But with all the other Pinkies going around, acting like complete idiots whose only lot in life was fun, it did make the actual Pinkie Pie herself look like an idiot for not noticing this sooner. Maybe what we need is more character development from Pinkie Pie because I also feel that she's one of the lesser developed characters. We haven't had a ton of time to bond with her lately and it's beginning to feel like the only reason she's even there is to provide comic relief. One of the biggest reasons I love this show is due to the depth of character, and with Pinkie only providing comic relief lately, she's just getting shallow and I don't like that

 

So maybe it's not that she's becoming the village idiot, per se, but more or less, she's starting to lose her character depth.

Canonically? Not at all. I highly doubt anyone would describe her that way. Nobody denies that she's extremely eccentric, but overall she's very loved for it, as episodes like A Friend in Deed and Magical Mystery Cure show well.

 

As for the point I think the reviewer was trying to make (going off what FNGR said earlier in the thread since I can't watch the video right now), I have felt that Pinkie was overall written less well during Season 3. I haven't seen the newest episode of Season 4 yet, and we have very little material to go on as is, so I couldn't say whether the trend is continuing or not. Nothing wrong with splicing her in for a few laughs of course, and cheery hyperactive randomness is a character trait of hers, but I think there's a fine line they have to walk with Pinkie in order to keep her as a lovable character and not as just a mindless way to cram increasingly odd laughs into the show. She's my second favorite pony, and I'd like to see her as more than that.

She may or may not have mental problems, social mal-adjusment, or decided to live in the land of make-believe for whatever reason.

 

I'm more interested in Fluttershy and got it into my head-cannon that the timid one is not the real personality, but that's more inconsistent character As The Plot Demands.  (Praise G1, where there were multiple similar characters so that you could choose the perfectly smart or clumsy or funny one for that problem.)

 

Pinkie Pie may be presenting herself in what she perceives as the most friendly demeanor, regardless of how smart she actually is.

She's not an idiot. She's actually very smart. Being silly is not the same as being idiot or stupid or fool. (If all these words meant the same, we wouldn't have so many different words for it.) She is silly, that is, light-hearted, she doesn't bother with heavy situations too much, as if she knew that they will survive no matter what (that's positive thinking, not foolishness). She giggles at the ghostie, because that's how her grandmother taught her. Recall the very first episode where she explains her attitude. She also has her Pinkie Sense which allows her to predict dangers and avoid them, so she doesn't have to worry much about what would happen. She's random, because she seems to be very right-brain thinking, that is, being creative and unpredictable, with lots of free associations, the Other Logic^TM whch allows for uncommon thoughts (thinking out of the box, or even inside the chimney ).

 

She's a village uplifter, if anything.

Pinkie's portrayal in S4 has definitely digressed in the episodes we have seen so far. Looking strictly at S1-S3, she is eccentric, but grounded. We understand her train of thought despite the fact there are no rails. ( ) However, so far S4 Pinkie has opened her mouth and anything from rubber duckies to pumpkin pie spews out. She has been my favorite character for every season, but if the writers continue portraying Pinkie this way, she will lose her status (for this season specifically) as soon as I see another character outshine her. Really hoping the writers turn this around.

Is Pinkie Pie the village idiot? Most certainly yes. But let's 1st see what Wikipedia has to say on the matter:

 

The village idiot in strict terms is a person locally known for ignorance or stupidity,^[1] but is also a common term for a stereotypically silly or nonsensical person. The term is also used as a stereotype of the mentally disabled.^[2] It has also been applied as an epithet for an unrealistically optimistic or naive individual.^[3]

 

The village idiot was long considered an acceptable social role, a unique individual who was dependent yet contributed to the social fabric of his community.^[4] As early as Byzantine times, the "village idiot" was treated as an acceptable form of deranged individual compatible with then-prevailing normative conceptions of social order. Since MLP:FiM means to have positive themes and goals, I don't think Pinkie is ever meant to be or interpreted as a character that we mock at her expense, we laugh with her, not at her. 

 

That said of all the other traits used to describe a village idiot, most of them can apply to Pinkie for better or worse. She is often times nonsensical; over 50% of the things she does make little or no sense and she is definitely often silly. The only other person that defies logic in the show to her level is Discord.       Pinkie is also often times very naive, to a fault and not understanding true responsibilities and a deeper understanding of how things work aside from the ponies' black and white, and as a cheerful person she has a tendency to be unrealistically optimistic at times also. Finally as shown in Feeling Pinkie Keen, she does have a savant ability to her and its hard to deny that there's a method to her madness.

 

As you might see, just because Pinkie Pie is a "village idiot" doesn't mean its to be taken negatively. If anything as a village idiot, Pinkie plays an invaluable role that adds to the show more than just comic relief.

On that note, while Pinkie I think is the village idiot due to her goofy nature, I'd actually put dash down as the least intelligent/stupidest of the mane six. While Pinkie isn't all there she has a Savant nature to her and more wisdom than ponies give her credit for when her logic holds up (like during the parasprites or in feeling pinkie keen).
Dash on the other hand is basically early show naruto level intelligence XD

Currently I have no idea what direction she is being made. She seems to be used for nothing but slapstick humor but even that is not there.

 

In the beginning it was evident she was going to be used as a genius that played the fool that surprises you with her incredible intuition and smarts but haven't seen that side of her in a while as well.
