   Very few, if anyone is ruler material, whether it's noble or common, historical or fictional, we chose and support our leaders to represent and speak on public issues, at least for those who are active in politics, however there is more to higher position than politicking, a leader is also the figurehead of the nation, keeping up with appearances can be as difficult as legislature. While I was in the navy, we had a lot of COs and NCOs that were promoted beyond their initial ability, they had to learn over time how to lead by example, they had to do a lot of watching, as to learn their job then teach the person below them in rank, whether it's the Equestria, the military or ordinary life, we are not leadership material, not in human or nature, a wolf pup does not grow up knowing how to be alpha, it's through trial and error they assume the position when the time comes, Twilight Sparkle may not be princess material, but that depends on what you think is princess material, or what your ability to inspire those to lead, and that is the goal of good leadership.

Princess Twilight has the core of a good princess, she need a long way to go to effectively rule.

she can take command when needed but she really need to get over or learn to cover her insecurities I believe she can do the right thing for the Lands but have a very hard time getting everypony behind her. she lacks grace under.. heck she lacks grace. so currently she really is not a overall good princess. but becoming one would be a great thing for the final season.

Well when I look at the royal family of my country, although they don't hold any political power... They all vary in their roles and personalities... Prince William's wife, Kate is different to her mother in law, Prince Charles's wife, Camilla... Diana was different to Camilla and the queen... And the queen was different to all her daughters and granddaughters and her mother too... They all have parts of our community that they wish to establish... For example the duchess of Cornwall established literacy awards for helping raise literacy skills... They all aim to help the community in some way.. They just do it differently... Same with the princesses... Celestia pretty much has the ruling of Canterlot and the majority of Equestria covered... She delegates roles to her sister, niece and I'm sure now to twilight as well... For when she can't be in two places at once... They are all important... For if celestia fell for whatever reason... They would step up to the plate to help maintain harmony in Equestria...

Twilight has a long way to go but, she has shown she is able to take charge and be able to handle leadership. It's usually hard to try to adjust when it comes to learning about leadership, Twilight does have some schedule and being able to handle issues that might cause some issues, I think that Twilight is as important as the other princesses when it comes to maintaining harmony.

We still don't know what Twilight is going to be princess of, but I could take a wild guess and say...friendship? Or something like it. And if she's going to represent friendship for all of Equestria, she has to be amicable. The major drawback of "normal" royal behaviour is that it can separate the royalty from their subjects. (see "Luna Eclipsed"). Even if a princess is well beloved by the people, if she is put too high up on a pedestal, they can have trouble relating to her or feeling comfortable around her like a true friend (see the Cakes' treatment of Celestia in "A Bird in the Hoof"). As Princess of Friendship, it is absolutely necessary that Twilight not act like typical royalty. Celestia did say in the season 3 finale that Twilight had created new magic. Perhaps that new magic will be reflected in her style of princessing.

 

Side note, I think when people spell "Celestia" like "Celestial", it's because "celestia" isn't a word but "celestial" is. Darn spellchecker!

Basically I agree. I don't think Twilight would have answered "princess" to the "what do you want to be when you grow up?" question, even right before the change. I think it would have been better to make her a prime minister, or a scientist, or a royal scholar or sorcerer like Starswirl the Bearded. As things stand now, she's basically Equestria's President Pro Tempore, who takes over when Celestia and Luna are both unavailable, but otherwise she's not doing much of importance in the castle, and she's certainly no diplomat or politician.

 

But if we keep lamenting what might have been with Twilight's character, we'll never appreciate the good things that are being done with her post-S3. Let's see what she can make out of this.
