I've been wondering for a while, why do Bronies get so attached to background ponies like Vinyl Scratch or Lyra, who have very few lines and little is known about their personalities? Not hating at all I just want to know why you feel this way. :)

Because they can.

I think that is probably the most accurate answer.

Well I think that the show is good at making the background characters have little bits of personality show just through their few little actions or lines that they have, so it's easy for fans to start imaging back stories for them, and they just tend to become something sort of designed by the fandom.

It's basically a sense of investure. Because they are background ponies, it's possible for the fandom to 'claim' them and build their own community-driven stories around them with a low chance of something canon coming out to contradict it. Those that contribute to this, via art, fiction, or just speculation on various forums, begin to feel like the characters are 'theirs' in some way. They've become invested in these background characters. The more fans contribute, the more it snowballs.
