gaming The Metroid Thread

Welcome one, welcome all to this thread about everything Metroid -- from the franchise, to its fanbase and even fanart if so desired.

Well, Metroid tends to be one of Nintendo's lesser known franchises and I've heard several people say that the series might have more success if it were cross-platform. But yeah, this thread is meant to have a little bit of something for everyone including those who've never even heard of the franchise, let alone know the simplest of things about it. If you have any question at all about the series, feel free to ask and I will kindly answer  :)

For a quick visual representation of the series, simply look at the box art of none other than the Metroid game that most Metroid fans consider to be iconic of the series

tumblr_mepgtttZAf1rk06glo1_500.jpg

I simply picked the Japanese box art because it looks better than the western one.

As for the fan projects that I'm aware of, one notable project would be Harmony of a Hunter which is a fan tribute to the series for its 25th anniversary that happened back in 2011. Basically an album of remixed songs from the games.

Another noteworthy Metroid fan project would be Project AM2R which is a fangame in the works.

Now have some fan art

I wish I got into the Metroid series sooner. The first game I ever played was Metroid: Other M. I thought it was alright, but what I don't understand, is why does like everyone else who played it, call it terrible?? Did I miss somethin' due to havin' to play a game out of order, or is the game just generally bad??

It's good to hear that I'm not the only one who still remembers the Metroid series, it might not be a cross platform game but I think that if more people knew about it the series would definitely be one of the series that Nintendo can still be proud of.

ah, metroid.

to me, metroid is one of nintendo's best series. tough that opinion isn't shared by a whole lot of people sadly.

still, i played the buck out of metroid fusion on the GBA, and i really love the original first one too.

Short answer: many headcanons were ruined.

Long answer: I wouldn't say generally bad but it's the story that particularly got people grinding their teeth. While monologues were already a thing in Metroid Fusion, many onsider Other M to be plain overboard. For many including myself, Samus' portrayal as an emotionally fragile and subordinate demeanor contradicted her collected, calculated and subtle portrayal in the Metroid Prime trilogy -- Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption did show her expressing emotion purely through body-language which did very well to humanize her already.

Haha this video actually does make sense. I did always find it so odd that Samus needed this "Authorization" to use her abilities and weapons. I watched another video on of a Let's Player rage his way all the way through the game because how much they ruined the game compared the the prequel and sequel.

As for my own opinion on Other M -- I'm only going to comment on the gameplay -- I really missed that rat-in-a-maze exploration feel that is considered a staple in the series. Because the paths you have to take are practically lit up with arrows, there's no sense of freedom or discovery.

Another complaint I have are the aesthetics. For one, the Galactic Federation troopers looked a lot better in the Prime trilogy while the ones from Other M looked kinda bland by comparison. Also bland by comparison are the environments. Maybe that's because the previous game Metroid Prime 3: Corruption set the bar really high with SkyTown Elysia which kinda looks like a steampunk colony floating above the acid clouds of Venus (start from 2:40). You see, the developers of Prime 3 did their earnest to introduce unique environments to the series other than the cliched jungle, fire and ice environments.

Prime 2 is personally my least favorite Metroid game

Aw, it's actually one of my favorite Metroid games XD

Though I can sorta understand. What I commonly hear is that many people disliked the ammo system and then there's also this:

Many rages were had

I actually enjoyed the ammo system since it added this economic feel to the gameplay and also gave me more expansions to collect for 100% runs. I'm also one of the few people who seem to like the Dark Suit. Lastly, I just love the world of Aether and the Luminoth.

Ahh Metroid. My first experience, being 20 years old, was Prime 1, back in 2002, when I was 9. I'll give credit where credit's due, that game is probably what solidified my interest in music. Before then (as a third grader and below), I didn't really care much for what I was hearing. That all changed when I walked into Magmoor Caverns for the first time, and then changed again when I walked into Phendrana Drifts shortly after that.

Some of my friends and I recently had the discussion of "What's the best game that you've ever played, and is that your favorite game?" I answered thusly: Mass Effect 2 was (and is) the best game I've ever played. It is very closely followed by other X360 games such as Halo 3 and Skyrim. As for my favorite game, while I believe Metroid Prime 2 to be a slightly better game, that honor has to go to Prime 1.

Being such a fan of the Metroid series, I was horribly let down by Other M. It shouldn't take me 10 minutes to figure out the first flippin' screen of the damn game. It was like playing Where's Waldo in the dark, trying to find that stupid ass sticker or logo or whatever the hell it was on that ship. Not being able to move while shooting missiles is something I didn't like about Hunters, and something I still didn't like about Other M. Other gripes tended to be with the "What the everliving fuck am I even doing?" feeling I had while playing it, not being able to tell whether what I just killed was a boss or not, the fact that I wasn't able to use all my shit because some random ass dude told me not to, and that Samus was a crybaby. I'm sure a couple of people will want to rip out my throat because I said that, but it's the general agreement between me and my friends that the portrayal of Samus in Other M isn't even close to what it was in the previous games.

I've only played the 3D Metroids, and I loved all of them(well, maybe just liked Other M, love is a strong word for that one). Haven't played the 2D ones save for Metroid II which I haven't fully delved into, but I have watched playthroughs of them, Super looks really cool and I will get around to playing it someday...

My personal favorite would probably be Metroid Prime 2 Echoes- sure, the original Prime is absolutely fantastic too, but I think Prime 2 took what Prime 1 had, and built more fun and challenging gameplay around than the first. The only one I truly 100%'ed(well, Other M too, but that's piss-easy to do honestly lol), Prime 2 is one of my favorite games of all time.

Also, we need a new Metroid made sometime soon dammit- I don't care if it's 2D, 3D, or even Other M-y, we just need something new already! :okiedokielokie:

I just now remembered I played another Metroid game for the Wii....I played it after Other M. Now if only I could remember the name. Anywho, I know one thing I wanna learn...Ridley's backstory. Ridley seems like such a beast.

The only Metroid I've not played/don't own is Other M, probably never will. I've watched plenty of videos on youtube of it and pretty much everything about it does not sit well with me. I'm leaving it at that.

First one I ever played was Metroid 2 which my uncle gave to me when I was little and my dad bought me my brand new GameBoy, by far one of my all time favorites in the series. It's probably the one that is least known/played/appreciated since it was for the GameBoy. Super Metroid is of course my absolute favorite though, they just got everything right with that one. Would kill to be able to play it on the go on my 3DS, though I'd be happy to see Zero Mission come to the 3DS. VERY disappointed Fusion never will since it was an Ambassador game, I have a friend that has it and I so wish there was a way to get it from him since he doesn't even like Metroid.

The Prime games are awesome, I love all 3 and hope there will be more. I bought my Wii just for Prime, already had 1 + 2 on my Gamecube but I went ahead and purchased 3 and a Wii. Followed by the Trilogy once it was released so I could play the first two with the Wii controls.

What I really want though is Metroid 2 to be remade in the same fashion as Zero Mission, and a new side scroller using 3D models/enviros (pure, straight-up side scroller that does it right like Super Metroid). Probably the only way Nintendo will get me to buy a Wii U will be with the release of a good Metroid game. Prime style or side scroller. Nintendo does not give this series the love it deserves, I mean they skipped the N64 altogether for crying out loud! Hopefully the Wii U will not be a repeat of that, or if it is the next game better be on the epic scale that Prime was.

Well, so far there have only been vague inklings.

http://www.idigitaltimes.com/articles/20982/20131130/metroid-wii-u-retro-studios-nintendo-prime.htm

Considering Retro is "obviously... a very high priority" for developing Metroid Wii U, and considering they can work on multiple projects at once, it doesn't seem too far-fetched to guess that Retro is actually already working on Metroid Wii U.

It isn't the first time we've gotten an inkling telling us that Retro Studios might be the developer for the next Metroid game.

it was a fun game, yeah, quite on the easy side and some aspect of the story went overboard, was kinda questionable. And I think Samus's portrayal as fragile was overdone, would have made sense if it was a prequel of the whole series, but come on, they had to made her too depressed and melancholic AFTER ALL THE STUFF SHE WENT TROUGH LIKE A BADASS. The worst offense was when she froze facing Ridley... after she defeated him 5 times previously. But overall, it was OK, I was more dissapointed by Super Mario Galaxy 2 and New Super Mario Bros WII, sadly, I can't play it again because my Wii won't read it anymore, and I don't feel like repairing it because I rather buy a WIIU for that

yeah, hate the ammo system, it didn't let me enjoy the beams properly, one of my favorite things in Prime 1. I actually hate more THIS GUY

Morphball battle, the aura can bypass floors, awkward bomb jumps in thigh time, it gets in the way frequently, you get it, but it was toned down in the WII version supposedly

I think Retro has too much talent to simply be regulated as "that Metroid developer". Honestly I'd rather see Retro work another old IP like Starfox, make a new IP or even bring back one of their cancelled games like Raven Blade or Car Combat while Nintendo Proper or even Team Ninja works on it again(and before anyone lynches me, Team Ninja had absolutely no say in the story)

I love Metroid. Not only because of the whole isolation feel to it and adventure, but also because Samus is one of the most awesome female protagonists in gaming. Losing her parents when she was a child, being raised by a member of a race that has gone extinct, and defeating space pirates at every corner of the galaxy with a suit made by the chozo. All the while, by herself. She finds herself coming face to face with some of the most deadliest creatures in the galaxy and takes on the galactic threat known as the space pirates and their leadership, all in a day's work.

I played just about every Metroid game, with the exception of a few. These are the ones I played.

  1. Metroid
  2. Metroid 2 Return of Samus
  3. Super Metroid
  4. Metroid Fusion
  5. Metroid Zero Mission
  6. Metroid Prime
  7. Metroid Prime 2 Echoes
  8. Metroid Prime 3 Corruption

So yeah, I am a biiiig fan of Metroid. :P

I love the Metroid games. I don't know how many times I've played Prime 1. I made sure to go back and beat every game. I liked Other M too, and it makes me sad that so many people don't. I honestly thought it was a fun game, albeit the controls did get a little iffy every once in awhile and I was a little disappointed that it played like a movie. But I thought the cut scenes were beautiful so it didn't bother me too much.

Lurves me some Metroid. I think the only game I haven't played yet is Prime Hunters. I have Other M but I've only played a couple hours into it. I really wish the game let you play with a Classic Controller. The Wiimote isn't all that great but the gameplay itself is pretty awesome.

I'm in a bit of a minority here but I never liked the Wiimote controls of Prime 3. In fact, the only reason I don't replay it is because I completely and utterly hated the Wiimote controls for it. It was just a huge kick in the balls when they put out the trilogy with all of the Prime games with Wiimote controls but NOT an option to use Gamecube or even Classic in the third game.

Metroid is one of my favorite Nintendo mainstays; it's #2, just behind Zelda. I'd trade, like, the 5 latest Mario games for just one new Metroid game, I swear. Samus is definitely my favorite intergalactic bounty hunter; I want new Metroid game sometime soon.

First Metroid I played was Metroid Fusion but I didn't really get into the series until the Prime trilogy started. The 3D world was cool and everything, but the really good part was the sense of adventure the game had with the planets' designs and the scanning to add to the lore.

@@Mutemutt, you know, while Metroid Fusion may not be the first Metroid game I played, it was key to really getting me into the series. The first one I played was actually the first Metroid game on the NES which I played back in 1995 or so. I didn't get far because the NES broke. Then in 2002, this happened.

As soon as I heard the name "Metroid", I immediately thought about the NES game I had played 7 years back. I wanted to experience something I felt I was robbed of so long ago. So I got that game on my 13th birthday and simply loved it! Me and my cousin talked about it who I had also lent the game to and he mentioned Metroid Prime to me which I did get for my 14th birthday. Yeah, that sealed the deal for me as a Metroid fan. To my utmost surprise, Metroid Prime has this unlockable where if you were to connect the game with Metroid Fusion, you can unlock NES Metroid which gets you to play the NES Metroid on the GameCube. Just wow.
