Tanks of the Second World War

One of the strongest reasons why I love the Second World War has always been the tanks. To this day, it still amazes me that machines of such great power were built in a time when the Great Depression had left nearly every country penniless, and yet years later, Germany, Britain, America, the Soviets, they were all able to make tanks of various sizes, speeds, strength, firepower and durability. This is, of course, helped by Girls und Panzer, World of Tanks, and various other PC games I've played that revolve around the war.  Personally, my best tank is the King Tiger. It just looks like such a behemoth, strong and powerful beyond comprehension. While I'm aware that there have been tanks that have long since bested it, to me the Tiger II will always be the most fearsome tank of the war.

What about you guys?

The King Tiger was basically an SPG that thought it was a tank. The best tank was the T-34. If there's one thing the russians were good at, it was building tanks, and lots of them. While I'm more of an aerospace guy (I love the A-10 more than is probably healthy.) even I know that your KT's advantages are pretty much nullified when there are 20 T-34s around it.

Pretty much, yeah  ^_^  But seriously, if only the King Tiger was handled (and built) right, it would've been a right thorn in the Allies respective sides, along with a few other tanks which I cannot name. I don't know why, I just love the KT. It has such a.........fearsome look about it, especially from the front.

Then again, Germany were up against far superior forces. Like you said, Russia made loads of tanks, as did the Americans, and having become vastly outnumbered, Germany's armed forces were crushed, leaving little more than pockets of infantry and little to no artillery by the time the Russians reached Berlin. (If you watched Downfall, you'd know what I'm on about)

Ironically enough, I'm not very into aerospace or aircraft, but I can't deny that the Spitfire has my respects as one truly great fighter. It's too bad, however, that despite the fact it was the Hurricane which did most of the work in the Battle of Britain, it was overshadowed by the Spitfire, which had gained more recognition among the British public. I do like the aircraft of the war, I just like tanks a bit more.  ;)

Tanks? And World of Tanks? Sweet. Love that game, anyways, onto the topic at hand.

My favorite would be the Panther. Its sweet and fast. The Panther also has that nice easy on the eyes look. It had slopes, a rather amazing turret, and a good 7.5cm pak gun, or 75mm if you prefer mm's. I would have said Tiger II, but it had already been said, so yeah.

Awwwww yeah! Tanks. I recently went to Bovington Tank Musuem which is a British Military Base witha  musuem in it. IT has one of the only working Tigers in the world and 2 KING TIGERS :3 I have lots of photos on my camera of tanks from the musuem. The King Tiger is one of my favorite tanks awell.....I mean who in their right mind wouldn't love a behemoth such as the King Tiger.

However the King Tiger does comes with many many many flaws that makes it a bad tank. It's unreliable. It's heavy. When I say heavy I mean can't cross the Bridge heavy. It's just to darn impractical to use in the vast amount of settings of late WW2. As mentioned above the T34 was a cheap , quick and BRUTAL tank. It was rough around the edges but effective and there was a heck of a lot of them.

The Elefant is where it's at! Heaving around one of the biggest guns on the battlefield it was a cannon on steroids. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elefant

Did you know that per King Tiger it was 13 Sherman M4A3's? Include a Firefly or two in there then..... Yeah. It dosen't go to well.

Technically the Elefant is actually a Tank destroyer along with the Jagdpanther and the M10.

It's cool! You could've also said King Tiger, but the Panther's a pretty sweet piece of work too.

You lucky buck. I've always wanted to go to Bovington, and see their vast collection of tanks. The only museum I've been to with tanks in it is the Imperial War Museum in London. Oh Celestia, I can remember it clearly. They had a Jadgpanther, a T-34-85, Montgomery's M3 Grant and an M4A4 Sherman in there, plus a Mark V from WW1. What an utter joy it was to marvel at those machines, particularly the Jadgpanther. I just couldn't get over that big-ass 88mm KwK jutting out from it's sloping frontal armour. You could also look inside the tank as well, thanks to an opening in the side armor. It looked real cramped in there, which obviously meant it was both good and bad to be the crew of a Jadgpanther.

But Bovington? I'll let this link answer for you:

Let's just say it was a humbling experience, I wasn't only there for the tanks though, I went during a wargaming convetion so... MANY stalls. I believe we bought around £230-£250 worth of models :3

And you bought models at a Wargaming convention.........*writes note to self* Go to Bovington from now on, especially during events.

I bet it was humbling. Plus, it is home to the only working Tiger left in the world.....it must've been some honour to see it in person, alongside many of it's comrades. And better still, the Tiger isn't the only working tank in the museum. Pretty much every tank in there works. I really gotta go there, it looks so goddamn cool!
