Has Pinkie been flanderized?

I second what Deesinn said.

Just wait a good 9 hours or (if you're a poop like me) go watch the leaked episode.

If anything, I've grown to like her more this season, as she seems to do her antics in a more conscious, deliberately funny sense. Maybe it was always there and my increasing liking of Pinkie is letting me see that, but she's definitely moved up my list.

Same. She was fourth on my list through seasons one and two, as of half-way through S4, she's second only to Dashie.

Honestly, I was thinking the same thing after Rarity Takes Manehattan, but with Rarity instead. I know that isn't Pinkie related, but whatever. Yay for starting my post with a digression. Pinkie seems to be taking the form of Applejack's character in the first part of the show, where she didn't really have as many traits as other ponies. Pinkie just isn't as exciting anymore, as her party animal character is kinda getting a bit carried away, and the writers haven't incorporated quirks or anything new besides Pinkie Apple Pie. Who knows- maybe we'll be surprised with another Pinkamenia twist?

A character can't be flanderized in a single episode. They can be out of character, though I think Rarity was completely fine in that episode with the song just showing her at her best. She was full of the joy and excitement about being in Manehattan, and wanted to spread that joy and excitement through generous deeds. This is explained by the use of the lyrics "Oh, Manehattan! What'd you do to me?" and "If someone's grumpy pay no mind, respond instead with something kind!" respectively.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Pinkie Pie has been "flanderized", but I agree her characterization has been a bit...erratic. I believe Lauren Faust once stated that Pinkie was not necessarily random, she just marched to the beat of her own drum. Since Faust has left the show, her character has been a bit unstable.

I personally think that in episodes where the focus in on her, she is much stronger as a character. When she is just a supporting role, she can be a bit ridiculous. Her little quirks can be funny sometimes, but often she can just be annoying and out of character.

Oh wow. This thread is exactly the case with poor old Pinkie, and exactly the term I needed.
This latest episode, however, has successfully redeemed such, hopefully the writing staff will keep her more in mind later.

My thoughts exactly, Pinkie is unfortunately inconsistently, erraticly characterized, but I'd say it dates back to even Season 1 personally.

Just gonna leave this here :3

245: "Let's talk about Pinkie though for a minute, as I believe her character is a lot more open to interpretation than most. A lot of people have their own idea of what Pinkie's 'true character' is, and like to make claims on if she's 'in character' or not, on an episode to episode basis. I think the entire process of trying to do something like this is massively biased; which is okay, but really needs to be identified as such. The fact of the matter is that Pinkie has been all over the place since the very beginning, and trying to suss out a specific character for her, is almost an act of selective memory."

I've noticed with this season that in episodes with all the mane six Pinkie is mainly used for gags but in episodes starring her, she is in character. Maybe it's just that the writers don't know what to do with her or want something to break tension of a serious moment or something. Plus there are several new writers on the show so I wouldn't say she was flanderized more of written inconsistently now. I still love her and she's still my favorite pony though.

I obviously won't delve into Season 4 since it's not complete yet But so far? I agree. Pinkie has sort of become a loud and idiotic character who seems to be more about spontaneity and randomness than being a fun, good friend.

I agree with everything you just said, except this last thing.

I think that Pinkie is getting back on character like the Pinkie of season 1 and 2. She had few bad moments in some episodes like in Three's a Crowd were she fell again in her empty idiotic loop, but in the other epsides, especially the ones that have highlited her, she was pretty old Pinkie and it was awesome.

Season 4 is fixing the mess Pinkie was in season 3.

I'm going to assume you're excluding "Too Many Pinkie Pies" from that last statement.

actually I wasn't. :/

the Pinkie logic seen in Too Many Pinkie Pies, was very different from how I've seen Pinkie in other episodes, that ep was the beginning of her downfall.

I don't follow. Pinkie didn't want to disappoint RD or AJ so she made clones of herself in an attempt to spend time with both. The clones are differentiated from Pinkie, because they have lower intelligence, little to no consideration for others, and only want anything "fun." I'm sorry Spark, but I don't see it in that episode. If you said 'One Bad Apple' on the other hand...

I completely agree with this and retract my original statement about her; especially after seeing her latest debut in Pinkie Pride :D I'm very happy to say that I've seen the good ol' Pinkie back. I mean... Hell, that episode couldn't have been made any better. The transition she took from being depressed and ready to leave Ponyville to, "No, I need to stay here and take back what is mine!" was done SO well! It didn't feel rushed and it was so plausible. Brilliant episode :D Even better Pinkie <3

To me, too many Pinkie Pies was a genuine one of the worst episodes for me, regardless if Pinkie was an idiot or not. But, if we talk about Pinkie's behavior I think it came way too soon. You see, Pinkie Pride was like the confirmation episode that made me understand Pinkie Pie much better.

I don't know about other people, but I've learned through that episode is that despite Pinkie being happy all the time, she has serious problems. When she's unhappy, she recklessly takes her actions to the extreme. I saw that in Party of One, but Pinkie Pride was like that missing gear to the whole puzzle, then, looking back at Too many Pinkie Pies, it kind of makes sense. But my opinion was based off season 3 without season 4 because that was what I saw back then.

Pinkie in One Bad Apple was.... I can't even....

don't you think that Pinkie was still being prideful when she decided to leave Ponyville? but at the same time that contradicts what I said about Pinkie being a radical character that takes decision as quick as lighting without thinking the pros and cons of said desisions.

My brain hurts  :muffins:

I think 'Too Many Pinkie Pies' was just as necessary as 'Pinkie Pride' because it sets up a more mature Pinkie than 'Party of One' (as in she learned her lesson) while retaining the spontaneous decision-making and inability to communicate shown as an important part of her character in previous episodes. To me 'Party of One', 'Too Many Pinkie Pies', and 'Pinkie Pride' are the three big gears powering Pinkie's character beyond that of the silly, crazy member of the cast, and making her a truly special, fleshed-out, and respectable character.
