No, i really don't think so..... It's the quality and attention to detail that drew bronies to gen 4 in the first place.... That's something the previous generations sorely lacked...... I personally love gen 4 because we'll..... It's a genuily good show, with great- non shallow story lines that run the gauntlet for comedy, adventure, and slice of life, while refraining from being especially girly and cheap.

I don't think so at all. Those were the generations where the show was starting out, without the past generations we wouldn't have this huge improvement in the current season with the story lines and stellar animation. Without the three generations, we would not have what we have today in the show.

The fanbase was still starting out along with the three generations, so it started to grow when they decided to revamp with Generation 4.

I've actually watched generations 1, 2 and 3. The first two generations are pretty good, but generation 3 was by far a terrible feat in writing, design, animation and everything. They are lucky it was renewed for another show to be perfectly honest.

And, somehow, I think they managed to top it's terribleness with the 3.5  newborn cuties.....

It's like they didn't even fucking try. They don't even open their mouths to talk, and certain sound effects like thunder and RD falling into the mud aren't present (tho maybe the sound effects missing have something to do with a glitch in the video, but I doubt it).

(also skip to 6:17 in the video at your own risk.....)

A moment of silence for the brave souls who were lost to this terrible abomination

(I was gonna brohoof it, but I felt it sounded bad ("My Friends are dead",  SirWulfington Likes this) even tho I know it's a joke :P, which makes it silly that I'd feel that way)

The previous generations were way too shallow, and I also give a moment of silence for those souls who perished watching that horrid G3.5 newborn cuties.

...................

Now then, this generation has more mature themes and delves very deep. To me, the other generations weren't "real", meaning they had pure fantasy situations, which G4 still has, but their society is just like ours in many ways.

I really don't think so. While G1 is respectable, both the animation and plot development have aged very poorly. If FIM used what they had for G1, the MLP fandom might've stayed stagnant. Tales (a part of G1; G2 never had a TV series), G3, and G3.5 disrespect Bonnie Zacherle's origins and ambitions of creating a gender- and age-blind market and are so horribly written; if FIM was anything like those, MLP would've been dead.

6:17 is by far the creepiest thing i have ever seen, she just stares back at you for about 5 seconds ;_;

I haven't seen the original G1 but hear it's pretty good. I'll give it a watch one day.

MLP tales I have no interest at all in watching, as the series does pretty much the exact opposite of the original. You can check out my thread on why MLP tales is so bad http://mlpforums.com/topic/71687-is-my-little-pony-tales-the-anti-friendship-is-magic/

I'm not quite getting all the hate on G3. I have several G3 tapes & DVDs and there isn't anything detrimental on there. Sure it doesn't have the character depth or morals that FiM does, but it does have decent voice acting, good animation and a nice music score. Not recommended for serious viewing, but it is a fun watch that kinda connects with that fun loving fantasy peaceful part of my brain.

G3.5 I have yet to nor ever plan to view.

I highly doubt it. While Generations 1 and 3 were actually not that bad; they were nothing compared to Generation 4. And considering the last generation prior to Generation 4 was Generation 3.5; I highly doubt the franchise would become as popular as it is now if it kept going with "Newborn Cuties."

If it had continued from Generation 1 or 3 though, I think it would have had a better chance, but I still don't think they were that good. Generation 4 was a major step up from the previous generations, and that's the main reason it got so popular.

  • 7 years later...

I don't think the previous cartoons would stand a chance to FIM in terms of popularity. The 80's series is usually considered to be the best of the old cartoons but it still lacks a lot of what made FIM so special, even more so with the other cartoons. They may have had a small following yet they would be nowhere near as popular as FIM is.
