technology Full PC reset: Drivers problems & lots more...

So...

My computer was having problems at startup/shutdown. I brought it back to the shop: It was infested by viruses and the only solution was to completely reset it (good thing my games were in an external HDD...).

The issues I have now:

-It seems to lag for NOTHING, like opening a tab in the Catalyst drivers app (wich says the drivers are up to date). When I first got this computer, I had lots of problems with OpenGL (Huge lag in games that used it, like Faster Than Light and Project Zomboid), wich disappeared after installing another game. Now they're back...

-I can't play ANYTHING.

Games I attempted:

  • TAGAP 1's graphics are messed up (white squares/black screens), unplayable
  • TAGAP 2 doesn't even launch
  • Just Cause 2 says a driver is missing, installing this driver doesn't do anything
  • TF2 doesn't launch, no error messages
  • Apache vs Havoc says I have NO GRAPHICS CARD
  • Mount&Blade Warband tells me to install the DirectX SDK. Installing it doesn't solve the problem
  • I Wanna Kill The Guy "Fails to draw surfaces"
  • Faster Than Light works, but lags a lot, unplayable
  • Receiver (Unity engine) crashes on startup
  • SCP Containment Breach "Fails to load the 3D scene" on startup
  • Slender- The Eight Pages (Unity engine) crashes on startup
  • Toribash lags and the menu screen is impossible to read
  • Starsector crashes on startup because "Pixel format is not being accelerated
  • 1916 Der Unbanten Krieg (Unity engine)'s menu screen animation lags and text is unreadable
  • Gimbal crashes on startup

The only games I managed to run are :

  • Fighting Is Magic
  • Transendence
  • Cortex Command

I really don't know what to do, does any of you have any advice ?

^ Like the poster above me stated, we need to know what system you're running, it may be a faulty OS.

Hey there, what kind of system are you running?

Windows 7 64 bits (or 32 bits, not sure but my computer is off)

By the way, do you have the URL to the mobile site ? It switched back to desktop on my phone, and it's painful to write on the full version...

There should be a button labelled "use moblie version" near the bottom of the page. And I meant specs (CPU, GPU, RAM, Motherboard would be nice)

Thanks for the tip !

For the specs, I only remember I have a MSI motherboard, ATI Radeon HD 7-something for the graphics, a 1To external drive with most of the software.

I'll post the full specs tomorrow when I switch on my computer again (it's almost midnight here)

Ok... Yeah, I'm going to need more details to help you see what's wrong.

Here's the full specs (from dxdiag):

Windows 7 Family Edition Premium 64 bits

MSI-7788 Motherboard

Intel Core i5-3330 3GHz (4 CPUs)

4096 Mb of RAM

Graphics : Standard VGA graphics card (Why is the Radeon HD7750 I have installed not showing up here ?)

I am still learning the ins and outs of computers but it's probably something involving the Processor, a derped restore, or the motherboard. If I used the command prompt more and knew all the commands to do, I would recommend it.

Small chance it's the RAM but you would be crashing left and right if it was. I know this sounds like a back-out answer but take it back to them and tell them the situation, every little detail from when you got it back from them and forth on.

What I would have to guess is it's a broken PCI slot or a broken GPU. You have the newest drivers for your card that was working, but it's trying to use your integrated CPU graphics card. That would explain the slowdown and crashes in games rather nicely. Is it store bought or home made?

If that were the case, then how is video signal being passed through from the iGPU to the AMD card?

At any rate, go into Device Manager (Control Panel, System, Device Manager) and click Display Adapters. This will list all available adapters and any exclamation points denote driver issues.

If there are driver issues, uninstall Catalyst from control panel, delete (select and press shift+delete) the AMD and ATI folders in C:\Program Files, then reinstall Catalyst 13.12. If that fails to fix it, then either the contacts are dirty or the card is on its way out, but the card should be ok as I'd assume it would have been artifacting long before not running 3D applications.

If you need to clean the contacts you can use a pencil eraser.

I can neither confirm nor deny myself being the cause of electrical related malfunctions. Anyways, you wouldn't happen to have a jar of replacement magic smoke would you?

a 1To external drive with most of the software.

Most seems covered (sounds like a bad driver install tbh.  Bad card would also affect desktop functions and cause the drivers to crash randomly) but this is bugging me.. Generally its not smooth running when the software is on the external.. while entirely possible and all, it can contribute to problems such as described..

try running something from an internal drive.
