MapleStory

MapleStory Posted Image

The current log

MapleStory is a free-to-play, 2D, side-scrolling massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by the South Korean company Wizet. Several versions of the game are available for specific countries or regions, and each is published by various companies such as Nexon. Although playing the game is free, some character appearances and gameplay enhancements can be purchased from the "Cash Shop" using real money.

In the game, players travel the "Maple World", defeating monsters and developing their characters' skills and abilities as is typical in role-playing games. Players can interact with others in many ways, such as through chatting, trading, and playing minigames. Groups of players can band together in parties to hunt monsters and share the rewards and can also collaborate forming guilds to interact more easily with each other.

In July 2010, the Korean version of the game was completely revised in a patch named the "Big Bang". Other versions followed suit and have since received the Big Bang update. Later in the year, the Korean version received the Chaos update which introduces PVP (player-versus-player) and professions to the game. In 2011 MapleStory saw the introduction of the Jump! (Ascension in North America), Legend and Justice updates. These updates added new classes to the game such as Cannon Shooter and Demon Slayer, as well as balancing and improving older classes.

Plot

Player's assume the roles of citizens in the Maple World with no specific objective to win the game and work on improving their characters' skill and status over time. The antagonist of the game, the Black Mage, was sealed away years ago by five heroes.[1][2] Fearing his resurrection, Empress Cygnus enlisted the Maple World to join her Cygnus Knights in preventing his evil from returning.[3] However, they failed and the Black Wings resurrected the Black Mage resulting in a cataclysm known as the Big Bang.[4]

Gameplay

MapleStory is a 2D scrolling platform game.[5] The controls for the game are executed using the keyboard and mouse. The keyboard is used for many game functions, and much of it can be rearranged to suit users' needs. The mouse is mainly used to trigger Non-player characters and manipulate items. Like most MMORPGs, gameplay centers on venturing into dungeons and combating monsters in real-time. The players combat monsters and complete quests, in the process acquiring in-game currency called "Mesos", experience points, and various items.[5] Players are able to acquire in-game professions allowing them to craft equipments, accessories, or potions.[6]

Players have a variety of options when interacting with others online: They can form parties where loot and experience are distributed from a monster;[7] in-game marriages where the game will recognize the two players as a heterosexual couple;[8] guilds which is indicated with a guild's name listed under their character name;[9] or families, a architecture gathering of juniors and seniors.[10] Players are also able to raise or lower the in-game popularity stat entitled Fame of other players and compete with other players in minigames such as Gomoku or Concentration.[11]

Yes, that was a copy paste. I'm lazy.

So, I have been addicted to this game since 2007.

Does anyone play this?

If you do, go to the "nova" server and find me.

I run a brony guild called "Ponyville".

My user is AmazlngBrony

If you are curious about this game, ask questions here.

Before you try and derail the thread, explain your reasons past a single line of text, if you will.

It looks bad~

I've never played it, and probably never will...what am I missing out on?

This was quick.

Not as fast as your ability to judge a threads rail-ment by 4 posts!

Highly additive gameplay that is not for everyone.

If you play pokemon or Final Fantasy and enjoy the grind, Maplestory is for you.

I did play this game awhile back, never had any friends on it so I eventually lost interest.

I had two times where I played it for awhile, the first ended with a level...38 or so Magiian. My second go went on longer and I managed to get to a level 69 or so Spearman.

Fun stuff, changed a lot.

Enjoying grind!

Gives me time to think while listening to music when I have to level up.

So I barely pay attention to the grinding part, but the alone time I get from it.

You need to be preoccupied in order to think? That is assuredly not the reason I play games heavy on grinding.

I'm going to do something shocking and actually discuss the game itself.

Way back in... Halloween of '07 now, I believe, I found the game Maplestory. I played the game for a while, got to level 20 or something, and joined a forum for it, it's name I won't mention. I was young, and this forum and it's community urged me to play more, even though said forum was full of uptight I'm-better-than-you pieces of garbage. Anyway, I slowly got more and more addicted to the game. I didn't sink much money into it, but the time I sunk into it... oh Celestia.

Grinding, grinding, forcing myself to spend hours in front of the computer, to watch a little number go up in the corner. So I could see the next quests, the next monsters, the next PQs, the next areas. Get the next skills, equipment. I eventually became leader of said forum's guild's Broa branch, which if anything further fueled my addiction. Kept grinding, grinding, making more characters, gaining more levels, doing more quests. Eventually the guild died of inactivity, and I left it. But I joined other guilds, guilds that had me staying up 'til the sun came up running PQs, grinding more to compete with the others. Sure, there were small gaps where I managed to break free of the game, but those were just small periods of time. It kept drawing me back in.

It wasn't until a year or two after finding the game that I broke free from it for good, and saw all the time wasted on it.

Moral of the story: While part of the blame does indeed lie on me, it doesn't change the fact that Maplestory is designed to get the naive young addicted to it in hopes they'll sink money into it.

Just my two cents.

I love Maplestory.

Level 31 Bowman. Don't remember what server I play on, though.

I love how this thread has became a 'MapleStory sucks. LET'S BASH ON IT" thread.

Objection! Hold it! Take that! Gotcha! Eureka!

I like video games and anime.

Been a while since I last played Maple... I was actually thinking of making a Dual Blade character before they became "Limited Time Only" as soon as I heard the news :P Anyways, I have some chars in Nova (your world) so I might ask if I could join in your guild if I play it next time...

I actually was going to play Maple story a while back, but I saw a rant that actually made sense of why Maple story might not be good for me to play. That machine guy sounds interesting but...

God, I can't stand Maplestory. The grinding, the farming, the elitist assholes.

Oh, and apparently only one race has mages that can increase their mana regen. The others, have fun spending all your time farming to buy mana potions. Or spending your real money on them.

It's funny, replace the title with "bronies" and put it on an anti brony forum, and the comments would be absolutely the same.

Whatever happened to,

"If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all."?

Um... I don't... Really get the point of that picture... o.o

But anyways, Rose... Just curious, but you have the three Legends classes on Nova? Again, asking out of curiosity

Yeah, I do.

My highest level is a demon slayer.

It's fairly well known that a lot of gamers can't stand maplestory, I'm surprised you didn't expect this kind of reaction :/

Hah... Demon Slayers, I was attracted to their playstyle when I made one in Broa... They're just fun to play :P I also made a Mercedes and Cannoneer in Broa, got them all beyond 70, though Demon Slayer was the only one I got real close to 4th job with... I'd try to get the DS to lv 120, but yeah :/

Somehow I feel the need to reply to this thread BECAUSE OF MY SHAME. SHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

I kinda used to play this game. Kinda don't care about it anymore. Also I'm locked out of Global on my cool accounts, so there goes any interest.

Also went to this forum thingie, not going to mention the name but I can mention it is now PonyTip.

This doesn't make any sense. If a game isn't good, a game isn't good; it's intrinsically linked with how poorly it might have been designed.

You can't have a poorly designed fandom. You're mixing facts and inferences based on facts with straight bias.
