I have no idea... This might give one an idea, looks like there was a lot released. But, to be honest, I really don't know any of it (as far as original material goes) because the 80s really aren't my decade in music. So I've never even cared what was released because I don't really care for any of it. lol

My birth year, 1989, wasn't a terribly good year for popular music. To prove my point, the Billboard #1 album the week I was born was Girl You Know It's True by Milli Vanilli. (By the way, the #1 song on the Hot 100 that week was by Milli Vanilli also - "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You".)

Still, there were a few diamonds in the rough to be found in 1989. Looking at the Billboard Year-End Top Albums of 1989, here are a few that were probably at least decent. I don't usually listen to entire albums, but these albums at least had some good songs on them. (Also, some of these albums were originally released in 1988, but were popular on the album charts in 1989.)

Full Moon Fever - Tom Petty

Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 - Traveling Wilburys

The End Of The Innocence - Don Henley

Storm Front - Billy Joel

Greatest Hits - Fleetwood Mac

Watermark - Enya

Disintegration - The Cure

I'm also a 1989er. Hey, we had "Doolittle" by the Pixies and the Stone Roses' self-titled album. The former is awesome. The latter has some amazing songs but is a bit inconsistent.

The names of those groups sounded familiar, but I haven't heard any of their music, other than one song in Rock Band - "Wave Of Mutilation" by The Pixies. Out of curiosity, I looked them up in my chart database, and sure enough, both groups had pretty successful singles off the albums you mentioned on the Modern Rock charts.

In particular, "Monkey Gone To Heaven" peaked at #5 and "Here Comes Your Man" peaked at #3 off of Doolittle, while The Stone Roses had three charting singles: "She Bangs The Drums" peaked at #9, "I Wanna Be Adored" peaked at #18, and "Fools Gold" peaked at #5.

I don't know if you think those are good songs off of those albums, but I listened to the aforementioned singles, and overall, I actually thought they weren't bad. So you might indeed be justified in counting those albums among the good albums of 1989.
