Fluttershy insulting Pinkie Pie and Rarity

No one deserves to have their dreams and passions ripped on.

And personally I liked the manipulation in this episode, made Rarity and Pinkie Pie much more human instead of 'perfect',

their flaws make them more relateable. And I for one like that.

LOTS of girls do what Rarity did, have you ever been to a bar or club?

Don't act so innocent and judge them,

as if you've never tricked someone etc to get something you wanted.

I honestly can't remember the last time I tricked someone to get what I wanted.

Yes, the whole human relation thing is what made the episode great. However, that's also what's gotten me slightly irked.

When Rarity does that it, it bothers me (and she's my 2nd favorite pony). Not gonna lie, in fact I was sort of pissed off when Rarity did that. I don't really like the whole, "If you're pretty just seduce and use people to get what you want!" idea. It was admirable when she used her ability to free herself from the diamond dogs, but here it felt like a mass of disturbance (at least the seduced guy got his money back).

And I suppose Pinkie wasn't bad at all this one. If you ask me, neither one of them were helping Fluttershy's cause to become assertive in the first place. It was more of teaching her to take advantage of people, which isn't a very nice message (so to speak), as clever as the idea might sound.

I will be honest. I think kids could easily take the message in this one the wrong way. Not to mention, it seems like alot of the main characters were going dead against their supposed Elements of Harmony. Isn't that the reason they stopped working in Return of Harmony?

That is the problem. While it works very effectively in this episode, it honestly bothered me. As I've said my statements before, you can check them out

To put it another way, if I was some evil wizard or other main villain, I'd pick that exact moment to invade Equestria. Not really because of Fluttershy, but because of how alot of the characters were acting. If anything, Fluttershy was just reacting to an already hostile environment. And after what happened in Return of Harmony, they should be careful how hostile they become. Fluttershy just happened to realize that she had taken it too far, but it could have easily gotten much worse. Remember what happened when Twilight went crazy? Princess Celestia had to intervene.

I do admit though, the scene after this one is pretty funny when you take it out of context.

Must be the first time I actually felt a little angry towards Fluttershy. While assertive Fluttershy was hilarious through most of the episode, this particular scene made my heart tear up a bit.

Dear Princess Celestia,

Today I learned that everypony is basically an obnoxious, self-serving, manipulative jerk.

But there's nothing a group hug can't fix in the end.

Your faithful student,

I have a love/hate thing with this episode. The first thing that comes to mind is how much I disliked several messages within it.

1) "Asserting" yourself is fun, and equals taking advantage of others.

2) It's okay to seduce to get your way.

3) Bartering for a lower price is worth it - bleep if there was a decent reason for the tomato vendor to raise the price. (The cherry vendor was an advantage-taker it seemed, though).

4) I have never liked how Angel treats Fluttershy, and I find it even less acceptable that Fluttershy puts up with Angel's mistreatment of her - oh he slapped you in the face this time? Better make that fancy feast so he doesn't starve! /gag

I want to say I liked it because it did have several funny parts in it, and even though I felt sad that Pinkie is a con artist, I did find the Bugs Bunny humor entertaining. I do think they should have just paid the two bits for tomatoes - so what if it was one bit last week? - prices change and arguing like a jerk with retail people, seemingly encouraging people to argue prices, ugh, as if those working in retail don't already have to deal with constant @#$&$#% from ignorant, illiterate, aggressive, annoying, stuck up people. It was two bits on the sign. Agh.

I do think Pinkie Pie and Rarity deserved a telling-off, but what Fluttershy actually said wasn't relevant to how they should have been told off. I was proud of Rarity for standing up for Pinkie Pie when Fluttershy said Pinkie Pie had a simple little brain (pfft! as if! Pinkie Pie understands physics 100%, therefore how to control and manipulate dimensions, and her memorization skills are legendary) and I was proud of Pinkie Pie for coming to Rarity's aid, defending her life's passion.

Then Fluttershy said: "Oh, and what are you passionate about? Birthday cake? Party hats? I can't believe that the two most frivolous ponies in Ponyville are trying to tell new Fluttershy how to live her life when they are throwing their own lives away on pointless pursuits that nopony else gives a flying feather about"

Okay everypony, last episode... Smile Smile Smile... hmm... passionate about making others genuinely happy. That totally equals party hats. "Throwing their own lives away on pointless pursuits" *looks back over Pinkie Pie and Rarity attributes* yeeea... no... no points for Fluttershy there.

I understand Fluttershy going nuts (interpreting assertive as aggressive) was the comical point and learning center - but there is definitely a difference between the two. A big difference. But I genuinely wish Pinkie Pie and Rarity had actually tried to teach her to be assertive with relevant situations. Or, pretending Rarity and Pinkie Pie still acted terribly, Fluttershy points out to them in her anger the truth of their faults - how Fluttershy noticed it was cruel and mean for both of them to knowingly take advantage of others as they did and deem it fun. How could they criticize Fluttershy when they were just as much in the wrong? All 3 learn a lesson!

Or this episode just proved that Discord is loose, or whatever turned Luna into an evil mare of darkness (I laughed so hard that very first episode on that part XD) is running rampant. I don't know. I just wish real lessons were learned instead of terrible things taught. We don't need MLP FiM to turn into trash TV like most of the other little kid shows where being a selfish, evil, malicious little prick is totally cool and okay because you're expressing yourself! Just look at any Disney channel show nowadays/for the last five years or more...

Pinkie Pie is my favoritest of the mane six for several reasons, but most importantly because she always has a good attitude. The others can doubt her, say somewhat unkind things, not believe her, and she just rolls with it. I also love her because her self-defined purpose in life is to make others happy. I believe her balloons cutie mark actually represents her uplifting others. Her amazing dimension bending and psychic powers are a factor, too :) When poor Pinkie Pie looses her mind, well, it is quite humorous. She has her own depression demons to fight, yet focuses on others. The world will be a better place when she succeeds in breaking that 4th wall! >:D

Pinkie and Rarity's attempt to teach Fluttershy assertiveness were downright horrible, and sent a bad message while doing so. As you said, they took advantage of other people. Not so much with Pinkie Pie but Rarity, as I said, seducing a random person was just... dirt. No other word to describe her action.

I really hope they all learned their lessons. I didn't like seeing Rarity take advantage of another pony. Hopefully, we won't see this type of stunt from her again.

Do you think that it was overly done for comedic effect? I don't really see much of a problem with Pinkie Pie haggling (it happens all the time.) Rarity however...don't me wrong it was hilarious, but really? I always get annoyed with girls who flirt their way through things, and Rarity was no different during that scene. So in that respect, let's hope she never does it again.

Unless...that nerd pony appears in a future episode with a huge crush on Rarity. I wonder how she would handle that situation, being the element of generosity, and all? Would she be nice and go on a date with him?

Not to mention, the fact that she uses her stare at the end brings up another point. She has the freaking STARE! Why does she need to learn to be assertive when she's already shown that she can be assertive?

I think previous episodes have shown that Fluttershy only ever stands up for her friends and never for herself.

I actually liked this episode since I found the gags hilarious and Flutterbitch is always fun to watch. More importantly though, I felt that this episode had an important lesson for any person; that of finding a good midpoint between being a doormat and being a bully. If Aristotle has taught me anything, it's that having an excess or deficiency of any virtue is never a good thing. Too much bravery is just recklessness while too little is cowardice. This time, the virtue in question is tolerance.

Seduction, I think, is a bit strong for what Rarity did since that implies that she was using the promise of sex to take advantage of the pony. What she was doing seemed to me to be closer to charming and persuading the colt to want to sell the asparagus to her. Assertiveness simply means standing up for your rights without trampling the rights of others. The colt, of course, always had the choice to refuse if he really needed it.

Pinkie Pie haggling with the shopkeeper and Iron Will was, of course, a reference to Bugs Bunny but at the same time, nothing she did ever really trampled any of their rights. It was also hilarious.

Flutterbitch telling both Pinkie and Rarity off was the most entertaining part of the episode for me especially because every single one of her points was valid and definitely struck home with the two.

So, in conclusion, this episode, like every other episode before it, has completely exceeded my expectations. Relevant and funny to boot.

"The wisest people are always smiling. This is because they've realized that life is one big joke, and they've figured out the punchline."

"When you've decided to do something, either do it with style, or don't do it at all."

"Every atom in our bodies was forged within the fiery heart of a dying star. We are all connected to each other and the universe."

"Before I was born, I was dead for billions of years and it hasn't inconvenienced me one bit."

She doesn't control the Stare. She doesnt have any idea when it'll happen. She can control how assertive she is though.

Happy minion of The Fabulous One!

Again, it wasn't so much Pinkie that was the problem.

I've never been a fan of that either. It didn't send a good message, as I've said, and even though she has done things similar to this before, this time it had more "flair" into it, if you will.

I think the Rarity scene was more offensive because the other pony was a complete stereotype of a nerd. They should at least have taken a "normal" pony, such bad stereotypes are bugging me(especially because when 99% of ponyville looks "normal" it seems odd for somepony to look this ugly)

I wrote etc, because there are many manipulation tactics, like nagging or guilting your parents for something etc.

And of course they weren't helping her,

they all had to learn a bit of a lesson, which is the entire point of the show.

I'm not saying what they did was right, it wasn't.

The blind leading the blind, so to speak.

I'm just saying, don't go pointing your finger when you are no innocent yourself.

So they have flaws? And they learn form them, like everyone.

The fact that Rarity gave the guy his money back shocked me,

not something MOST (if any) girls would do after seducing a guy for something.

Ahh gee this scene... When I first watched it my heart sank and my gut twisted inside of my stomach. It was a very hard scene to watch and it was definitely a very powerful scene.

Everyone here has made some very good points about each character in this episode and a lot of points have already been made in regards to what they were trying to accomplish by showing Fluttershy how to be "assertive" in the market. In my opinion though I don't think they could have done that scene any other way. The comedic value and the scenes that were portrayed during that segment of the episode were a crucial role in playing out how the rest of the episode was going to pan out.

I did really like this episode though and I have no problems with it! Just watching that scene though... Phew! Quite a work out to get over that scene afterwards! What a downer!
